Apparently being with the Union on a short-term basis was part of the agreement when he initially joined the team. http://www.philadelphiaunion.com/news/2010/11/veit-step-down-union-president
And then there were 5 expansion draftees left. LE TOUX ZIMMERMAN MIGLIORANZI HARVEY JACOBSON People scratched their heads at some of the picks when they happened, and they have to scratch their heads now as the argument made then, about team chemistry, good locker room guys, and "Nowak players" is quickly diminishing.
The thing about the expansion draft is, the players available are players nobody else wanted. Nobody expected the Union to be able to build a world-class club with the twelfth best player on every other MLS team. This time last year, Seattle had seven of their expansion draftees on their roster. Now I think they're down to four, only three of whom are real contributors to their team (Jaqua, Riley, and Evans). San Jose, who had the previous expansion draft, only selected two players who started the second season with the club, and one player who started the third (Jason Hernandez). Toronto didn't have a single expansion-drafted player suiting up for their sophomore season. The fact is, the expansion draft can help you out with role players other teams think are disposable, and requires that you put them on your senior roster. It makes sense to replace Brad Knighton with Zac McMath, not just because McMath has a bigger upside but because he's Generation Adidas and on the non-cap roster. It makes sense to replace some of our expansion draft defenders with international signings, because if Valdes had been available in the expansion draft, you can bet we would've taken him instead. Just by getting Le Toux, Nowak has done better than most other expansion draft coaches in MLS history. Go back and look at the players available. Even in hindsight, there are only a few real missed opportunities there, if you remember that the team were projecting Chris Seitz as a solid MLS starter. Mike Chabala got left on the board; is there anyone else you really think would have had a better chance of contributing in 2011?
It's probably just as well how it turned out because our expansion draft influenced every draft pick and acquisition afterward which, the majority of, I have agreed with even if they didnt turn out perfectly. We passed over Chabala to set up the trade with Houston for Califf's rights IIRC, and passing over the desirable depth on RSL's roster was the deal for them agreeing to trade Seitz (Grabavoy, Russell). Russell, I think, could have been a solid role player at right back. Even a guy like Chris Tierney (speculative at the time, but so was Myrie) could have made a difference in quality and positional depth. It's all hindsight - but you are right. Le Toux was the steal of the draft. I don't see Jordan Harvey disappearing soon (and certainly not for free since LB is not a deep position league-wide) and I have great hope that Jacobson will turn into the player we have hoped for him to be. I can't say I've been disappointed by Migz - he's been servicable at worst, and Zimmeman may surprise everyone still. Maybe at the end of this season, we will be proclaiming their brilliance once again.
Although Salinas was a good pick, if the wikipedia article is correct on who was available we could have selected the Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski ... WOW Other than that your not far off by saying we only missed a few opportunities. I know hindsight is 20-20 but think about Wondolowski-Mwanga at striker and Le Toux at attacking mid wow, never realized he was available.
And we passed on Convey as well (not taking into account any friction between him and Nowak), who had a career season last year. I thought Ballouchy would have been picked, but Harvey accounted for the chosen Rapids' player. Would the former have had better impact w/ the Union than the latter? The world will never know.
Considering wondolowski had a break out season and previously put up good numbers while in reserves, the comment would basically be "hindsight is 20-20" and "who knew". Because he had a fantastic year with S.J. doesn't really mean it would have translated over here with the Union. He did get more starts this year than any other year previously for himself, and even the year before with half the appearances, most probably subs, he didn't score anywhere near ratio of this year. We'll see how he is this year. He's a force to reckon with no doubt, but i'm not crying. It may just have been "his year" kind of thing.
