For the moment, they are actually pretty fair. The only thing you can say is they are way to generous in some of those who went up (Panama)... but they did play pretty well the last two games. They seem motivated heading into next years Central American Championship and did the right thing naming Julio Dely Valdes Coach.

Now seriously, I think Guyana might be overrated. Are they better than Suriname, Haiti, and Nicaragua.

Guyana has contacted the Guatemala football federation and requested a friendly for one of the October FIFA match days. Seems like they wanna climb the rankings a little bit more.

No, you definitely should not. I can name more than 10 European teams alone that are better. That's without mentioning the 5 south american nations and 3 african nations that are better than the U.S.

Nothing against the US, and right now I would say they are the best in CONCACAF, but 18 is as high as they should possibly be, but honestly no lower than 25. It's a fair enough ranking for them, but by no means should they be any higher.

Also since I'm definitely not a homer, although it is sad to say, Canada and Trinidad should be swapped, Trinidad should be 7, and my beloved Canada, sadly, should be 1 lower.

Finally, Haiti > Antigua/Barbuda, Guyana, Cuba, and Barbados

As "13370" mentions above, let's take a closer look at the break points for the (presumably) four pots for WCQ draws; specifically, the breaks at 8-to-9, 16-to-17, 24-to-25, and (to a lesser extent) 29-to-30 for the preliminary round.

As the (August) FIFA article says, most of the point changes were from the results of previous years getting downgraded in value, especially for the Gold Cup, so you might say that these numbers will be (for the most part) the new "base" that points gained would get added to: http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/news/newsid=1283437.html

(And note the new weightings for the confederations: CONCACAF goes up from 0.86 to 0.88; the best outside of the big two.)

So a look at the numbers... a healthy 74-point difference between (8) Trinidad and Tobago, and (9) El Salvador. I still wonder if (7) Canada could get caught, even with a 107-point edge over El Salv.

Only 49 points separate the logjam from (12) Guyana to (17) Suriname. This bunch of teams could get interesting to watch.

Points get scarce in the mid-20's, so it's tough to predict the grouping from (23) Belize to (27) Dominican Republic. Teams (25) Dominica to (27) DomRep will have to double their point totals to get over the bubble to 24-th. Anyone want to take a guess if (21) Bermuda or (22) Netherlands Antilles will take a slide?

There couldn't be a closer race to get to 29-th, and out of the preliminary round, with (28) Turks and Caicos Islands, (29) St. Lucia, and (30) British Virgin Islands separated by only one point; with (31) Bahamas not too far behind.

So, class, who do you like in each of the blocks: 1-8 [let's say 3-8 and keep USA and MEX out of the discussion], 9-16, 17-24, 25+ ? Who's your "sleeper" team in each block?

Now, of course, I am only guessing that there would be pots of 8 teams each. I almost wonder if there would get eight pots of four teams, so teams 1-4 would be guaranteed to be drawn with teams 29-32. In that case, you would want to look at the race between 4-to-5, where (3) Honduras or (4) Costa Rica could get caught by (5) Panama.

The Netherlands Antilles at 22 are my dark horse. Their roster on paper is very impressive with a lot of players in the top two tiers of Dutch football and several others playing at high levels around Europe. There are probably others they can pull out of the woodwork and bring on board as well. I was surprised they didn't make the group stage last time around but I fully expect them to at least make the last 16 this time and even contend for a spot in the last 8.

Grenada could also be dangerous. They gave Costa Rica a heart attack last time around.

New rankings are out. Interestingly, Guyana has cracked the top 8 (important for the WCQ draw) and Guatemala slips out of the top 12. If the semi-final group stage draw was held now there would be the possibility of a group consisting of Panama, Guyana, Barbados, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. There would also be a group of death possibility with a scenario such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guatemala.

Well as long as Canada isn't in a group of death for a 4th straight qualifying run, then I don't care

So, aren't these numbers going to be modified a bit when Curacao replaces Netherlands Antilles, and Sint Maarten joints the FIFA fray?

We'd then be on 36 eligible countries. I'd assume Curacao & Sint Maarten would start at 0 points because they have no record to run on, so, here's where it stands now.

I've bolded teams that are still alive in the Caribbean Cup, which does count as a Continental Qualifier for rankings purposes, and I'll start at the bottom and work my way up (since the bottom 8 wills start play first).

