This statement just is not accurate. It implies that Yael played largely at wing and that’s not true. Yael played a few games at wing, largely due to injury and experimentation. But the overwhelming majority of her caps came as a CM. Yael had 10 caps and five starts last year and those were really at CM. I think Averbuch should be on the WWC team over Lindsey so I’m not carrying Pia’s water. We can say Pia made the wrong choice in this instance but we cannot say with any fairness or accuracy that Averbuch didn’t get a chance to succeed at CM.

On Mitts. I have a great deal of respect for her as a player and a person. She has been the best RB on the WNT for the better part of the past decade and has been an exceptionally good role model and spokeswoman for the women’s game. But I do understand the concern of some who think she is not fit for WWC. Though I do have to say some posters have been dumping on her for years and would have been looking for an excuse for her not to be on the team and her latest injury provided that vehicle. I would think Krieger has won the starting RB job but when I hear people say that it’s just fate that Mitts will just re-injure herself I wonder where they got their medical degrees or if they examined Mitts' hammy personally.

And Whitney Engen, while an impressive young player, is clearly a CB and not an outside back so I am not sure why anyone thinks throwing her in the mix would have helped solve the problem at outside back. The problem here is that aside from Mitts, the team has just two natural outside backs, Cox and Krieger. I know that Amy L will probably play outside but that truly is an example of square peg in a round hole. And while some think Becky S could play there in a pinch, she never has in international competition. Unlike Averbuch, this is a situation for which I think Pia deserves some blame. She should have had more than three or four candidates in the mix at outside back this year. Britney Taylor or Kandace Wilson for example.

Nope WRONG WRONG WRONG, she was deployed as a winger. In germany as well as qualification. She didnt suit up at all for ALgrave Cup. The other tournaments or games they were involved in she sub in as a winger. Lori L, was the first sub for CM (Llyod). She may have come in for boxx once or twice in the second half, but the bulk of her chances were at wing.

your using just ur own opinion, not the facts. You may have thought she played CM bc she naturally drifts into the mid of the field. Pia wanted to use Yael out wide bc she thought Yael cud provide the service that they lack from the left side of the field. Yael is known for her passing with both feet esp from long distance. If you look back at Abbys goal against Germany, that came from a long distance cross from no other than Yael Averbuch. Bottom line is Yael did NOT get a fair shot at the team esp deployed as a winger. The vast majority of her time on the field was as a winger, you can ask her or the coaching staff and thats my evidence, jus in case.

I know you have problems with Lindsey, but I disagree. She played left wing in the 2010 Algarve and produced 3 assists. She's also the better fit to go in for either Lloyd or Boxx, thus, she's in, and not Averbuch. I expect we will see Averbuch as early as the Olympics tho. I think we are going to see quite a few changes for the Olys actually.

You make some good points. Pia probably did take Lindsey thinking she could back up at both attacking (Lloyd) and defensive (Boxx) mid. I personally feel Averbuch would be a better d-mid reserve and that Heath or Rapinoe could back up Lloyd OK but it's a close call. But when there is a close call like that, I would go with the younger player.

I suspect you are right that in the Olympics we will see an injection of younger players like Engen, Taylor, Averbuch, Edwards, Klingenberg, Farrelly, Harris etc... Maybe not all making the team but some will. Obviously Mitts, Rampne, Boxx and Lindsey are post 30 and are all candidates to be replaced.

Popp isn't surprising. Bajramaj not starting, however, is surprising. In the one video about the lineup it sounded like they were talking about why Okoyino da Mbabi got the start since I don't speak German... She has been on a scoring streak though so maybe they didn't want to sit her.

Popp has scored in their last 4 games or something like that tho and from reports has been playing better than most on the team... she is 20 years old.

Yeah but she has Prinz and Grings ahead of her in the lineup. Popp will be Germany's Alex Morgan.

Neid stated last week she's still figuring out the best formation/starters. I think it's interesting she is using some of her elder-statesmen. I think Popp will play more than Morgan, because of Pia's tactical style..but..

Popp has also played left back and in the midfield for Germany. Prinz has been playing in the midfield

I know most threads in this forum go wildly off topic but come on. Are we seriously turning this thread into a pbp a discussion of the German WNT game vs Norway and the German WNT roster? There are more appropriate places & threads for us to discuss such matters.

    /thread police carp

I could always start talking about WNBA, Eurobasket, and American players w/ Russian passports...

Well, this is what we'll need to watch for:

"Full-Time in Mainz: Germany Women 3-0 Norway Women (Laudehr 79, Popp, 81, 83). Norway defence went to sleep for 5 minutes, and were punished" from 11asideBlog World Wide
