Wow, I guess we've reached a new level.

Just a few thoughts from a different perspective...

I think most of the diehard supporters will not be dissuaded by a 20 minute or so walk, but I wonder how the casual or new fan will feel about a 20 minute walk, especially if it's through a dodgy neighborhood at night.

A few posts back someone referenced an "abled bodied man". Unfortunately not all of us are able bodied. My wife has had both knees replaced and the walk to RFK from the metro (about 1/2 mile) was about all she could do for most of last season. The trip to the SE tailgate was too much, especially walking down the hill or the steps. For some of us that distance is a very real consideration.
Supposedly the walk from the metro station to Fed Ex is just over a mile. I walk about 3 miles each day, so it shouldn't be a problem, but the hill (to Fed EX) makes that walk seem a lot longer. Does anyone know what the topography is like at Buzzard's Point?

And before my comments are dismissed as being from some old fart feeling sorry about his lost youth, consider where you'll be in 15 years. I remember laughing and running with my kids from the metro to that first game in '96.

More potential development at Buzzard's Point:

    http://dcmud.blogspot.com/2011/01/kick-start-for-buzzards-point.html

No idea where the Deason lot sits in relation to the Akridge lot, or what potential impact having a condo development at the former would have on a potential stadium deal.

    1. He was joking

    2. Not everyone is going to be forced to walk from the Metro station. There will be other options, but saying ... in any way shape or form ... that a 20-minute walk from the Metro for some fans should be an impediment to one of the few sites which seems like a logical possibility to keeping DCU in the District is asinine, plain and simple.

Yeah, it might suck, but so would the team moving. Since the walk isn't mandatory, consider the big picture.

From the pic, it looks like it sits right on the river between the Pepco station and the Coast Guard building. In the aerial shot above this one, it's the open triangular lot. It would be caddy-corner from the SW edge of the Akridge lot.

Well, if you could turn some of the positive future rather than conditional tenses used in these posts into action, the stadium would be underway.

I, however, am not so positive. Those who say the first thing United needs is ownership with money to pay for a stadium are, I think, on track. As that unidentified DC government member said, United hasn't brought anything to the table.

Yes, I know he was joking, but I thought the hyperbole was well over the top: just my sensibility. Some people have legitimate concerns about access.

My other point was making the stadium attractively accessable to the casual or new fan. Others have posted about the difficulty in driving there. (Am I mixing up the two sites?).

Accessability is a valid criterion when choosing a site.

Let's get construction started on a stadium first and then pester the club about accessibility.

Totally off the wall question, but is it legal/possible for Will Chang to cut a deal with Akridge or another developer for a stake in the team in return for financing part of the stadium?

The walk from Navy Yard Metro to Buzzard Point would not be dodgy on a match night. You'd be walking through a new strip of bars/restaurants/shops around the new baseball stadium and across South Cap to a new development containing the stadium. People just assume that Near SE is dangerous, but it's all brand spanking new and safe - I frequently walk from the Hill to Nats games.

The rough area is in SW - a few blocks north of a potential Buzzard Point development.

Nothing a few cop cars on the corner couldn't ameliorate. I've seen them up in there during Nats games.

Yeah, I played Ice Hockey in SE, went to the East Side club in SW, and went to restaurants everywhere in the city. And still play soccer on the Ellipse, when the youngsters don't hangovers (come to think of it that is probably the most dangerous place in the city!). Pretty dangerous city.

I can't see any issues with the legality of such an arrangement. I assume MLS has approval rights over any new onwer buying a stake in a team, but I doubt they would have any problems with a company like Akridge buying into the league.

So I'm sure this has been proposed in another long since closed edition of this thread ... but what would be the likelihood/feasibility of starting some sort of "buy-a-brick" (or whatever you want to call it) campaign?

DCU could get creative in the way they pay if back (should not having your name engraved in stone suffice the need to immortalize your contribution to the tradition) ... free game a year for life? free food/drink card? luxury box shin-dig? I dunno, I'm asking.

Re: Stadium News and Speculation XXIV: In Buzzard We Trust?

The irony here is we've got an LA boy trying to point out exactly what part of SW/SE DC is dangerous, when the folks who should at least have half an inkling don't really know.
QPRK is right as is anyone who's actually gone to a Nat's game or is somewhat familiar with the area. Have you guys seen the Safeway and adjacent redevelopment at 4th and M St. SW??? It's like they airlifted part of Clarendon to SW DC yo! lol.
My whole point is that while the walks are what they are, the neighborhood itself is changing for the better.
One thing I couldn't believe in moving to the DC area from Seattle was how underdeveloped the waterfront property in the area was. Any and every move in that direction has been a source of excitement from me. I don't know what it is, but I love the water! EVERYONE wants to go enjoy themselves near something picturesque. If you don't have natural vistas, you must build tall buildings, or build next to water to really do that.
Shit, I should go to architecture school or something..:)