Preliminary Round: 8 Teams. Team (Rank/Pts).
    Pot B (36-33). Sint Maarten (T203/0), Curacao (T203/0), Anguilla (T203/0), Montserrat (T203/0).
    Pot A (32-29). US Virgin Islands (200/5), Aruba (199/7), Bahamas (194/13), Turks & Caicos Islands (T187/19).

Turks & Caicos Islands are actually tied with St. Lucia at 187/19.

    Round 1: 32 Teams: 28 + 4 Preliminary Round Winners.
    Pot D (25-28 + 4 Prelim winners). Prelim Winners 1-4; St. Lucia (T187/19), British Virgin Islanlds (175/41), Belize (174/54), Bermuda (T170/63).

Battle between St. Lucia and Turks & Caicos to see who avoids the Prelim round. Those at the bottom (St. Lucia down) would have to double their point totals to catch the BVI or anyone above them, so I'd say those three (BVI, Belize, Bermuda) are pretty safe from dropping. Still, there is a fairly healthy gap at of 22 points (for teams with only 60) to Pot C.

    Pot C (17-24). Dominican Republic (162/85), Nicaragua (161/86), Cayman Islands (158/92), Dominica (132/182), Antigua & Barbuda (131/183), Puerto Rico (T129/184), St. Kitts & Nevis (T129/184), Haiti (128/187).

A big gap from the bottom three here to Dominica, who are tightly bunched with the next five, who are in turn all very close to punching their way into the lower half of Pot B.

    Pot B (9-16). St. Vincent & the Grenadines (126/194), Grenada (125/195), Guatemala (122/214), Cuba (121/218), El Salvador (114/245), Suriname (113/261), Barbados (107/287), Trinidad & Tobago (106/302).

St. Vincent & Grenada could easily fall back into Pot C if they are not careful, especially if one of the Poc C teams still alive in Caribbean Cup makes into the Gold Cup, or even outperforms SVG or Grenada by a wide margin in the Cup. A little more distance to Guatemala & Cuba, then significant gaps at each step up of 15-20 points. Though I'll not Barbados are out of the Cup, which could hurt them.

Guyana seems the only team in the top 8 that has a serious risk of being caught anytime soon, and with Barbados out, T&T is the main contender to get that spot. Though if someone other than T&T/Jamaica wins the Cup, they'll shoot up.

    Pot A (1-8). Guyana (98/330), Canada (83/407), Jamaica (79/412), Costa Rica (66/490), Panama (59/515), Honduras (54/540), Mexico (28/786), USA (25/838).
    -----------------------------------------------------

I very much like the new system, even though I live in Columbus, Ohio and will therefore miss my Mexico/USA game every 4 years. Still, I think this new system gives everyone something to play for, a goal, and more chances to play. The old system just lumped the bottom half of CONCACAF together, and was unfair. This will be much better.

    Analysis

For those who want the Gold Cup every 4 years, and oppose the new qualifying format, I hope these changes are starting to change your mind a bit. The teams still winning games in Caribbean Cup have been shooting up the rankings (T&T, Guyana, Grenada, Cuba, Haiti, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Kitts & Nevis).

One should keep in mind that UEFA and Africa are also playing continental qualifiers right now. Still, if the goal of the new format is to get more games (in WCQ) and thus move CONCACAF teams up the rankings, here are some more numbers that indicate it may succeed.

I been tracking the CONCACAF rankings data in a couple areas: the number of teams ranked in each interval of 25; and the overall average ranking in the region. Here's the data for the 4 moths since the end of the WC.

Rank: #Teams Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov.
    1-25. Aug = 2, Sept = 1, Oct = 1, Nov = 1
    26-50. Aug = 1, Sept = 1, Oct = 1, Nov = 1
    51-75. Aug = 1, Sept = 3, Oct = 3, Nov = 3
    75-100. Aug = 4, Sept = 3, Oct = 3, Nov = 6.
    101-125. Aug = 4, Sept = 7, Oct = 7, Nov = 6.
    126-150. Aug = 6, Sept = 2, Oct = 6, Nov = 4.
    151-175. Aug = 6, Sept = 7, Oct = 7, Nov = 6.
    176-200. Aug = 9, Sept = 9, Oct = 5, Nov = 6.
    201+. Aug = 2, Sept = 2, Oct = 2, Nov = 2.

