Damn that is a horrible trade. Montreal has a very smart front office.

I think we overpaid but our FO is good at picking players so I'll wait and see. Fucito i think was worth letting go from a purely soccer standpoint. Neagle I think should have been playing up top. We never gave him a shot there but his success in Charleston was mostly as a forward wasn't it? I think an Estrada/Seamon/Draftee would have been a more reasonable pairing with Fucito but i'm not in charge. I just hope he does well and i'm still sounders till i die.

Eddie Johnson's salary is irrelevant. Giving up a guy like Neagle is a cost that will be felt a couple years down the line when the Sounders are trying to build a new core. Maybe this works great, the Sounders get a big trophy and hurray! But they still need to be developing the next itteration of the team while trying to get that trophy.

If only we could be replacing young players with some players that we develop ourselves. Something like an Academy perhaps? :D

Neagle would have been starter quality for the team by next year -- and likeky this year for the Impact. How soon until the Sounders are going to be rebuilding the starting core out of academy players?

Meh. He might be a starter with Montreal, but he's not starter quality and I'm not sure he will be. Particularly in this 3 DP world MLS is in right now. He'll score goals, but he's best used as a super-sub that rips apart tired opponents.

Yes...... but did you watch him with Aris???

He has good touch and go ability. He can pass, he can do 1-2's....The man when surrounded by good touch and go soccer players... can hold his own.

The fact is, he never was a good fit for the english style.

    False.

I thought that too before, but after watching him play at Aris... the guy knows what he is doing with his touch and passing... it's about confidence with him.

I'm not convinced Neagle would beat out Carrasco for a spot. With Mauro, Alonso, Sivbaek, Fernandez and Evans that makes Neagle a bench player at best.

The risk to reward in this trade is actually quite good. If EJ turns out to be a flop, we aren't set back by that much.

I'm actually happy for Neagle because he'll get a chance to continue to improve, whereas here there isn't even a guarantee that he'd make the bench on game days.

That's not the point-- the point is MLS defenses are eye-gougingly, throat-slittingly horrible... Just hacking worthless, awful, wastes... oftentimes resembling regurgitated shit more than human beings.

How many NT caps do George John, Omar Gonzalez and Jamison Olave have combined? Let's toss in Chad Marshall's powder-puff Gold Cup. Or Tim Ream's buck-toothed trounces. Hell, we're talking Sounders, throw in JKH and Jeff Parke (lol).

Sounders led the league in scoring with zero strikers last year (admit it, Montero is a #10). That's how horrifyingly awful MLS defenses are. Surely EJ cannot possibly be worse. Chris Henderson says so, and he's been tracking him for a year.

We'll just keep throwing different darts at the same bullseye... Jaqua, Nkufo, OBW, Ochoa, Soldade, EJ... eventually we'll hit it.

I get the feeling that whatever promise Ochoa has as a target striker (which is pretty significant, IMO)... if you have aspirations to win MLS Cup, and you line up Ochoa for first kick, with Levesque as his back-up, you have given up on winning MLS Cup.

I understand that this may be percieved as naive but...

I have no reason to doubt the front office and their decision making process - not with the success we've had for the 3 years we've been in the league and the open desire to be better each year. They're obviously the ones in the know right now, we were not in Arizona or in Florida with them.

I'm going to trust them with this one, I think they've earned that.

People who didn't actually watch EJ play and are just scoffing at his "numbers" need to stop contributing to this conversation.

That being said, he needs to do well or he will get a lot of flack from many fans.

Like many I was initially taken aback by this trade, but now I'm coming around.

A lot of the criticism seems to focus on getting EJ for two young players. I think that overstates things. By the end of May Neagle, Fucito, and EJ will be 25, 26, and 28 respectively. Not a huge factor in my opinion. Neither Neagle nor Fucito are that young.

EJ clearly had an up and down MLS career. But I would say that his most relevant experience is his most recent experience. And that was 15 goals and 6 assists in 2007. That kind of production would make the acquisition a huge success, baring some kind of massive and shocking transformation by Fucito and Neagle in Montreal. EJ's production from 2007 in 2012 would be considered a success from a high-priced DP striker, much less a guy making 100K.

Of course he's had bad years, and the EJ of the bad years could be the one to show up for the Sounders. But filling that forward spot was always going to carry risk. Why not risk it on someone who has a proven record of contributing the exact production in MLS that the Sounders want - and at a discounted salary to boot?

Bottom line, the criticism of EJ here would be valid coming from Fulham fans expecting a Premiership striker. It doesn't stand up so well to me coming from people looking for a double digit goal scorer in MLS.

One thing i find ridiculous is calling for Adrian's job if this ends up being a bad trade.

Its not like seattle could have easily an international striker that can finish. We do not have the caps space for another 350k size contract. So the only really choice was to trade. And since we were so low in allocation order it was unlikely EJ would have dropped to us. Upgrade by trade will cost us talent.
