My take on these players are: Never saw V.Garza (3xMVPs can't hurt) Molano looked good vs NI Navas Cobo I really like but needs to get into games to stay sharp Reserve games, oh right. Zahavi is subbing with Macabbi Haifa, good pedigree so far. Your fullbacks are just a list. College guys just aren't getting challenged like the Pros are, Sarkodie needs better ball skills and 90 % his games vs. Western Michigan, Cleveland State and Oakland really aren't all that challenging. What I've scene of E.Orozco and White are nice but not overly impressive at the international level. Never saw Veeder. Don't get me started on Polak. He is this generations J.Valentin. (Z.Valentin is good though). G.Garza is the only one of any quality for us to really go 3-4 deep at every position like we can at forward and MF. I still think we need athletic outside backs who can get forward. So if any of our deep pool of forwards or MF can play defense and get forward, I think that's where we're still pretty weak.
Good post. I also noticed Sarkodie's ball skills (or lack, thereof). Athletic, skillful outside backs who can get forward are hard to find (for the U.S., at least). However, converting Fs and MFs to outside backs takes some time.
Hopefully there will be another camp in Europe later in the fall or in the winter. The lessened travel time and the fact that a European-based U20 tournament will likely garner more respect than a Peruvian one from a European club (rightly or wrongly) should make Wood's participation much easier to swallow from 1860's perspective.
Wood scored in their latest U19 win against table leader FCK. He also scored in their first game of the season too. He's played 383 mins of 450. Stats here.
I've never heard of this kid but wow, he's in his 5th in Germany year now?!? I hope he continues to develop. And I hope he's going to school in case it doesn't work out.
I think I posted this a few pages back. He is really supposed to be on the U19 team if he were just the average player. However, club management see him as a rising star (one of several among Ziereis, Volland, Hofstetter, etc.) and have skipped him over the U19 team and signed him for the U23. Now, here is where roster shuffling comes in. As with any professional club, you may bring up players from your U23 or U19 team to fill in voids in your professional roster. While Bobby is on the U23 squad officially, due to his age he is eligible to play on the U19s. Both the U19s and U23s are limited in the number of "out of age" players they can have....these are players older than the age cutoff. I think the limit is 3. So, while players are being shuffled around from the pro team, U23 team and U19 team, where Bobby ends up any given week will depend on the movement and restrictions of other players being "platooned" up and down. Make sense? In short, he needs playing time and they want him to get matches in. At the U23 team he would be getting less. Cooper, when he gets fit again, will likely see his first few games with the U23 squad which will eventually push one of the younger U23s to the U19s to make room. Then when Cooper goes back up everyone will re-adjust. Hope that helps.
Well, one of 1860's forward prospects, Kevin Volland, made his debut(?) for the first team over the weekend. He had played a couple of matches with the U19s this season and then was with the U23s. LoewenBoy's previous post about players shifting up and down depending on availability proved to be very apt. Sure enough, Wood made his first appearance for 1860 Munich II yesterday.
Yes, Wood went in for Ziereis in the 59th min. In the current pecking order it seems Volland and Ziereis have a leg up on Wood at the moment. Both are German youth internationals so that might also help. Wood should get some decent playing time across the U19s and U23s this season. He is a good young prospect and, given 1860 financial woes, they will be certain to try to sign him to a pro contract so they can sell him later. To do that they will need to get him playing time AND get his name out there at both the U23 and pro level. As I said earlier, I would expect to see him in the first team in the next 18 months if not earlier.
The report is here. I can translate later. He scored on a header from a free kicks. Sounds like it was a nice goal. Could have been 3-0 a few minutes later but 1860 missed the net just wide. A good showing....played 85 mins and scored a goal. Not bad for a day's work.
He can go to college AFTER it doesn't work out. Not dedicating yourself to German soccer will definately increase the liklihood it won't work out.
He is in school. But when you are already in a good German youth academy (one of the best if not the best), you are 17 and are playing on the U19 and U23 sides and are 18 months from a pro contract, I am thinking this kid has nothing to worry about. If he stays healthy and keeps his head on straight he will have a bright career ahead of him,. And when he is done he can come back to the MLS and play for the Galaxy when Donovan retires and becomes their coach.
Wood to travel with first team to Poland... Bobby Wood has been named to the travelling team that is headed to Krakau, Poland on Saturday for a test match against the local first division club. Many of the regulars are either on international duty or taking a break to nurse slight injuries during the break, so Wood is fillin in. While he will likely not start, it is possible he may see an entire half of playing time depending on how many players are brought along and how many subs allowed. Typically, friendlies have unlimited subs but are usually kept between 6-8 additional players. Many of the starters are first team reserves whicht he coach wants to see get match practice. Luckily for Wood most, if not all of the normal staring first teamers won't be travelling with.

Wood First Team Play in Poland Well, Bobby got more than a "trot out" in Poland today. He played a full 45 for the starting striker Bennie Lauth. The game was a chance for several bench warmers and young starlets to show what they can do. I am not surprised they lost 1-2 as it is hard to play with a group of guys who basically have not played before. By all accounts the manager was satisfied with everyone's performance. The coach said of Bobby, "Bobby Wood had to fly in to help us out on account of all of our personnel problems (sickness, injuries, international duties of other players). He came into his first professional game having never trained with us before." That's a pretty nice observation by the coach for a young player. this may bode well for him. If any of the strikers get injured he may very well see some training time with the first team....at 17. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Re: Wood First Team Play in Poland He'll be 18 in November. His birth year on ussoccer.com is incorrect; he was born in 1992, not 1991.
He scored again while starting for 1860 Munich II. Youngest player on theam but is a starter and scores.
