I think they set up for three years with this format to begin with, right? So, next year will be the third.

In case you don't know, CONCACAF already made a change, with the top club from Panama going to the Group Stage and switching with the top club from El Salvador who now has to start in the Qualifying Round.

When did they do that? Is that for next year? Was there an announcement?

just wanted to give this thread a bump since the competition has started up again. Thanks again for all the hard work done to keep the coefficients the past 2 years!

Hi, I've been keeping an excel file 2 with these coefficients, And when I used your multipliers(The only different multiplier we had was the number of points awarded when qualifying to the 2nd stage) I found a difference for the mexico number in 2008-2009. This is because during the final that year, 2 mexican teams played each other and they tied in the 2nd leg.

Acording to your data you counted that tie once, but I think it should be counted twice since both teams got a tie even if they are from the same country.

That way the number for mexico that year would be 19.500 not 19.250

    Hope it helped

You're absolutely right. I don't think that's the reason for the error, because I know I took that into account when I was calculating. Probably just a typo. But thanks for the heads up!

I'm not seeing the Galaxy on there.

Also, how are you counting the home and away series? As separate, individual games? I don't know if that's an accurate representation because the winning team in the first leg may play for a tie or even a small loss in the second leg and it still results as a "victory" for them.

For example, PRI and Marathon this last round. I didn't watch the games, but my guess is that they were playing conservatively and that may have resulted in their loss. But it didn't matter because they had to lose by a large margin to be eliminated.

I'm assuming ArsenalMetro is counting two leg series as two games. UEFA counts two leg series as two games. I guess if UEFA clubs want to maximize their coefficient they should play to win the second leg even if they won the first leg by 5 goals.

Yeah, I know it's the way they do it. But it ends up punishing a team for being too good. And thus the coefficients that are determined aren't as accurate.

I'll post the stuff I come up with later on in the tournament. It seems to be what CONCACAF is using and is simply based on whether or not a team advances. I'm not sayinig that I think this is more accurate, but I'm following it because it's what they're using.

I posted the past years results earlier in the thread.

The Galaxy shouldn't be on there. Teams don't pick up any points unless they make the group stages.

And yes, every match, even if it is part of a home-and-away, counts separately. Having a different result for one match as compared to the overall tie can only shift the number of points earned by a country by 1, at the most, so it really isn't a huge deal.

I wholeheartedly disagree. If a team wins both matches, they get 2 points (+4 bonus for making the group stages) for their country. If they're that good, then they deserve extra. If there's a team that bunkers for a full match, hoping for a 1, 2-goal loss or a draw, then they don't deserve full points. Giving points for simply the winner of the tie would be a misrepresentation of what happened on the field.

Cruz Azul is just going to increase their lead.

Honduras is looking good as the second best league in concacaf, which surprises me, good for them, let see if marathon can score more points for them.

Question that I am pretty sure I know the answer to, Toronto FC points go to Canada and not to the USA/MLS correct, I am sure this is the case I just want to confirm, sorry for the stupid question.

That is correct. Any Canadian team represents the CSA. Canadian teams are not eligible to qualify for the CCL via play in MLS (or USL/NASL/D2, any of that.) Teams represent national federations, not leagues.

As was confirmed, yeah, Toronto counts for Canada. Somewhat related, Caribbean teams count for the CFU, but I also have individual country totals hidden away on my spreadsheet.

Is your spread sheet simple or complex, I created one for Copa Libertadores this weekend and it is a mess, I got V-lookups going all over. I think I made it way more complex that it should be but oh well. :p

Or not ... they've drawn the 2 most difficult MLS teams to beat at home.

Though I guess making the tournament every year and getting through to the quarters is going to keep you near the top, if many teams don't get there every year.

Notes before the new coefficients are posted tomorrow:

    - The United States coefficient for this edition is already equal to that of 2008-09. Every positive result for the rest of this tournament makes it that much better than the first year.
    - With a Seattle win tomorrow, the US would jump past Panama into 5th place.

Didn't TFC get a draw last year in the prelims?

If you can't make the groups, you don't deserve anything. And since this is based on the UEFA coefficient, and they only give minimal points to those eliminated in qualifying rounds, I decided to do away with them altogether.

Toronto's draw is the reason Canada has a 0.500 coefficient for last season. I didn't miss it. ;)
