Roxbury sophomore Dylan Castanheira (Stoke City) and midfielder Vinny Marna of Montgomery (Swansea City) also traveled abroad to train. Castanheira has been invited back later this month, and may receive a professional contract from the EPL team.

The 15-year-old goalkeeper from Landing trained with Stoke City in the English Premier League for a week in August. And the 6-foot-2 Castanheira made such an impression he's already been invited back.

All this before he even started his sophomore year at Roxbury High School.

    ...

Castanheira has been invited to return for two weeks in October. Stoke City is sending him training gear, so he can wear it on the flight back to England. Brown believes Castanheira will be offered a two-year youth contract after that visit, if he is able to obtain a Portuguese passport and European Union work visa. Both Luis and Maria Castanheira, Dylan's parents, were born in Portugal, and his grandparents still live there.

Another promising young GK. Is there any way we can trade a few of these to another country for some promising young strikers?

my is always "is he among our best? or do we have better ones who just aren't fortunate enough to get a euro passport?"

Really. Everytime I open one of these threads about a new, potential yank abroad and I see "goalkeeper" I'm a bit disappointed.

    Snip:

When Dylan Castanheira reports to Columbia University's campus in upper Manhattan today, his long, international ordeal will finally be over. Castanheira, a 19-year-old goalkeeper from Landing, has played with many teams and traveled even more miles pursuing his soccer dream.

    ...

Castanheira gave up his senior year at Roxbury to join the under-18 team at Bristol City – a third-division team in England – on a two-year youth scholarship in July 2012. After a season, those players became "like my family," and Castanheira was less happy as a part of the U-21 squad. "A little homesick," he chose to return to Landing and concentrate on finding a college soccer team instead.

He has been a beast for Columbia. In 2016, both his GAA of 0.291 and SV% of 0.903 were best among all NCAA Div 1 keepers with qualifying playing time. Columbia had a 9-1 record in matches he played.
