I'm a straight guy and I love the Red Carpet. That said, I don't care to see a long interview with the fat ugly chick even if she is nominated, just give her a brief interview and move on to the hot chicks like Stacy Keibler, but no they linger on her and other people that looked far from fabulous.

J-Lo's gown made her look way too hippy. Otherwise it was a great gown.

Jolie's gown looked stupid with that vertical piece on one side.

Platrow had a great gown ruined by that stupid built in cape what the F was that?

Mind you, it's still a 100x more worthy winner than "Crash" was. That really was the nadir of the Best Picture category.[/QUOTE]

100% agree. Crash won on the anybody-but-Brokeback vote.

I definitely wasn't expecting to scroll down and see you reviewing gowns after the first sentence of your post. I agree with all of them.

'Crash' is what happens when people who spend most of their non-sleeping or non-snorting-coke-while-banging-model hours driving in their cars try to imagine what it's like to interact with non-whites. And of course the Academy voters thought it was the most profound shit ever because they share the same inexperience with, shit, non-Hollywood people in general.

It won Best Picture because it was the ultimate Hollywood film. Meanwhile, people who live in actual cities like, say, Dearborn, MI are like "LOL wut?"

The really sad part is that I guess it was a slow news night on ET but they made a huge thing out of Jolie's pose and her legs. Legs? Are they kidding me she has chicken legs. Two long sticks. Her kneecaps are boney too. Talk about being delusional.

    These are legs.

The Oscars are shit. I quit paying attention when Forest Gump beat out Pulp Fiction for best picture.

    F the academy.

That was hardly the first time they got it wrong.

Though the last decade or so it's gotten really comical.

That Phat Hat is right, it's an effect of being that far up their own ass.

Meh. The Oscars screw up a lot but they never get really comical and they are the best of the major award shows. You really have to see other awards like the Grammys to really see comical.

I put the BET Awards above the Grammy's.

    Seriously.

The Emmys are wayyyyy more accurate than the Oscars.

I disagree. They may be getting better at it amd finally giving non big 4 shows a chance but their record is worse to me than the oscars and because it's television and they last a lot more, they are worse at giving new awards to others.

What are you talking about? Look at the Emmy winners in the past 10 years and look at the winners of the Oscars.

The Emmys have Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Daily Show, Game of Thrones, Justified, Arrested Development, Mad Men, etc....

The Oscars have a bunch of shit except when they decided to finally give Sorsese an award for what's probably his 5th best film. And of course they give Meryl Streep an award even if she farts on screen.

The Emmy's are lucky because they can make up for things the next year or shuffle categories a lot of the time. Dramas in the comedy category kill me. There have been a lot of misses in recent years with the Emmys with shows and actors not being recognized, but there is so much out there that in the end it's hard to say they missed.

I was gonna say, the Emmys actually give awards for comedy, whereas the Oscars feel the need to give Best Picture to "important" films; when I get a chance, I'll pull up a chart showing how virtually no one watches dramatic films any more, but they account for almost all Best Picture nominations.

Also, television is simply a better product right now. Whereas film critics and audiences are always looking to the past, the best of television is in the present. Chances are, what you're watching today is a better program than the equivalent product from 10, even 5 years ago, and it's been that way since the Sopranos in drama and the Simpsons in comedy. There is so much good television out there that even if you miss, you're not really missing.

Oh, and the Academy is super political. You know the Hurt Locker sat on the shelf for a year because the producers knew that it was "Slumdog's year", right?

Anyway, I find it strange that people tune into and invest themselves in an industry backslapping event and get upset because an insular industry hands out awards in a way that reveals the industry to be insular and out of step with the public.

Like I said before, the red carpet, not the auditorium, is the main stage.

    I demand proof!

I tune in for the hopes of some entertainment. Unfortunately for me (and people that enjoy comedy) I don't know when they'll ever have Rock host again. Franco & Hathaway was an intriguing idea that just wasn't going to work if you actually thought about it. This year I knew Billy would suck from the moment they announced him.

And I do always hope that the industry will surprise me with some winners even though I know deep down it won't be the case.

Not exactly how I remembered it, but I think my point stands - dramas are overrepresented in the Oscars.

Other industries give awards to stuff people consume. The film industry gives awards to films that were created specifically to win awards.
This, I totally get. I think it's totally reasonable to demand a good spectacle.

Basically this. Also budgets for TV shows have grown. You have shows like Game of Thrones that have a budget of 5m per episode. That's 50m for the the first season. But still less than the budget of films in that genre and with that scope.

Fat hat is right, basically it's follow the money. Comedy, comedy drama, comedy action. Movies are directed at the ones spending the money going to the movies, or the parents giving the money to the kids to go to the movies.

The cum in the hair, kick in the nuts, pie in the face, car crash, movies are always going to outgross talking heads and thinking movies in the long run. How many of the younger set will sit though "Silent Movie?"

The acadamy won't pick them they'll go for the drama with a little more sophistication.

Wasn't Merryl Streep oscar this year the first since Sophie's Choice? My brother wasn't even born when Sophie's Choice came out.

And like I said, this has been the case recently but they still can't change that they used to be terrible at giving awards prior to that. They gave out awards to shows that are as bad as many of the worst oscar decisions. I mean Everybody Loves Raymond, Will and Grace, Ally Mcbeal? And they keep going on with their decision to honor the same program over and over again. Larry Sanders Show, Mr. Show (this one is a crime), The Simpsons and it's golden age, all those classic shows ended not getting one so that Frasier could get their annual emmy. They keep doing that since the Daily Show has won like 8 straight grammys when The Colbert Report surpassed it in quality a while ago. They also keep making as bad decisions as you attack the Oscars of. Steve Carrell never got one for him being the key to the Office and the year he goes out they decide to give it to Jim Parson and they also gave it to him last time. That one is a bad bad decision as bad as anything the oscars do. I'll stand by my argument.

If the Oscars give out awards to Comedy, they would just screw it up. If the Emmys can't do it well consistently, I doubt they will either. As a comedy fan, I rather they don't instead of screwing it up.

As for Television being better product, I agree with you totally. At least in comedy since I don't watch television dramas so I can't talk about that.
