Not sure if this topics been done (I'm guessing it has but I haven't seen it) but I find myself ranging from being not very interested to completely indifferent on the USA in the Women's World Cup.

From talking to folks, and reading around the internet, it seems like I'm in the minority amongst the US soccer cognoscenti.

I get its the national team and all that, and sure it would be nice for them to win the thing, but on the other hand I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if they had lost to Brazil or to France today or in the Final.

Not trying to turn this invite sexist comments or to turn this into a bashing thread or anything of that nature, just curious on people's thoughts?

Up until this World Cup I was one of those "lol women's sawker" kind of guys and always talked about how any decent U-17 male club team could beat them..

Then I got older and realized it isn't about that at all, now I appreciate it, and this tournament has been sublime.

I appreciate it somewhat, I just think that if I don't care if they lose, then its a bit much for me to get excited when they win.

Interest in the women's team is indirectly proportional with the success of the men's team. In all, I don't care if we lose, particularly, but its kind of like watching a golf tournament...if I start watching in the final round, i don't give a shit, if I watch from the first round, I start learning story lines and creating attachments.

That's sort of what has happened with me this tournament. I've been watching since the opening match, and not just the U.S. team. Also I figured I was being an immature, chauvinist douche by discounting the women's game, and that perhaps I had something to learn about it. Its kind of nice.

I'm having a blast following them, but the difference is that the American women are supposed to win at soccer. That makes it less interesting - it's more like following US basketball at the Olympics.

Men's American soccer is so much more intriguing to follow since it is so much worse comparatively and there is so much more decent competition.

What makes me LOL is a Mexican-American friend of mine who roots for the Mexicans in men's soccer and Americans in women's soccer. That's what I call being a bandwagon fan. :D

I don't find this true at all in this year's cup. There are at least 8 good sides in this competition, which is more than enough to make it totally different than USA Basketball, where, if we had our best players giving a damn, there would be BLOWOUTS all the way into the finals.

This is my first womens tournament to watch - I've enjoyed it. The game isn't nearly as athletic, but the movement and fundamentals are good - and the lack of cynicism is refreshing.

I went to a local bar to watch the game against France today and it was fun to see the joint totally packed and rocking like it was a USA Men's game.

Disagree. 6 or 7 different countries could have won the 08 Olympics. The problem with being so dominant is that it makes the other 3.9 years of the cycle less interesting to follow.

Besides, I'm glad to be able to watch soccer this month with both my male and female friends. I just wish they would follow the WPS also, and WPS needs to somehow get more interest from women.

Well, I love women's international soccer. Not as much as men's, because the scope is less wide and there's less to get invested in. But I do love it, and it has its own positives the men's game doesn't. However, everyone is into different things, so I'm sure you're not alone. As long as you're not actively rooting for us to lose, it's all good ;)

i certainly enjoy watching all aspects of soccer. I cant stand seeing the score (having DVR'ed the game) before watching a USMN or Fire match. But i honestly dont mind seeing the Women's score line before watching. I respect and applaud the women's game, but im not a die-hard by any means.

    Besides that, yes.

But really, if you look at the tournament as a whole, it has been mostly free of reckless challenges, diving, injury faking, time-wasting, etc.

The women's game is just so much more physical and the pace is a lot slower. Lots of players just running into each other and the ball just pops out of the challenges. Rarely is a goal ever created by stringing together passes and making it look good, often goals are the results of a scrappy play.

That said, it's nice watching the US women win, alothough for long portions of the game I find myself not really paying attention.

I'm really enjoying the WWCup and find myself more invested than I thought I would be. The game is not as fast as the Men's game, but I also find I'm able to find tactical aspects much better...especially with the various changes. The skill is also there, although there are some very silly slip ups.

The officiating, though, is often VERY infuriating. I can't believe the calls missed on a routine basis. It's extremely bad and FIFA should be ashamed that these are the best officiating crews they have to offer.

The women can give the men a lesson in mental toughness, effort and determination.

the women's game is a pretty different animal compared to the men's game, and that only makes sense. even though as it evolves, it gets closer to the men's game, it'll never be the same, so it's best to not really compare the 2 and just enjoy them as separate things. once you do that, it's pretty easy to get into it.

i have to admit, having traveled overseas for 2 mens world cups (in addition to usa '94 games), seeing a tournament live really hypes you up on the game, and gets you going as a fan, even when you watch on tv. after watching the women in '99 and '03 in the us, i went to germany this year, kinda last minute, after not following the women for a while. again, seeing live games really amps up the interest to the point where i actually get anxious before games. crazy wins help too!

I love the womens team, but the USMNT is for me. I'm still upset about the Gold Cup and even last years World Cup.

The USWNT gained a new hardcore fan in me. I used to figure that if I had a daughter, I'd get more invested in the team, but for some reason, be it disappointment in the men or just simply being impressed by the women, I've really enjoyed this cup.

I particularly love the 'We're ranked number 1 in the world but are the underdogs against everyone' ideal behind this team. In a sensible world, this line of thinking shouldn't make any, but with this team, it fits perfectly.

And while the tournament is still full of scrappy plays and displays of sloppiness, I've been overall impressed by the soccer minds many of these players have. No longer are the best teams the ones with the Amazon women and a few women who understood what to do with and without the ball. Instead, teams are stocked with intelligent and able players.

I'm excited to see how women's soccer progresses over the next couple of cycles. I'm ashamed to have never noticed the skill already evolving in the women's game.

I've watched most of the past two knockout games, but overall I haven't been following this World Cup nearly as close as I did the 07 one. The men's past year of suckitude culminating in an embarrassing Gold Cup final has reduced a decent bit of my enthusiasm for soccer across the board. Haven't watched any of the Copa America, and no MLS for a while now.

I agree with the original poster. I am a massive USMNT fan, but I'm not as excited as others when it comes to the USWNT. I feel horrible for saying that but I couldn't have cared less if they would've won against France. Okay, I take that back, I wish they would've laid further waste to the French.

History will show that 2011 is the year Women's Football has arrived. Before this year, there has been drama, but mostly sterile, boring football. "The women's teams are not physical, they don't foul much, there isn't a lot of diving, etc.". This year, all of that has been thrown out the window. The goals have been cracking, there is diving, kicking, cheapshots, and fluid football with end to end to final whistle. This has really been a superb tournament.

The one thing that men can learn from the women is that past the group stage in the World Cup, goals become harder and play becomes less fluid. In the Women's world cup, as the tournament progresses it seems that play becomes even more fluid and exciting, and far less conservative.

Also, give it up to the crowd. I love how even when a team is up by 2 goals and tries to bunker (Like Japan), the fans mercilessly whistle and boo. The fans are really turned off by cynical play (Witness the crowd reaction every time Brazil touched the ball against the USA) and let the players know it. A men's team like Italy, in front of Women's soccer fans, would be booed completely off the pitch.

Women's soccer to me is unwatchable..........it's like the WBNA.

But I'll watch the USWNT at the World Cup, and I'll root them on.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Just know this............Sunil Gulati will get re-elected if the USWNT win this event. It's the price we have to pay.

I kind of don't follow the ladies as much as in the past because the coach is crap and they play kickball. All fitness and guts but little skill
If they pull off a win this WC it will probably be the last one for a while
