If I give money under false pretenses, I consider it theft. It is the dishonesty that I abhor. Although I'm sure that I could have had a good time in Argentina too, that is if I wanted to ignore that women and children were being killed by the military dictatorship. Hey, PR firms like Burson Marsteller actually profited from all that death, so maybe it was not so bad.

Meh, you can think whatever you want.. Your posts are not exactly sparking with brilliance either, you know.

The "dumbasses" line aside, Timon19 made some good points (based on a real knowledge of the region).

I think we can all agree that the way it went down was disgraceful. Question is, where do we go from here?

How in the world is it "under false pretenses" if you already know about it and disapprove of it (whatever "it" is)? Are you actually familiar with the English language, or did you just find a nice cliche that you wanted to try out for a spin?

    How so, Smokey?

Really? By saying that the rules are one way, will change for the World Cup, and then conveniently change back afterwards? I thought the fact that I dropped about Burson Marsteller taking 2.5 million to make a murderous regime look good to the outside world was an excellent display of how people will do and say anything for money, was a much better point.

I'll have you know despite English being my third language and despite your ignorant and racist trolling, I will answer your question.

What they are doing is disingenuous. They are saying. "Hey look at us! Love us! This is who we are!", when in fact its nothing more then a lie to make that part off the world seem more favorable. Anyhow since when did they start awarding the World Cup to teams that have never qualified but are rich? If that were the case we would have never has Chile '62 and Brazil would not be as revered as it is.

It happens all the time over there.

That would be Bahrain, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Egypt, Saudi. Really haven't heard that about Qatar. Backward, yes. Immoral, yes. Murderous? Hyperbole.

Racist! Awesome. You don't get a free pass because you choose NOW to reveal that you're not a native-speaker, since you seem to have a decent command of the basics and much more. You mis-used "false pretenses" and "stealing", so as to make them meaningless. Deal with it.

You'll have to show me where I contended otherwise. That doesn't make you able to claim that they're "stealing" your money that you gave them with the full knowledge of what you just said, or that they took it under "false pretenses" when you willingly gave money to them despite admonishing them on things you find abhorrent.

1994, in effect, followed by 2002.

You seem to be implying that I support Qatar 2022. If so, you are full of fail.

How many languages do you speak, b/c I was talking about Argentina.

Who the hell cares? Your argument is so inane that you are clinging to grammatical errors to prove you are right? For all the ignorant Americans out there that don't know a thing about international politics that might go to Qatar and think that is how the country always is, they are being sold on a lie. Thus my mention of false pretenses.

True, it's not the fault of the Qatari people that the American schooling system is so far behind and that the average American cares more about what Lindsey Lohan is doing rather then what is happening in the Middle East.. but they should not use that ignorance to sell a false image to the world. They should keep things the way they really are and say, "This is us. Love us or hate us, but this is who we really are."

Not sure it's relevant, but aside from English, German is my best, which isn't saying much. You injected Argentina, apropos of very little. The subject at hand is Qatar.

Diction, actually, not grammar. And what, precisely, is inane about my arguments?

More than likely the Americans that WILL go are going to have some clue. The ones that won't are the ones that wouldn't have gone anyway, because they believe the caricature that is so often presented about the place: that it's full of bloodthirsty Ay-rabs looking to blow them up some 'Muricans.

Perhaps they actually want to liberalize. It's possible!!

I brought that up to show how in the past, people have used the media attention the WC brings them to give a disingenuous portrayal of the country. Obviously, Argentina is one extreme, but did you hear about all the race related murders that happened in South Africa prior to the World Cup? I did not think so..

    Qatar will be no different.

I hear they have better hashish in Qatar.

USA played in the first world cup and Korea played as early as 1954.

Your acting like a diction..

I read Archer's columns. I seem to recall hearing about those, yes.

    Maybe, maybe not.

That's not my bag. I'll take your word for it.

The USA also hadn't qualified for 44 years and were giving almost no signs of ever being able to do it again until the miracle in Port-of-Spain - and that was with the help of the ban on Mexico.

As for the Koreans, they were obliterated in 1954 and a bit less so in 1986; got smoked in 1990; they only began to suck less in 1994, but by that time they were qualifying from a pretty easy situation; then they hemorrhaged goals in 1998; they didn't win a game until they hosted. That was it, and they were qualifying in a similarly easy (relatively speaking) confederation as the US. They were awarded 2002 based on almost no real pedigree, just like the US was in '94.

Leaving ALL that aside, I don't recall ever claiming Qatar was a good idea, especially on sporting grounds. They're a terrible side even with mercenaries from Africa.
    Why, thank you.

Yeah, because the last thing FIFA would want would be a repeat of the best-attended WC ever, in one of the biggest and most lucrative growth markets for the sport anywhere.

Well, this has all made interesting reading! (And a Merry belated Christmas to all!)

Could Qatar host the World Cup? Yes. They have the money to get things done. And given the type of leadership, then rules governing the division of men and women, alcohol, etc can be waived for a few weeks.

But then, they may not. And just beat up all the fans who break the rules.

Should they? No. Qatar can build all these stadia, but to fulfill all their promises (space age stadia, etc) it is going to cost. And even Qatar's famed finances will be put under severe strain!

Of course, to make life easier for Qatar (a WC final not in July, for example) sets FIFA on a collision course with UEFA and the European Leagues. A fight that will get very, very messy. Also, alterations to calendars will have to be done slowly to avoid no massive ructions, and negotiations will have to start now.

The big one for me is that the bid team declared that Qatar is mad-keen on football.

    Erm...

    No.

I am an English ex-pat in Japan, so got to see loads of games from the summers Asian Championship. The only game to sell out was the final. Qatar did not even manage to sell out the opening game! And their national stadium is 37,000! The crowd was 35,000. Even then, it was "assisted" by a large block of what looked like European/white ex-pats.

Indeed, in the Japan v Saudi Arabia game, the crowd was 2,000. Of which half where from Japan, about 600 from Saudi Arabia, and a tiny smattering of locals.

I know the World Cup is a bigger deal, but still, the Asian Cup is the largest competition Qatar has ever hosted, you would have though more people would have turn out for it! Especially for the Qatari national team! Who did not once play in front of a sell out. I dont car what numbers they put out, but there where lots of open spaces in the crowd for the games involving Qatar.

Qatar has 10 years to get people interested. By effectively double, since Qatar will end up playing in the main stadium, which if I remember right, has to have enough seating for 80,000!

It could be a long WC in front of empty seats...

They didn't sell out the final either. Or even come near.

Instead they bused in thousands of migrant workers to fill the stadium, leaving many fans (included those who had travelled around the world to be there) locked out.

It was OK though, as the Qatari organsiers gave them full refunds (about $10) as compensation.

Not really the point, though, is it. You travel halfway round the world to watch a big game, only to get locked out.

But its ok, we'll give you your ticket money back.

Never mind ripping out the very heart of your journey.

And for many games, the biggest group WAS the westerners! Though many did look a little bemused whilst waving a flag looking slightly confused...

    Didnt miss it.

But do know someone from the Philippines who saved up, and went, and got locked out. My friends brother.

He apparently had a nice time, but said it all felt a little hollow...

They are lucky to get 10 dollars back! The tickets are usually given out for free, in my experiences. I lived in Qatar for two years, and every year or so they would host a tennis tournament and attract some pretty big names, but in order to fill seats they gave tickets out literally for free. I don't know if that was the case for the Asian Cup, but I'd bet it was.