The top has been fairly stable. With USA & Mexico right on either side of 25, with Mexico falling just below and the USA remaining above. Honduras was in the top 50 right after the WC, but has fallen just below. They have been joined by Costa Rica and Panama as teams consistently in the 50-75 range this fall.

Once we get beyond 75 and start encountering Caribbean nations, the effects of the Caribbean Cup come into play. In November, we have more than 10 teams in the top 100 for the first time since the WC (11).The 6 from 75-100 is the most since the WC in that range. And the six more from 100-125 means that nearly half of CONCACF (17/35) is in the top 125, that's the most we've had in that range, and the most (12) in the 75-125 range. As I said before, the 5 teams above 75 (USA, Mex, Hond, CR, Panama) has been pretty constant, and they've not been involved in qualifying.

While the # of teams from 75-150 has remained pretty constant (15-16), the distribution is in the right direction. 76-100 has gone 4-3-3-6. And 76-125 has gone 8-10-10-12. So that is all positive.

The very bottom (200+) has been constant, as Anguilla and Montserrat have had zero points throughout. But there has been a bit of movement. We used to have 17-18 clubs below 150 (in Aug/Sept), but that figure has declined to 14 in Oct/Nov. The numbers 151-175 has been fairly constant 6-7-7-6, but the 175-200 club has declined thusly: 9-9-5-6. Clearly, the some teams are moving from 175-200 up to 150-175, whose number has remained constant because teams from there moving up into the top 125.

Anyway, the earth isn't moving, mainly because the top teams in our region aren't playing any qualifiers (and I really think Canada would be better served if they had to play more games), but the Caribbean nations have improved. We'll some the participants continuing to move up, but unfortunately, the games vs. Guadeloupe and Martinique do not count (because they aren't FIFA members, I believe).

As for the average rank for CONCACAF's 35 teams:
    Aug (137.000), Sept (137.143), Oct (131.943), Nov (128.571).

Those continental qualifiers are helping. The average rank is up almost 10 points.

    Whew!

    Sample Qualifying with current rankings:

    1. Qualifying Round. 6 clubs, 3 ties.
Pot 1: Turks and Caicos Islands, Bahamas, Aruba
Pot 2: US Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat

    2. Round 1: 8 Groups of 4. 32 Clubs.

Pot 1: USA, Mex, Hon, CR, Panama, T&T, Jamaica, Canada

Pot 2: Guyana, Grenada, Cuba, Haiti, Antigua & Barbuda, El Salvador, Barbados, Suriname.

Pot 3: St. Kitts & Nevis, Guatemala, Dominica, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Netherlands Antilles, Cayman Islands, Nicaragua.

Pot 4: Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Belize, British Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, QR W1, QR W2, QR W3.

Whichever group had Guatemala as a 3rd seed would be the most interesting. And one can see how many of the Pot 3 teams can feel that they could advance. And how Pot 2 teams could think they have a shot to get into the final 2 groups of 8. Basically, 3/4 of the region will be interested (and getting points) through round 1, and half through round 2. Now, half are out after matches.

FWIW, the WCQ draw will be held May 31st in Zurich and use the May 2011 FIFA rankings, I believe.

I find it odd they don't wait for Gold Cup to be played, but, whatever. At least we'll know who is going.

What do we have between now and May, as most teams are done with friendlies?

    Nov-Dec: End of Caribbean Cup.
    Jan: UNCAF Nations Cup
    ----------------------
    FIFA Calendar:
09 Feb: Fixed Date for friendlies
25-29 March: Fixed Date for official competitions

Now, there will be some friendlies in January, but the only matches where clubs will have to release the players are above. Of course, teams will still be "losing" points until the may rankings as old results slip off, but the chances for most teams to influence the Pots will limited to friendlies in Jan (non-FIFA date), Feb 09, and March 25-29.

I don't trust CONCACAF's motives behind having their own qualifying draw prior to the gold cup even though the actual world cup qualifying draw is in July in Brazil.

    http://www.v-brazil.com/world-cup/2014/wc-2014-qualifying-draw-will-be-in-rio-de-janeiro/

It's pretty obvious to me. Just like last time, Trinidad benefits greatly from being able to beat up on caribbean minnows in the caribbean cup (which counts extra in the rankings) to boost their ranking. Using seedings that precede the gold cup are a huge advantage because they aren't watered down by a poor gold cup performance. Trinidad would've been screwed last time around but Warner manipulated the seedings by using rankings 6 months out of date to get Trinidad into the B pot.

