Greetings. I'm looking for a good place to join fellow Timbers fans and watch Italy-USA next Wednesday 2/29 @11:30 PST.

Both Thirsty Lion locations are advertising it. Apparently Zizzo is joining the crowd downtown, but I don't really care about that unless he's buying a round -- I want to watch the game and drink beer!

I am a lot closer to the one off Greenburg on Washington Square Road, so may take the easy route. Plus, they have always put a soccer game on whenever I requested it, so I like to give them my business. However, I am open to any spot with fellow fans and beer. Hope to see some of you for "lunch" next Wednesday!

I'll be watching it at home from the DVR after work, but I'd recommend 4-4-2 Soccer Bar. (Frankly, I'd recommend just about any bar--even one without a TV--over Thirsty Lion.)

4-4-2 is a great place and I would highly recommend it. You have to consider getting there early sometimes as there is not a lot of seating. It is sometimes standing room only, and packed to the gills.

I would say that Bitter End usually has a soccer fans in it for a game, but not always, and I'm assuming they don't open until noon or even later.

I really enjoy the Marathon actually. It is the king of super-divey sports bars, and somehow that is awesome.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Curious; why the dig at Thirsty Lion? Great beer selection, food and I've always gotten good service, including willingness to show soccer on request (if it isn't already on). The help looks good too. :)

The owners claimed to be (and marketed themselves as) "the official pub of the TA" without asking our permission. Also stiffed some local rec teams on promised sponsorship $$. Most of the fans that were around in the USL days won't step foot in that place. Heard from some of the newer fans that they'll advertise soccer, then put the games on mute, or bump viewings so a 17th screen can show an FCS game no one cares about, or some other general DB tactic.

I've been a fan and season ticket holder since moving here in 2008, but not with the TA, so that's all news to me. Pretty lame in any case, and I'll have to keep it in mind going forward.

I didn't know any of that stuff about the Thirsty Lion. I thought it was a nice place when I first got to town, but soon realized that there are better places with cheaper beer, which is, of course, a very important consideration.

Also...during the last Euro Cup that place and Kells were jammed solid for all the big games - lines outside, the whole deal. Too much of a zoo. So I found other places to go where there was enough interest to maintain the excitement, but not such a huge crowd that you couldn't retain your sanity.

One more thing - a good soccer bar opens early, if necessary, for important games. Marathon has kind of pissed me off on occasion for not paying enough attention to soccer on a regular basis, but what a great place it was for the World Cup.

I would suggest avoiding the Thirsty Lion.

That clinches it; the person that answered the phone at Thirsty Lion (near Washington Square) said they will not have audio for the game, just music. Heading to 4-4-2.

4-4-2 was great. I'll be back. Thanks for the tip.
