    FLASH PRE-SEASON

    A time of high hopes

My heart is already pumping fast in anticipation of the first news from Spring practice. In the meantime I have lots of questions.

    Here are a few.

    1. I am still wearing my black T and hat with forlorn but golden PRIDE. Does anyone know when we will be able to purchase some real Flash gear?

    2. When will the flashy new web page pop up? Actually the old one loads faster than the WPS page so I shouldn't complain.

    3. How did the Flash get so many TV games? I suspect it must be ratings. Everyone must want watch our outstanding mid-field and defense! For a quick link to the schedule go to http://aliriley.com and click on LINKS.

    4. Does anyone know how many games the World Cup players will miss? Presumably all the June games and into July for players making the second round.

Football Ferns beat Switzerland in Cyprus Cup

Ali Riley gets assist on winning goal.

In a big turn around from the game 1 loss, the kiwis dominated and held a comfortable 2-0 lead by half-time. A late error in the mid-field allowed Switzerland to get one back late in the game.

Ali had been playing forward in thee previous game but was switched to left and right back for the Switzerland match.

Flash won 2-0. Could have been more. Zerboni impressed.

Good God, I hope it could have been more since Buffalo is one of the worst teams in D1 Soccer. Happy to see Zerboni doing well, she was a cult hero down in Atlanta.

Do we know the lineup? Formation?
Considering they were without most of their assumed starters (Marta, Sinclair, Morgan, Averbuch, Seger, Engen, Chapman, Riley(maybe?), Harris) I wouldn't put much into this game.

Then again, the team that lined up yesterday could be very similar to what we see when the various NT players are gone..

To be precise, Buffalo was ranked #292 out of 322 teams in 2010. Definitely one of the worst. But, if all those players were gone, it's a slightly different story although it's not good for a bunch of pros not to blow out such a weak team. But again, as said, who was available and who played where?

If we consider that this is the first time the majority of the ladies are playing together, in addition to the fact that they didn't have a full side, maybe this tells another story.......if you really wanted to find out how well your reserves can play, especially after only being able to gel for a couple of days, then I think you're getting a fair evaluation of that talent. Now, if you had the full side there, with your projected starting lineup fully intact, then I would think that what you're saying is more noteworthy. Maybe as they go through their other preseason scrimmages with Niagara U and St. Bonaventure, they'll see some much stronger opposition. :D

She'll probably show up within a few weeks. I'm pretty sure Santos ended their season over a month ago. I think the last tournament they did was in January.

None of the major players have reported to their teams, why would Marta be the exception? And if I'm not mistaken the league have a set date or deadline when all players must report to camp. Maurine(BRA) who supposedly signed with WNY, said she was to report to the team on March 16th.

WNY already has 6 internationals, though. I think I remember hearing that Parker has citizenship and doesn't count as an international. Unless I missed something the limit on international players is 5. Someone would have to get dropped in order for Maurine to be signed. The transactions page on the WPS site technically doesn't say anything about Chapman or Seger being signed, but that doesn't really mean much considering how little the website has been updated in the offseason.

Also, pre-season roster updates have been announced and there is no mention of Maurine.

Apparently she is joining in May so they may make room for her once the roster is finalized. Also, the teams are allowed to have 6 internationals again so I'd assume someone has to have citizenship.. must be Parker.

Parker is a Canadian citizen and, as far as I know, doesn't have a green card. When Maurine is officially signed, one of the internationals will have to be let go (unless one of them gets their green card).