https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=19351694&postcount=303 Here is the link for my team-by-team analysis from November 2009 of the unprotected players for the Union's Expansion Draft. Since there is a domino effect based on each player (or not taken), it is impossible to know exactly how things would have changed if the Union drafted a different player but here are a few observations: * as other have noted, the Seitz decision (passing over Hartman - making hte trade to acquire Seitz and thus have a hands-off any RSL players in the Expansion Draft, having to get Mondragon as a more expensive veterna option a season later) was clearly the biggest mistake * they certainly could have gotten better value than Myrie (just to mention a few [none of whom would have had a big impact on the 2010 season] - Dallas had a couple of young LBs in Wallace and Wagner, KC had CB Besler, Revs had LB/LM Tierney and DM Phelan) - they rolled the dice on him, lost and quickly cut the ties to him. * as Heat noted, Houston had a hands-off policy for its players in the Expansion Draft due to the Califf trade * as Dills noted, Convey would have been a good pick but it never was going to happen with Nowak in charge - I did mention Salinas, Wondolowski (although viewing him as a cheap depth forward not a Golden Boot candidate) and him as the 3 options from the Quakes. * there were several international players options who could have been useful (Iro or Renteria from Columbus instead of Moreno, Ballouchy from Colorado instead of Harvey although I am not sold that Ballouchy would be a fit in Nowak's 4-2-2-2 since Ballouchy is mainly a central AM) In Summary: * Le Toux alone was worth it all * they got some serviceable players in Harvey, Migioranzi and Jacobson (plus Knighton for the games that he did play) - jury is still out on Zimmerman but he is young * Moreno and Salinas were serviceable for a season and them getting plucked in the Expansion Draft prevented others from being picked. * Thomas was parlayed into some draft picks and $$ - which was somewhat sent to Columbus to get Brian Carroll who, other than Le Toux, should provide more value than any other Expansion Draft pick * Myrie was a gamble who ended up being a waste of a pick
Two more ex-Zolos in MLS: Fred is back in DC, and Jacobson is headed for Dallas. Active players (MLS) Fred Carreiro da Silva (2010 re-entry draft): D.C. United Andrew Jacobson (traded 2/18/2011): Dallas Alejandro Moreno (2010 expansion draft): Chivas USA Brian Perk (waived 7/30/2010): Los Angeles Shea Salinas (2010 expansion draft): Vancouver Chris Seitz (2010 re-entry draft): Dallas Shavar Thomas (traded 6/30/2010): Kansas City Active players (non-MLS) David Myrie (released 3/30/2010): Limón, Costa Rica Primera Division Active players (unattached) Eduardo Coudet (waived 2/14/2011) Brad Knighton (waived 1/25/2011) Toni Ståhl (option declined 1/14/2011): On trial with IFK Norrkoping Cristian Arrieta (waived 2/8/2011)
I have upcoming interviews with Salinas and Jacobson. Trying to track down Stahl and Knighton's agents. Trying to figure out how to get in contact with Coudet and Myrie. Waiting to hear back on Moreno, Fred and Thomas. Need to try for Perk and already interview/wrote about Seitz. http://www.brotherlygame.com/2011/2...ons-get-answers-andrew-jacobson--shea-salinas Going to have interviews with both Salinas and Jacobson today. The article above gives you the ability to post questions in the comments section that I can ask either of them to answer.
Tom's position was always a temporary one. I think he was brought in to run the business portion of the franchise: hiring, marketing, media carriage & overseeing every manner of finances.
Thanks for the Veit update. I knew him when he was at USF and he seemed very content there, so I assumed he only left for Philly for a permanant position. Well good luck to him.
This is true. Jacobson did get a red card in yesterday's scrimmage vs. Seattle. However, it was a really bad call. In fact, it was made by the very same, bush league, referee who banged Valdez with a red on Saturday night. It looked more to me, like Andrew made a challenge and had minimal contact, while at the same time, the opponent fell. The Dallas bench was quite upset at the call. In other news, Seitz played the entire second half and did not give up a goal. He made three incredible saves. Both guys said they were sorry to leave Philadelphia, yet they were looking forward to playing with Dallas.
Eduardo Coudet (and former Union trialist Aaron Wheeler) both played for Ft. Lauderdale Strikers (formerly Miami FC) in its match today against the Red Bulls - Coudet is there trial there while Wheeler is already signed. Ft Lauderdale Strickers: Nick Platter; Martin Lancaster, Aaron Hoboken, Rob Valentino y Lance Laing; Paulino, Eduardo Coudet, Bruno Silva, Bryan Arguez; Aaron Wheeler y Martín Núñez. http://www.newyorkredbulls.com/news/2011/02/red-bulls-vence-los-strikers-de-ft-lauderdale-2-0 Coudet would follow in the foot steps of another Argentine skilled midfielder (Christian Gomez) who went from MLS to Miami when he just did not have the pace anymore to stay in MLS - just like Coudet. Wheeler has a bio page on the team website but it does not have much info. http://www.miamifc.com/roster/show/id/148

Sounds like a former fan favorite is injury-prone. http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2011/03/vancouver-whitecaps-shea-salinas.html
That sucks for him. Hope he doesn't end up having to call it quits on a pro career because of injury. So many promising players have to do that. (of course, if he does - i hope he ends up back in Philly, can help out with our coaching and joins us in the stands to Doop)
