I disagree. Schilawski will be taken by Montreal in the expansion draft. He'll be traded, or released, and signed by Colorado as a backup striker. Then, due to injuries, he'll become a starter and finish the season with 10 goals. Giving Revs fans another reason to drink.
There's no way he'd ever see the field behind Casey, Cummings, Folan, and Akpan; but, I think I know what you're getting at...
Lol, I think Schilawski is honestly that bad. I haven't been impressed by anything I've seen from him this year. I give him one more year on the team, if he doesn't get picked up in the expansion draft.
I would take Schilawski over Akpan, but that's not so much an endorsement of Zack as a condemnation of Andre. Anyway, I don't think he'll get picked in the expansion draft. We didn't lose anyone last time around and this year there will be only one team picking and two more teams from which to pick.
He's young and cheap, which makes him pretty attractive for an expansion team. Schil was protected last year, but I can't imagine we'd protect him this time around. I wouldn't be surprised if he were picked, although McCarthy would be another option if he were to be left unprotected.
Schilawski has been utterly unimpressive in his time on the field. Perhaps he has something we haven't seen from him yet, but he isnt/going to get the playing time to show it. Leave him unprotected, let someone else take him and go after a more experienced player. (NO FROGGY RETIREMENT HOME CANDIDATES)
There will be a lot of young and cheap players available, though, especially on deeper teams than the Revs. Expansion drafts are unpredictable because they are often about who other teams want (to be flipped in trades, etc), but I think there will be myriad alternatives to Schil. Also, I think it's a bit odd that you think Schilawski is a crap player who can't even help a crap team like the Revs and is even worse than Andre Akpan, but somehow other teams will want him.
He scored a hattrick last year which gained him a little PR around the league and finished the year with six goals in total. Six goals looks like decent production from a rookie who wasn't even a consistent starter. I'm guessing that his reputation might be a little higher with other teams who haven't seen him play as much, whereas I've watched him for two years and have come to the conclusion that he sucks.
You are operating under the assumption that other MLS teams do as little homework on a player as the Revs do. [/cheapshot]
He actually had 5 goals in league play last year and only one so far this year. In 2,288 minutes ... so basically take away the hattrick and he has 3 goals in the remaining almost 2,200 minutes, a goal every 8 games.
I'm not defending the guy, I think he's awful. I'm just saying that five goal isn't bad for a rookie and that another team could be mislead by his stats.
Awful? Sucks? Crap? I know this board doesn't go for shades of gray much, but I think this view of Schilawski is over the top. Most of the minutes he's played have been with teammates who couldn't string 3 passes together. How much has he played with Milton, not to mention with mids who could get him the ball? The kid's only 24, he has vastly better foot and heading skills than Lekic, and is tougher and faster than Lekic, and works harder. Schilawski: 6 goals in the run of play in 2288 minutes (per Monty) = 1 goal/381 minutes. Lekic 4 goals in the run of play in 1712 minutes = 1 goal/428 minutes with better teammates. I think giving Schilawski up for a bag of Doritos would be a huge error.
Well put Jon. I'd at least hope we can at least negotiate some some cheese dip. Agree with you re: Schil vs Lekic when the numbers beat it out. However, Schil's numbers are distorted by his hat trick. Taking away that aberration against a godawful TFC, Lekic is better.
It's still apples and oranges - You could just as easily say if Schilawski had the chance to play with Caraglio, Zerka, Feilhaber, Joseph and Tierney every week, he would be scoring more goals.
Well it's academic since coach's decision has given Lekic that opportunity but after watching Schil last season, I really have my doubts he's going to turn into much more than what he was as a rookie for the Revs. He's not happy here, it's obvious, so a change of scenery may do wonders for his game.
Of course he's not happy here, he thought the Crew drafted him! And I'll agree with your premise, he's not shown much here at all. I know there was a lot of talk about this last year but I believe almost every one of his goals last year were just sitter's ... the work had been done by someone else and all he had to do in most of those cases was touch the ball in. Yes, he fully gets credit for finding the net, I'm not taking that away, because we've seen how hard it has been for this team to actually find the damn net.
Agreed. I do remember some missed sitters by Schil that drove me absolutely crazy (on a team with Dube's knack for that). One that comes to mind was an in-close header he missed from less than 6 yds @Philly last year. He puts that away and maybe we walk out of there with 3 points instead of a 1-1 draw. Missed sitters add up over time and cost us in points and confidence. To me, poaching goals is sort of instinctual, you either have it or you don't. Twellman showed he had it as a rookie and it projected out as a great career. While I never expected Schil to be Taylor, I certainly expected more than he has been able to provide to-date. Then again, 10 goals his last year at Wake wasn't an exactly overwhelming number either.
HA! I'm more than willing to write him off after watching him play professional soccer for more than two consecutive years. I think I've seen enough to determine that he's not worth our time, although he could improve in a different environement. It is worth noting that he hasn't gotten much run with our new and improved team, albeit deservingly so. I'd like to see him paired up top with Caraglio to better judge his potential. Playing up top with Dube, Mansally, etc. last year was a death wish.