So just ask yourself, can there be any fair reason for CONCACAF holding their own draw two months prior to the actual draw in Brazil??? The whole thing smelllsssss

Yes, I agree completely. The draw should be after the continental championships themselves. What is someone from Pot B (or C) wins the thing? Or makes the final?

I will say this regarding T&T, the argument that they benefit from the Caribbean Cup is somewhat muted. They got a buy into the second round (so missed a chance to get more points). And every other Caribbean nation has the same chance to get points (and they have moved up).

Similarly, the Central American nations will have their shot in January. Of course, aside from Belize and Nicaragua, there aren't any real minnows, and 5 from Central America go to the GC anyway.

Personally, I'd like to see Gold Cup qualifying opened up more, with only the World Cup teams (or top 4 from WCQ) getting automatic bids. But that will probably be down the road a bit, when/if we get to the point where we can field 16 competitive teams instead of only 12.

I suspect the UNCAF Cup will change things. It could make for some very interesting groups in the 2nd group stage of qualifying if Cuba actually makes top 4. You could have one group with Cuba, Panama, Grenada, and St. Kitts while another group could be Mexico, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago, and El Salvador.

Guatemala really needs to get their act together.

I suspect if you move Guatemala up to Pot 2 (for St. Kitts & Nevis) the top 2 pots will be set.
However, they are 50 points or so behind right now.

Guatemala is grouped with Honduras and Costa Rica in UNCAF. Big chance to climb the rankings now or never.

New FIFA rankings out, pretty much status quo for CONCACAF in general, but with some big movers. Again, looking the rankings, one can see the positive effect of the Caribbean Cup, and in the larger sense, the wisdom in playing MORE games (Gold Cup every two years, new qualifying format).

    Individually:

    Big moves up: Cuba +32 (62nd), Jamaica +24 (58th), Haiti +11 (90th), Antigua & Barbuda +9 (106th), Guatemala +8 (118th), Suriname +6 (115th), United States +6 (18th).

    Big moves down: Guyana -23 (109), Trinidad & Tobago -11 (89th), Barbados -11 (131st), Costa Rica -6 (69th), Dominican Republic -6 (168th).

Collectively, the collective average/mean CONCACAF ranking for December is 127.400, down (improvement) over 1 point from November. In fact, here is the trend from post World Cup, starting in August: 137.000, 137.143, 131.943, 128.571, 127.400. Again, an improvement of nearly 10 pts as a group, coinciding with the Caribbean Cup. Again, the mid/lower level nations playing games helps the region's ranking, plain and simple.

    Total picture, 35 CONCACAF teams by 50 team quadrants: 1-50 (2), 51-100 (9), 101-150 (10), 151-200 (12), 201+ (2).

    By 25 Team Quadrants: 1-25 (1), 26-50 (1), 51-75 (5), 76-100 (4), 101-125 (6), 126-150 (4), 151-175 (6), 176-200 (6), 200+ (2).

When one looks at groupings (and I like to group in 25 or 50 ranks), not much changed, but we are still at the high water mark. Still two teams in the top 50, with the USA in the top 25 (18th) and Mexico just outside it at 27. Honduras was in the top 50 after the WC, but we haven't had another top 50 team since.

However, we have more teams in the 51-75 range (5) than at any time since the WC. Our progression in this range since August: 1, 3, 3, 3, 5. The teams are Jamaica (58), Hondruas (59), Cuba (62), Panama (64), Costa Rica (69). Hopefully, with the Central American Cup in January, we'll get some more movement into the top 50 in the next two months.

We still have 9 teams in the 51-100 range, equaling our high water mark of November 2010, but now more of them are 51-75, instead of 76-100. Both Jamaica & Cuba made the move up in this fashion. Guyana slipped out of the top 100, but Haiti moved up, accounting for the fact we still have 9 teams in the 51-100 range.

From there on down the big picture remained the same, matching the good marks for November: 101-150 = 10 teams (with 6 from 101-125 and 4 from 126-150); 151-175 = 12 teams (with 6 teams on either side of 175). And Anguilla and Montserrat still with no points at 203.

Individually: Guatemala moved up a quadrant (126th to 118th) and Barbados slipped on (120th to 131st). Everyone else remained in the same quadrant.
