It's not a Texas thing. Growing up in Ohio in the early 80s people always referred to soccer as a commie sport.
I don't know where cp grew up, but perhaps it's a regional or decade thing. I grew up in the late 1950s and early 1960s in down state New York where soccer was avidly played by ethnic based teams and accepted by all as part of the recreational sports mix. I went to college in Indiana and soccer was certainly respected there as a college sport. Then on to North Carolina in 1968 where soccer was burgeoning as a youth and amateur sport and well accepted in the metropolitan areas. I never heard the "communist" moniker. So I gather that its a regional term of the 1980s indigenous to at least Texas and Ohio and perhaps other big football states?
I love the guy. He makes it so easy to hate HIM. But I'm a little mystified why it is called communist. Here's the England team saluting Hitler at the 1936 Olympics. How'd they ever live that one down?
Poor Notre Dame, we've hijacked their thread, but it's their own coach's fault. I grew up in Philly and, like you, never heard the "communist moniker." In fact, I grew up there in the same era as Soccerhunter except slightly earlier. The "communist moniker" is even more strange because high school soccer in those days was played only in the prep schools, which might have represented the other end of the spectrum. Of course, I played at a Quaker prep school, so maybe there's a link there. Also, there was an adult country club league, which most definitely would not have merited the moniker under any circumstance. Plus, when I started playing in high school, my father occasionally took me to see the Philadelphia Ukrainians play, as they were a very good semi-pro team and played about as high a level of soccer as one could see in those days. That might have qualified for the "commie" moniker except that some of them probably were refugees from the USSR.
This could be the Randy Waldrum board in the off-season. Re the World Cup team, he recently tweeted: "could u imagine Buz, DiMartino, Henderson, Barg, Ingrid Wells being in the pool a few years ago..we'd be in great shape for WC." "Buz", I take it from the context, is Jen Buczkowski. A nice tip of the hat to non-Irish DiMartino and Wells.

The best rivalry in college soccer continues. Notre Dame vs. North Carolina, Friday August 26th in Chapel Hill.
Agreed, and UNC will be thirsting for revenge, no doubt. If you go, MRAD, please post your impressions afterwards...I may be in South Bend for work (!) in mid-September and am hoping to make the Louisville game.

Some staff news from May: "Jeannette Boudway Promoted To Coordinator Of Women's Soccer Operations" "NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Jeannette Boudway, a three-year veteran on the staff of the Notre Dame women's soccer program, has been promoted to coordinator of soccer operations, head coach Randy Waldrum announced Wednesday. Boudway, who most recently was a volunteer assistant coach for the Fighting Irish from 2008-10, will fill the newly-created post and will be responsible for coordinating film exchange and video match analysis, as well as assisting with team travel, equipment, budgeting and on-campus recruiting, and helping direct the Notre Dame summer soccer camps." "We are so thrilled to be able to add Jeannette to our full-time staff," Waldrum said. "She has been an incredible contributor to our program during the past three years, particularly with her video expertise which will continue to be a huge bonus for us when it comes to player development. We're so grateful for the commitment and dedication she has shown and this promotion is a fitting and long-overdue reward for all of her hard work. . . ." Melissa Henderson can flat out play. She has to be coming in this year as the best player in the country. I'm still trying to find a way to go to Chapel Hill for the ND vs. UNC game on the 26th. I don't miss very many ND/UNC games over the years but man, flights are expensive from Chicago to RDU this time of year.
Just reloading. They have a very good freshman class and to hear Randy say the freshman came in ready to go is impressive.
A couple of those girls that I know of played on Club teams this summer to stay in shape. Sammy Scofield and Kecia Morway played with the Chicago Red Stars who made it to the WPSL Championship game.
Any one have any information on Nicole Rodriguez? She is a sophomore, but new to the roster, never mentioned in this year's or last year's recruiting article. Is she a walk on? Her club website (Oakwood, in CT), listed her as a class of 2010 signing.
Well, I bit the bullet and bought a ticket on American AA to RDU. This should be a good tourney and I haven't seen my friend kool-aide in a couple of years. So I figured what the heck. Plus, I'm going to go a few hours to the coast over the weekend and maybe get a golf game in or something. The Irish are bent on defending their National Championship and the Tarheels are bent on revenging that 4-1 loss to ND from last year.
