Per Ives: "Lots of U.S. Youth national team players on the move for trials. I've been told Alejandro Guido is on his way to Netherlands for a trial." https://twitter.com/#!/SoccerByIves/status/96299358445776896
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Fantastic is all I can say. I love what MLS academies and teams are doing but I am more than happy to let our elite prospects develop overseas.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Very good news, though I don't rate him that highly. Hope he hooks on though and proves me wrong!
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands how highly don't you rate him? Like Messi High or Gaven high? Or SUPERhigh?
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands I think that his speed of play is significantly lower than it needs to be for the professional level. He plays quite casually and although it creates an aura of "calmness" on the ball, I have seen him do it in situations where he had no immediate pressure, so he waited to play the ball to a teammate who was quickly put under pressure when he could have played it with more urgency which in turn would have given his teammate time to make the correct decision after playing the ball, instead of conceding possession when quickly put under pressure. Just an opinion, but that would be my main gripe while assessing him in the handful of games I've seen him play. Again, I'd love to be proven wrong, but it is my opinion. I still think he's a good player.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Historically, this would seem to be something of a big deal if it happens. The only U.S.-based YNT player to sign his first pro contract in the Netherlands in recent memory was Lee Nguyen; Ajax looked at Davies and Villanueva, but signed neither, and Beasley had already been in MLS for years.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands That is correct, totally whiffed on that one. Still, it's pretty uncommon.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Gregg Berhalter asks "am I so old that starting my career in Holland no longer counts as recent?"
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands This x1000 USMNT fans are so desperate for someone "comfortable" on the ball that they'll overlook bad qualities. Guido is slow, looks lazy, doesn't seriously attempt to play any defense. People look at him and say he's a great "number 10" type player. But those people need to read this
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands I'd argue yes. That was pre-MLS... Of course, I'm only a few years younger than Gregg, which makes me old as well. And Wiki says O'Brien went over in '94, and went pro in '98 -- so I guess he makes the post-MLS cut. In any case: No more than a handful of players since MLS started -- or, arguably, since the "modern era" really began around 1990. Yes, I have heard of Charles Kazlauskas, who I'm pretty sure was not a YNT pool player when he went over. I think Magee is another one Ajax passed on. (And maybe Feilhaber?) In any case, the point is that while I think a lot of people believe "it would be awesome if more of our young players went to the Netherlands," over in the Netherlands they don't seem real interested.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Eh, I would avoid any declarative statements. So, has he actually landed the Netherlands, yet? I'm a bit surprised we have not heard anything about the club he is trialing at.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands I love what Guido can do on the ball but he is going to struggle with his limited athletic abilities at the professional levels. He now has to play vs older players and not age restricted. We have to realize there is a minimum physical standard for professional soccer and I'm afraid he may not meet those physical skills. We'll see though.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands I think Dempsey and boca had trials in holland as mls players and came back empty handed. Feyenoord maybe.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands This is basically what I was getting at...paired with his lack of quick decision making. It is almost like he is capable of playing the ball quicker, but chooses not to, in lieu of being more stylistic and trying to dictate a slower pace to the game. Maybe someone will take a flyer on him thinking they can develop him physically.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands 1 - Magee was not Ajax. I can't recall who it was, but not Ajax. The one that was so interested in Feilhaber back in 2005 was Heerenveen. 2 - The main stumbling block is the minimum non-EU salary.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Rogers turned his tail and scampered back to the US pretty quickly; forgetting about his stint at Heerenveen is sadly understandable. A young American winger voluntarily punting an opportunity in the Eredivisie was tragic.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands According to him it was: "I went to Ajax, where I had a tryout lined up. I was very excited because Ajax is such a big club, and they have such a great history. I don’t exactly understand it, but because of my age I couldn’t sign a pro contract there. I think I needed to be 18 years old to sign, so after that I returned home."http://www.ussoccer.com/News/U-20-MNT/2002/08/On-The-Field-By-Mike-Magee.aspx
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Alejandro Guido is on trial at Vitesse Arnhem, I was waiting for someone to start a thread because I couldn't find anything on him online. Here's why http://www.voetbalcentraal.nl/nieuws/65691/vitesse-haalt-opnieuw-georgir-en-test-een-amerikaan Dutch media thought his name was Alejandro Biedo. About the ongoing discussion, does Michael Bradley count?
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands I would say no, because Bradley was already a pro when he moved to the Netherlands. Wasn't Jack McInerney on trial with Arnhem before he signed with MLS? Thanks for the Vitesse news.
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Yes McInerney trialed with them before going to the Union
Re: Alejandro Guido on trial in the Netherlands Vitesse fan sites are reporting him as Alejandro Biedo as well. http://www.vitesse.org/nieuws/vites...media/kazaishvili_op_tribune_bij_vitesse.html
