Ronaldo was a great player. When he was in his prime he was like the
Jordan of soccer. He deserves a new thread just for how great he was for Brazil and for soccer!

Re: Ronaldo - O Fenômeno (set to retire Monday)

It's very big news in Brazil - all the major newspapers/portals are covering this. This is the biggest retirement since Romario left the game - it might be bigger because Romario dragged his career longer than Ronaldo did.

He may have been less careful than he could have been in keeping fit, but the numbers do not lie. It's not only Brazilians who will always have grateful hearts towards his contributions on the pitch. PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Internazionale, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Corinthians fans will always remember his plays and goals. And we who are fortunate enough to have been born in Brasil will always be grateful for his goals in 2002 which helped us win the fifth star on our soccer jersey - especially the two goals against the Germans in the final.

I have to quote Galvao Bueno; it's something Bueno said live when Ronaldo was finally handed the FIFA WORLD CUP trophy, kissed it, and lifted it during the postgame championship celebration. "E agora, Ronaldo. Voce merece. Por tudo que voce passou e por tudo que voce fez!" (And now, Ronaldo. You deserve it. For all that you went through and for everything you did!)

Much of the soccer world declared his career dead after his disturbing injury, when his knee collapsed and Ronaldo screamed in agony. Well, he proved a lot of people wrong when he lifted that trophy in Yokohama on June 30, 2002.

Ronaldo - he joins Vava, Djalma Santos, Pele, Garrincha, Amarildo, Jairzinho, Romario, Bebeto, in the pantheon of Brasil's best of the best, in Brasil's hall of World Cup champions.

    VALEU RONALDO!

Re: Ronaldo - O Fenômeno (set to retire Monday)

I think it will be bigger in large part because of the "what if" that will always surround his career. What if he hadn't entered the 1998 WC injured? What if he hadn't suffered multiple surgeries pre-2002? Ronaldo from 1995-1997 promised so much, his performances were so spectacular and unstoppable. If you had the privilege of watching him alongside Romario pre-1998 you may have seen the most perfect striking partnership any country has known in generations.

It's amazing that the World Cup's leading goalscorer is about to retire and it feels like there was a time when you expected so much more from him.

My life as a soccer fan will always be linked to his career - he's my age, I used all the money I had in 1998 to go to France and watch Brazil and was devastated by that experience. In 2002 I was living on my own for the first time (besides college) and, well... we won. I don't know how to describe it. I'll always remember the highlights from his career, it'll be hard to keep myself from going into what ifs though.

The best player I have and will ever see. After the heartbreak in 98, to come back and have the splendid career with all those injuries was just remarkable. I hope we never forget what he did for us, especially on that summer day in 2002

That continues to be the happiest day of my life and it's all thanks to Ronaldo. The greatest striker of all time. Thank you for everything :)

I just tuned to Fantastico and found out. Galvao Bueno mentioned Ronaldo, and I knew right away - a dagger hit my heart. I also will always remember and cherish Ronaldo for bringing me some of the happiest moments of my life. And the day I met with Ronaldo several years back in Chicago during a Real Madrid friendly with the Fire, will always be remembered until my death. Signed shirt of the selecao Ronaldo gave me rests above my bed. I wish you all of the happiness in the world that you so deserve. Ronaldo will always be a hero for all of us Brazukas.

    :(

    What a fantastic player.

He may only have been at Milan for a short time... but I'll remember this:

His time at Milan may have not been great, but he's still in my heart.

    I salute this legend!

I'm going to try to find videos of his partnership with Romario, that period of the Brazilian national team was sheer ecstasy to me.

In the meantime, here's a classic, one of Nike's first sensational soccer commercials:

It's the right decision. I am glad to hear he is not going to play in the Brasileirao. There is not point. It would only tarnish his legacy even more.

Here is a summary of his career, personal and professional by Globo. Check out the first picture where you can slide back and forth a picture of Ronaldo in 2010 and Ronaldo back in 96.

    http://globoesporte.globo.com/futeb...-em-colecionar-insucessos-e-adversidades.html

There is also an awesome compilation about his career on youtube with lots of highlights I hadn't seen before. I watched it about a month ago. It's very long (around 6 hours) cut off in 39 parts of 10 min video. It can be self indulgent and repetitive at times but very worth it. Here is the first video. It's called "A Life for a Goal".

