Thanks to beineke for this catch. The Mexican federation's web site now lists American-born Christopher Michael Cortez. It doesn't specify a team, but generally this wouldn't happen before someone is listed with a club in some way. This fellow is a big 1988 who played at Cal: http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/cortez_chris00.html He would have been a junior this year. However, he's not on the 2008 roster: http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/cal-m-soccer-mtt.html
He's a really good player. Got his scholarship from Cal pulled after it was discovered that he was playing with Chivas U19 team. He featured a couple of times for Chivas USA's reserves but nothing came of it.
Just curious: Why would they pull his scholarship for playing for CDUSA U-19? The Farfans and (I believe) Eric Avila played for them also.
Good question...I would like to know as well....unless of course he played with the reserves as well (being the reserves is a "pro team" so to speak)
Well that's what I meant...if he played with the reserves before he lost his scholarship that would cause him to lose it.
Something about him playing with Cal and Chivas USA at the same time. Guess it's against NCAA rules? This thread should explain a little more... https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=605999&highlight=chris+cortez
So did he get kicked out because its illegal for a college kid to play on a youth MLS(pro) team or was it because the coach didn't like that he didn't tell him?
If I understand it correctly, he was playing coming down south from Cal to play for Chivas USA while Cal was in season. According to the second post on the thread I directed you to, it is illegal for a player to player on his college team and an outside team at the same time (kind of like HS). I'm sure Grimes didnt appreciate Chris putting the team in jeopardy so his scholarship was consequently pulled. This is how I inturpretted the situation. Could be way off though.
The Mexican fed now lists Cortez as being with Altamira FC/Estudiantes de Altamira in the second division. Haven't been able to confirm on the club site. http://www.altamirafc.com.mx/
Surprise! This kid is playing in MLS: After being officially signed by Chivas on Sunday, the striker made his professional debut just hours later and went 21 minutes in the Rojiblancos’ 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/05/16/cortezs-debut-chivas-long-time-making
He was released by CUSA. http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/soccer/post/_/id/14833/chivas-usa-goats-release-cortez
Cortez is one of three forwards who will be trialing with swedish second tier Superettan club GAIS later this week. The club is coached by maybe-american-to-some-extent Benjamin Westman and will begin their preseason on thursday. A bit surprising that they are looking at more forwards as they already signed two quite well established Superettan strikers this winter, but without knowing anything else about him Cortez certainly seem to fit in the same mold as those other two signings sizewise at least.
Cortez is still in Sweden and will now apparently trial with Falkenbergs FF next week according to fansite SvenskaFans.
Just to further confirm things, GAIS posted a report today on the varying fates of their trialists and Cortez is one of the players who was not offered a contract.
Cortez is still in Sweden and this week he will be trialing with Örgryte IS, who were just promoted to Superettan at the end of last season.
He is now in Thailand with Chonburi FC in the top tier: @chonburi_shark sign American striker @c_cortez88 to improve their attack.#ThaiLeague pic.twitter.com/0QJny4d9iG— ThaiLeague (@thaileague) December 28, 2018
Scored recently: Hard fought point on the road. Happy to get my first goal and hopefully many more to come! #chopcity #megs #dontwatchtheeyes pic.twitter.com/Ew2locaS3m— Chris Cortez (@c_cortez88) April 6, 2019
I was wondering why he wasn't showing up in Chonburi rosters, but it looks like he is out on loan: We signed two foreign players in the recent window and neither of them are in the squad for the start of the season. Chris Cortez is out on loan at Ayutthya Utd and Mawouna Avemor's ITC didn't come through in time. This happens quite often.— chonburi_fc (@chonburi_fc) February 22, 2019
Now with FC Helsingør in Denmark's 3rd tier: https://fchelsingor.dk/en/2019/08/08/fc-helsingor-signs-american-goal-getter/ @TheFalseNine -- Let's update title, please: Chris Cortez at FC Helsingør (Denmark)
