I still like "Is that Wood in your lederhosen or are you just glad to see me" The dailies are picking up on his call up. Nothing new...same report as early simply rehashed by the afternoon dailies to fill print space. However, a nice montage of the young 1860 prospects in the pipeline.
Fresh Kid Ice! I believe he was of Chinese and Trinidadian decent. Poor fella had a stroke recently, iirc.
Wood is on the roster for tomorrow's game. With Rakic suspended and several of the usual wingers out, guys who might play ahead of him in the striker role like Zeireis or Volland, might be held as winger options. The only other pure strikers on the traveling team are Lauth and Ludwig, both starters. If Ludwig does not have a good game I could imagine Wood might see some game time around the 60th min. The game kicks off at 1800 German time, 11:00am US CST. Bundesliga.de has a radio simulcast but you have to register (free) in advance. The 1860 website has a ticker, as does Kicker.
One of my favorite episodes... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msVx-VAPoq8"]YouTube - Beavis & Butt-Head #222 ~ Be All You Can Be (1993)[/ame] (The related content is at the end.)
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/postcard-europe-wood-perseveres-1860 Very impressive mindset. It's not easy going over to a different culture, having to learn a new language, etc., as early as he did. So far, so good.
The 1860 academy is pretty regimented adn the language classes used to be daily, along with your other studies....unless he was allowed to go to the international school in Starnberg instead of the local German schools, then it would take longer to learn the language. He seems well liked and the fan like his work ethic.
Yup, he's American. "I'd like to work on finishing," he said. "It's been my down part as a forward. I'd like to get better on that."
It's like Howard coming out and saying "I'd like to work blocking shots. It's been my down part as a goalie." Bobby Wood does sound like he's got a good head on him, look forward to seeing him in action come the summer!
Might be earlier than that. A few of the 1860 strikers are not healthy right now and the coach seems more than willing to take a chance on youth.
Here's a kid who wants to put in extra work improving his game. I think it should be applauded not ridiculed.
Settle down. No one is ridiculing him. He said finishing is the weakest part of his game. He's a forward. He's American. American forwards have trouble finishing. It was just a comment based on all that. We all want the best for the kid and admire his talent and dedication and everyone of us hopes he goes on to be a prolific goal-scorer. That doesn't mean we can't smirk/joke/cringe when one of our brightest forward prospects says the weakest part of his game is similar to the weakest part of many other American forwards' game.
He's been at 1860 for four years, and very formative ones at that. I wouldn't throw him into a bin with the rest of the Americans until it's all said and done. At 18, that is far from true. Besides, you can't correlate his experience with most other Yanks simply because he's not in an American youth environment. You've got to take it more at face value simply because he's not so easily compared to other forwards his age. I react to the jokes simply because they gloss over the simple fact that it is apples and oranges.
Then article that was posted from the US press has been translated for one of the German dailies. There are a few different quotes in this one than in the US version. Posted here.
Here's a write-up from the 1860-Duisburg on yanks-abroad.com with some post-game words from both Wood & Yelldell. http://www.yanks-abroad.com/get.php?mode=content&id=7333
Who? The Duisburg keeper? He's no more American than Jermaine Jones is. BTW, I was joking about Bobby. Just thought the pronunciation of the team name was funny...
