Managed to watch the first ep tonight. I'm not sold on the new Spartacus. So many new faces too. Other than that thr violence and visuals are the same. The beginning scene looked like they took a page out of 300.
For one thing, Andy had a much better physique. The new guy is not cut the way Andy was. Makes him look a bit soft. Also, Andy had a simmer and inner burning to him that this actor was not able to express. I did not recognize Lucy Lawless at first. The main cast looks unchanged.
well, as long as they keep showing Viva Bianca naked, I'll keep watching! The new Spartacus will take some getting use to. Just does not seem as intense as the old guy. Maybe Crixus and Gannicus can carry the show this year. Gannicus was a likeable character from last season
I hope they move into some historical accuracy (I know, I know) Spartacus went on for several years before Crassus walled him on the toe of the boot (S was cheated by Sicialian pirates after paying for a crossing) They can do all the in-stories they want to fill in the characters without leaving the historical narrative of where/when/who. We would get to see both Crassus and Caesar in his role as Pintifex Maximus. I doubt very much the producers wouldnt be thrilled to portray Crassus decimating two legions. I suppose well know soon enough as the real S went up the side of Vesuvius right after fleeing Capua.
Caesar wasn't yet Pontifex Maximus, he would be elected after Crassus' consulship. It's also not at all clear he was with Crassus as a legate. That being said, I'm sure we will see Caesar for some name recognition!
I think your right. He was there as an Auger perhaps? It was in this time that he became go-between for Crassus and Pompey (who was racing home from Spain to get in of the Servile War) and set the stage for the later First Triumvirate.
He was at one point Flamen Dialis (priest of Jupiter) after Merula's death, but he hadn't held that office for a long time. Also, the first triumvirate would take almost 10 more years to form. I think you may be taking your historical reminiscences from McCullough It is known he was politically allied with Crassus around this time - Crassus stood as guarantor for his debts when he left about 5 years later to take up his governorship in Spain.
Dude it's only one episode. The original four episodes of Blood and Sand were slow and it took time to become the series it was.
I dunno... It was: a) The new dude. I didn't think the original was such a genius actor, but there was nothing very compelling about the new guy. Someone mentioned his lack of buff-ness above, and I think that actually may play into it. I always thought Crixus was way too manicured and cut, in a Gold's Gym wanker sort of way. But I realized that I at least believe him in a fight scene way more than the new guy. Doctore as well, obviously. But more than that, I just wasn't compelled by the story or the character. There was not the same gravitas of the earlier seasons. b) Psycho Zombie Xena That's just a huge reach, plot-wise. Basically Bobby Ewing taking a shower. c) No Batiatus John Hannah held up that show like a Colossus. None of the actors left get even close to him. And without him, I realized my attention just wandered off and never came back.
I can't remember how Ashur escaped last seasons finale? So was it him that nursed Lucretia back to health?
He hid from Doctore under a couple of bodies. I didn't think about that last part, but it would make sense if that were the case.
Well, according to the history, no, but the way the episode showed the last scene, I don't know what to think. It looked like he was stabbed in the back....literally.
He was thumped in the head with the handle of the sword. I'm sure he'll wake up as a captive... but a captive of Glaber or simply of Ashur...?
Could be, but lets remember other things from the series. 1.) Anything that happened to Crixus and Theokoles during that fight (well, apart from Theokoles getting decapitated) 2.) Lucricia survived being run through as well. I don't believe anyone in this series is dead until we have seen their throat cut open or their head removed.
