The crash occurred just under an hour into race. Apparently, McNish was trying to overtake a Ferrari and his Audi teammate, Timo Bernhard. Amazingly, McNish got out the car without any major problems.

Apparently, McNish didn't see the Ferrari and the Ferrari driver didn't see McNish because of the Audi in between.
One big misunderstanding with terrible consequences. But we were lucky that nobody was hurt or killed, not McNish and nobody close the track or in the stands. Had McNish driven an open car like last year, he might not have been as lucky.

Later on, Mike Rockenfeller, another Audi driver had an even worse crash, again after overtaking a lower class Ferrari:
    [ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmn2YgPJEUE[/ame]

He hit the wall with over 300km/h. This time, the fault clearly was with the Ferrari. Terrible mistake there.
Rockenfeller is also apparently only mildly hurt (small flesh wound on his arm), but will stay in the hospital over night as precaution.

Very bad luck for the Audi team here, but the one remaining Audi is leading by 2 minutes as I write this at around half time.

Yeah, Benz..I saw that too--crazy! The four rings were crashing all over the place. I met both of those guys a couple of months ago, so it's kinda of eery for me to see those crashes.

Looks like the Audi no.2 has retaken the lead from Peugeot at the moment.

I just woke up and tuned back into LeMans only to see some exciting head to racing between the remaining Audi and two Renaults (and the third Renault was also in there, albeit one lap back), and that more than 17 hours into the race...unbelievable.

Audi now back in the lead and the commentators say that they need to gain around 1s per lap because Audi needs one additional pitstop due to higher fuel consumption. And that's exactly what Audi is doing ATM. It will be very tight no matter what.

Not to mention that there is a good chance that we'll get rain around 12 o'clock local time

The Peugeot of Alex Wurz has just crashed and is in for repairs. That reduces this to a two horse race, one Audi vs. one Renault.

Also, Audi just revealed that they don't have a higher fuel consumption, but rather a problem with their fuel tank meaning that they can't use the full 65 liters which are the limit set by the rules. As a result they also have slightly quicker pitstops, but they still need at least 1 second per lap...which they're getting ATM.

Less than three hours to go and it's looking good for Audi.

It's still a battle between the remaining N°2 Audi and the N°9 Peugeot.
The Audi now almost 20 seconds ahead with three more pitstops completed. Unless something unexpected will happen, this should be enough as I don't think they'll need another extra pitstop, but even if they would, the Audi is clearly the fastest car on the track and should easily be able to gain another 40 seconds before the end of the race.

There has been some sporadic rain on the track though, if that picks up this could of course change everything, or another pace-car period could also obliterate the Audi lead.

But assuming everything runs out smoothly, Audi clearly has the advantage now.

Of course I meant Peugeot...I guess I'm kinda mixed up with the F1 race going on later today...

Anyway, Rain is getting heavier, we've seen some high profile crashes, including the leading LMP2 car and the N°10 Peugeot.

Peugeot now making a smart move in splitting their strategy. The N°9 Peugeot just went out on slick tyres, while the N°8 Peugeot went on intermediates.

If Audi now makes the wrong decision, Peugeot will profit either way...though the N°8 Peugeot is now 2 laps back, so unless the Audi crashes out, they should be safe copying the N°9 car's strategy.

It's still wet...getting worse actually...the leading Audi has stayed on slicks though during the last pitstop which might turn out to be a mistake.

The N°8 Peugeot on intermediates is now 10s per lap faster than the leading Audi on slicks.

The N°7 Peugeot is 4 laps back and stays on slicks...a gamble they might very well make, they have nothing to lose and everything to win.

The N°9 Peugeot should come in soon as well, I expect it to go on intermediates but we'll see.

The N°2 Audi is still early in its stint, so we'll have to see whether they have to come in early or not...anyway, the Audi is really driving carefully...17 seconds slower than the N°9 Peugeot (also on slicks) on the last lap now...still 40 seconds ahead though...

And some bad sportsmanship from Peugeot...that was to be expected of course, this team has resorted to questionable tactics in the past after all...

This time, Marc Gene, being 4 laps down tried to push the leading Audi off the road...twice. It was blatant, it was dangerous and worst of all, he got away with it. Un-fcuking-believable...

The race is dry again and the final hour will be interesting. The N°2 Audi will probably need two more stops, the N°9 Peugeot will need one more stop, being 1m23s behind right now...

Unless something unforeseen happens, this will certainly be one of the closer LeMans finishes in history. It should work out for Audi but it's really only 20 seconds they're ahead right now if we deduct the minute for the pitstop, and in sports car racing, 20 seconds is nothing.

Awesome...both leading cars went into the pits simultaneously for the last time, Audi went for the risk to put on new tyres which took them longer but they came out just ahead of Peugeot...6 seconds or so. Unless something unexpected happens, Audi just won the race.

Audi Pulling away now, no chance for the N°9 Peugeot, he's already 10s back and falling further back quickly.

However, Marc Gene in the N°7 Peugeot is driving somewhat slowly, so the Audi will eventually run into him...given his previous misconduct, this could turn ugly...

And as I write this, it's starting to rain again...

Last lap...Audi N°2 is 16 seconds ahead, slowing down slightly.

And it's over. After 24 hours of bare-knuckle racing and after a very different approach in terms of strategy, Audi won by 13.854 seconds. Great race, a lot of drama, absolutely magnificent.

Has anyone noticed how lucky the one photographer that was walking away from the crash was?

There is a photographer in a light blue vest walking away from the area as the accident as it happens. The photographer doesn't even see what is going on. When he turns to look at what is happening one of the car's tires that has come loose lands right behind him and then while he is standing there it bounces back at incredible speed in front of him.

Twice that guy could have been taken out by the tire but wasn't.

Thank goodness it seems nobody was injured or worse.

Several people at the track there were really luck to walk away from that crash. There could have easily been one or more deaths.
