As the Scarecrow said in the Wizard of Oz: "If I only had a brain."
Well, it appears Miami FC got the scarecrows wish and what did they do with their brain?!?
the Strikers are reborn. and I say, "Welcome back!"
We all need somebody to love! We all want somebody to love!

We have our beloved Tampa Bay Rowdies! And we know what to do with the Strikers... and the closest it will ever come to love leaves it looking like a bad marriage! So WELCOME BACK!

I haven't been keeping up with the news what with World Cup anticipation so I googled this news:

    http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=4025373

Sounds good. Pretty much what we were all expecting to happen; good to hear it is official.

No mention of the Lockhart Stadium situation in the news, though. I suppose I shall have to catch up with the gossip over at the Miami FC forum. If Traffic can get control over Lockhart Stadium and the nearby baseball field and convert it to a year round soccer complex, they've got a winner. Last I heard they were waiting for approval (and competing with some other proposals for use of the site).

Traffic really need to hire some professional marketing and ticket selling people, and get the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers name out there. Simply rebranding isn't enough; they need to put some real effort and money into it, which they have never done for Miami FC.

1)Traffic is too cheap to hire REAL employees that know whats up.
2)South Florida Strikers is SOOOOOO much more likely no matter how much it hurts me to say it.

Yeah South Florida Strikers is probably more likely at this point, but they were surveying fans at the USOC game this past Tuesday(and presumably will continue to do so) about the name, so hopefully the fans speak up and make the decision for them.

"Fort Lauderdale" is a big part of the Strikers ethos MFC wants to tap into. "Strikers" is such a generic name, but "Fort Lauderdale Strikers" stands alone. That's whole package. "South Florida Strikers" could be anything... a youth team, bowling club, or the currently existing women's team:

But the Fort Lauderdale Strikers evoke professional, top class soccer. Even if it isn't, which MFC certainly is not, it puts a good image out there and will get people to acknowledge the team and come out to games.

Then again, Tampa doesn't really have the Tampa Bay Rowdies back, you have FC Tampa Bay. Perhaps the look alone and hint of past glory would be enough to rekindle support down here. Only time will tell...

Once the lawsuit is settled, I believe that the FC Tampa Bay will add ''Rowdies'' to their name

Unless brentgoulet is referring to some inside knowledge he has that we don't have, he's just referring to the ongoing lawsuit/negotiations that we assume are still ongoing behind the scenes.

In other words at some point the trademark squatters in Texas will realize that there isn't a huge pot of gold in selling old Tampa Bay Rowdies retro gear, and they'll settle for some kind of negotiated settlement with "FC Tampa Bay Rowdies" to give up their rights to sell merchandise with the Tampa Bay Rowdies name. When this happens, logically there is no more need for the "FC Tampa Bay" nonsense.

BTW, people, if you are buying retro Rowdies gear, make damn sure that you are not buying from Classic Sports Logos or from anyone who is reselling their gear. This is one case where you most definitely want to be buying from so-called "pirates". Do not put any money into Classic Sports Logos' pockets; it will only encourage them to be even bigger punks than they have already proven themselves to be.

Thanks for some of the background on this. To be honest, I don't/didn't know anything about this. Are CSL the perps we need to be on guard for?

As far as I remember, the person from that Texas company that sold the ''Rowdies brand'' to the Tampa Bay Group had - apparently - no longer permission to do that.

Yes it is Classic Sports Logos; just don't buy from them while this dispute is ongoing. You don't want to give them financial reasons to hang on to their alleged Tampa Bay Rowdies merchandising rights.

Trademark is a bit of a hazy issue (IANAL); it seems to be 90% bluff and bluster. This problem could have been avoided if the Rowdies IP (intellectual property) had been kept current and defended circa 1994-2008. Put on a few Rowdies "kick in the grass" youth soccer camps; send cease and desist letters to people selling Rowdies gear without permission, etc. Keep the legal claim to the IP fresh. It would not have cost much to do this but it was not done.

Frankly I don't like the idea that someone can simply steal a historical legacy by filing papers, when he has no intention of actually reviving the team. Making money off of a legacy he has done nothing to create or perpetuate, etc.

Yes that is my memory also. It still makes no sense to me: how can he have sold it if it was not his to sell? Either he should give the money back to the Rowdies, or he in fact did have legal right to sell and CSL needs to take a hike. One way or another someone isn't being truthful.

    My point exactly.

And I'm not entirely sure about the legality, either, but IANAL (I am not a lawyer).

It's an abbreviation I've seen in places like Slashdot, but not here. Hence the explanation. :)