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMiusIUUqWs"]YouTube - Part 1/39: "A LIFE FOR A GOAL" -- The ultimate RONALDO MOVIE ! ! ! [HD][/ame]

And here is the highlights from Ronaldo's 2nd game for the Selecao (against Iceland) and his first goal. His first game was against Argentina but I believe he barely played coming in only as a sub. There are many other Ronaldo game highlights on Youtube named Ronaldo vs .... Enjoy !!!

I was present in Recife when he played his first game for Brazil. One of the greatest players to have played the greatest sport. One of the few oppostion players to get a standing ovation from Old Trafford when he scored 3 there for Real against United.

I dare say Ronaldo was more important for our country's soccer than Zico's generation - a generation for whom I have monumental respect.

Pelé, then Garrincha, then Romário, and then Ronaldo. I wonder who will be the next great Brazilian superstar whose goals will bring us a World Cup title.

The interesting part is that the Brazilian media is treating as if the hypothyroidism problem is something new. As far as I am concerned Ronaldo announced this back at AC Milan when was diagnosed with it. It's nothing new.

A doctor interviewed at Jovem Pan said with the necessary hormonal treatment there should be no reason a person can't be fully normal with this problem. Ronaldo did mention he something about the treatment containing substances that are on the FIFA ban list ... so I assume he couldn't do the whole treatment. I am not sure about the validity of this point but I remember at Milan they said they were going to do the necessary treatment to "cure" him.

Had no idea the big guy struggled to make it up stairs. Should of retired a while back tbf if that was the case.

Total respect to a true legend. I'm saddned to hear of his medical issues with weight gain. If only things were different and he was able to maintain shape and not feel pain. :(

A sad, sad day for football. LEt's hope his two son's are blessed with his talents, heck even half would still make them very good.

    Some Twitter quotes.

It's hard to speak about him... since I was little... I called him "DAD"... I am very proud of having worked and played by his side... I can only thank the greatest CRAQUE I've seen play and one of Brazil's greatest heroes!
    - Dentinho, Corinthians forward

Ronaldo, thank you very much for everything you did for the game, for soccer, for Brazil, and for thousands of people all over the world. You're an example! And it's with much pride that I can say I played with one of the best players in the history of soccer. May God continue to bless you in this new phase of your live. You are, have always been, and will always be the PHENOMENON.
    - Kaká, Real Madrid midfielder

Thank God I had the honor of playing by his side. One day I'll tell my grandchildren I played side-by-side with one of the greatest forward in history.
    - Luis Fabiano

A sad day for soccer. The Ronaldo legend has left soccer. I will always remember the 1996/97. The best player I've seen.
    - Cesc Fabregas, Barcelona/Spain midfielder

From now on he'll turn into a legend, he'll join many other greats who filled us with joy with their masterpieces. Thankfully for us in Brazilian soccer that's how it is; some go and some come.
    - Mano Menezes, Brazil NT manager

I understand this would be the ideal moment indeed, for a series of factors that he placed in his farewell. I want to tell him that as I believed he would have been one of the best players for our national team on that opportunity, I believe also that at this moment he scored a great goal.
    - Luiz Felipe Scolari, Palmeiras manager, and former Brazil NT manager; with Ronaldo, 2002 World Cup champion

Today we said goodbye to one of the greatest. Thanks to Ronaldo for all these years, you made us enjoy your soccer.
    - Andrés Iniesta, 2010 World Cup champion midfielder w/ Spain

As most of us here are Brazilian, you guys have probably read Brazilian fans' comments online. Out of curiosity, I checked out what Argentina's newspapers were saying, and I was pleasantly surprised. Here are some translated online comments about his retirement:

"Please don't disrespect him by comparing him to Messi."

"I remember a Copa America in which Brazil beat us; he crossed our entire side of the pitch and scored when the game was almost over. This isn't for anybody."

"What a great player you were, Ronaldo. I've never seen a striker with so much ability, potency, and quality all together. The best 9 I've seen in my life, and you contend for the position of the best 9 of all time without any doubts. Champion of everything, a pleasure to watch you play. Beyond the eternal rivalry, and the goals you scored against us in various opportunities, you have all my admiration and respect. An eternal craque."

"Valdano gave the best definition of Ronaldo. He said that when he ran with the ball at his feet it was like watching "a herd of buffaloes." Potency, ability, and class, all in one."

Man... it's indeed not just us Brasileiros who recognize the greatness of Ronaldo. We are truly very blessed he was born in Brazil and that his talent was displayed for our joys.

A great, pure goal-scorer who was also an absolute joy to watch. Always feel a bit robbed that some of what should've been his best years were never really there because of the injuries. But the mid-late 1990's... I can look back at those years with awe at what he was capable of doing.
