He's signed with IFK Mariehamn. Soccer Insider had it first, but here's confirmation from the club: http://www.ifkmariehamn.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2025&Itemid=1 Amusingly, the URL for the photo includes the words "silly_season" in the code. Trafford was born in Florida in 1986, but was apparently raised in Canada.
Snip: “It’s nice to be somewhere where everyone is so into the sport. The crowd is a good group of supporters that know the game and seem to be organized. We’re in a small city so everyone knows us and the whole city is behind us. It’s exciting to be part of it because the European culture towards football is quite a bit different as opposed to in Canada and the U.S. The locker room dynamic has a different feel and the football has a different philosophy as well. With the Whitecaps, there was a lot more diversity in terms of older players with families and wives and kids. Our training setup at SFU wasn’t really conducive to having guys come in and hang out in the morning or after training and be around the club. Here the guys are all close to the same age and everyone comes in the morning quite early and sits around, has a coffee and jokes around. After training it’s the same thing. With the Whitecaps it was more get-in-get-out,” he said. Read more: http://www.nsnews.com/hard+road+pros/3557287/story.html#ixzz10IHP47YR
Since there is no [R] highlight to reveal news from today's match: Trafford scored an own goal and the team lost by 1 - Mariehamn 1:2 KuPS.
Not that anyone DVRed this one, but the invisible ink could be a useful trick all over BS. Good idea.
Trafford appears to be the only YA left at former YA haven IFK Mariehamn. He went the distance in a 3-1 road loss to defending champions HJK. Last year Trafford appeared in 28 of 33 league games, starting 25, scoring 1 goal, and picking up 1 red card. IFK Mariehamn finished mid-table in 7th.
Mason Trafford says he is unlikely to return to Mariehamn next season. It seems he is looking for new challenges.
Trafford has been called into the full Canadian NT for his (potential) first cap at any level at the 2 friendlies in the US in January: http://www.canadasoccer.com/canada-mnt-names-young-squad-for-january-camp-p153022
Here's an informative story about Mason's life and times in China: “It was quite an experience both from a football standpoint and a life standpoint,” Trafford told RedNation. “It was really interesting and also quite difficult to adjust to, especially at the start. As the months went on it was always interesting and also a challenge, but it started to get more fun as I went along. I saw the different culture and the different ways they would do things over there.” http://www.rednationonline.ca/Articles2012/TraffordbuoyedbyexperienceplayinginChina.aspx
Trafford has signed with the NASL Ottawa Fury: Ottawa Fury FC today announced the club’s ninth Canadian signing as Mason Trafford joins from Chinese League One side Guizhou Zhicheng, pending international transfer. Trafford began his professional career with the Vancouver Whitecaps and would eventually spend two-and-a-half years in the Finnish Premier League with IFK Mariehamn. http://www.ottawafuryfc.com/news/detail/uuid/1t8k3n2ptjwue1t0r4k3dcb8tl#.UyddjRBdV7f
He's a '97 and a U.S. U18 currently on an amateur contract with the NASL Railhawks: Despite committing to North Carolina during his sophomore year, Mason is looking to play on a top-tier club in England or Spain in the fall. Mason will leave on July 18 for a tryout with Huracán Valencia CF, a club in the Segunda División B league, the third division of soccer in Spain. He said he would consider playing for North Carolina after deferring a semester if the right opportunity isn’t presented in Spain. But he’s hoping this is where his pro career blossoms.
