Could some of our German friends post news, editorial pieces and/or message board threads for us Yanks on how this hiring is being received in Germany?

Apologies if theres some buried in threads already but if we could have one thread to capture all of them I think that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    German article from der Spiegel

    auf Deutsch

    in English

"Klinsmann takes over U.S. team: Reformer and savior" (Ed: given this is the country that invented Protestantism, I guess we can forgive the hyperbole)

Perhaps the most interesting part: "Freiheiten zugesichert" = Freedom guaranteed. And Wynalda says U.S. soccer has relinquished control

of course we have yet to hear from bltleo :D

I don't live in Germany, but from what I know (and have read), the German media knows very well of Klinsmann's flirtation with US soccer. They also were pretty quick to call Bradley "innept," citing poor tactical knowledge/implementation.

Most importantly, there seems to be an opinion in Germany that Americans will expect instant results over the next few years, while Klinsmann is more of a "long term" guy.

    here some article from Spiegel:

    German:
    http://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/0,1518,777468,00.html

in generally they say that the biggest task for klinsi will be to modernize the old-fashioned structure in US soccer and invest a lot into youth soccer...one of his important man couldl be former Leverkusen player Claudio Reyna

i would say .wait and see...what happens..

    Ps.
i wish good luck Klinsi, i m big big fan of Klinsi..it should make me even more fan of Usa
so good luck my Klisi..you will make it.

Re: Jurgen's hiring, the German reaction

This article talks about him being given "complete control." What exactly does that mean, though? I doubt it means to us what this Spiegel writer thinks it means. And I wonder how much of that maxim is the writer's own speculation plus the speculation of Wynalda. I've yet to hear a word of just how much scope of control Klinsmann will have above what Bob and Bruce before him had.

[Note to Wahl, Ives, Goff, etc.: It's a pretty obvious one, yes, but that really ought to be--HAS to be--your very first question tomorrow at the USSF/Klinsmann press conference. Pretty, pretty please!]

I still say that, provided that he qualifies us for 2014 and we don't suffer a total Sven-like Mexican meltdown, this hire can be a success even without us having the comparative competitive success that the 2010 cycle was. IF Jürgen indeed turns out to be a voice that USSF and those interests it represents at least gives an ear to. Jürgen is hardly the first guy to point out what he'd pointed out in the whole "upside down pyramid" talk on ESPN, BUT... he might be the first that those who are part of the problem might actually give some credibility to and at least half-heartedly listen.

I've talked a lot about our need to reform and build up soccer culture, and while that's out of the purview of the national team manager, having a guy like him around in a visible role could help in that regard.

His very first nitty-gritty move, the hiring of Martin Vasquez, doesn't look so hot.

    latest news from bild
    Usa put Klinsi under pressure:

    http://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/j...ationaltrainer-unter-druck-19149732.bild.html

they write that USA has high expectations..some of US reporters asked themself if Klinsi is right for the job...considering his achievement in world cup in 2006 in germany and as Bayern coach....

personally I think that he is right for the job...however, i think if he do not deliver the results that are expected from him, americans would be mad and write some negative reports in the press...americans have high expectations on him...this is only one problem.klinsi needs some time to make a changes in the US soccer..i hope he will get his time..if yes, he will be successful..

Is it for sure that Vasquez has taken a position with the National Team?

Re: Jurgen's hiring, the German reaction

There was a link that I followed somewhere yesterday, one of the threads on this page. There was no mention of exactly in what capacity Vasquez will serve, though. He was the first announced hire, and he was his #2 at Bayern, so that got a lot of us presuming that he's Jürgen's #2 again. That's merely a presumption, though.

It was a Goal.com report, whilst elsewhere someone said that Schmid would be brought in for camps/games when Seattle is not busy.

I searched goal.com and all I could find was an article from 2010 when people were specualting back then that JK would be the new coach. Maybe I missed the article from Jul 2011?

Two and a Half years must be a long time in Germany, then. That's his longest tenure.

I doubt the Spiegel writer is an expert on Klinsmann and USSF. I've never heard of him.

Re: Jurgen's hiring, the German reaction

If Klinsmann has complete control over the national team programs, then Vazquez would be a rather nice hire for the U-20s head coach. Not as sure if its a good fit for top assistant for the senior team, but he's at least equal to Sorber.

Re: Jurgen's hiring, the German reaction

Agree very much with your assertion Marko that we need to build up our soccer culture.

And if that is a key objective, then who better to do it than the national team manager? No one else has quite the platform. Not the players. Not Gulati. Not Garber. In Klinsmann we have an attack-minded (exciting), World Cup winning (credible), charismatic (media attention), manager of our national team. Building culture won't be his #1 priority for sure, but it will happen, and there's no reason it shouldn't be on his radar as a job objective.

Clearly you don't remember Klinsmann's dark past as a troll on rec.sport.soccer ...

I understand there was a German contingent at the press conference today so hopefully there will be some more stories coming out of Germany in due time.
