I reckon 4 Brazilian teams will be in the quarterfinals, and 1 will make the final. Estudiantes and Velez get the weakest teams ;)

    Re: Copa Libertadores 2010 discussion - part 2 [R]

There's a bit of a parallel between this year and last year if you look at both tournament's round of 16.

In 2009, there were 5 Brazilians, ditto for 2010.

In both 2009 and 2010, the #1 team in the round of 16 is Brazilian (Gremio in 2009, Corinthians this year).

In both 2009 and 2010, there were 2 Brazilians on one side of the bracket and 3 on the other, and in both years, the 2 Brazilians who were on the same side of the bracket met in the round of 16, thus ensuring that there would be no more than 4 Brazilians in the quarterfinals.

And that is precisely what happened.

Sport (6) was eliminated by Palmeiras (11). The quarterfinals then saw 4 Brazilians and two were matched vs. each other (Cruzeiro vs. SPFC), thus ensuring at most 3 Brazilians in the semifinals and therefore a possible all-Brazilian final. Palmeiras was eliminated, so of the 5 Brazilians in the round of 16, only 2 survived to the semifinals - Gremio and Cruzeiro. Gremio, while ranked higher, fell to Cruzeiro.

    In 2010:

Corinthians (1) faces Flamengo (16). So that's one Brazilian in the quartefinals. In the other side of the bracket, we may have 3 other Brazilians - assuming SPFC (2), Cruzeiro (10), and Internacional (6) get past Universitario (15), Nacional (7), and Banfield (11).

If the Brazilians all advance, we then have 4 Brazilians in the quarterfinals:

    Corinthians or Flamengo
    SPFC
    Cruzeiro
    Internacional

And JUST LIKE in 2009, we would have another all-Brazilian matchup in the quarterfinals, and it would AGAIN be SPFC vs. Cruzeiro. If Corinthians or Flamengo and Internacional reach the semifinals, THEN we would have 3 Brazilians in the semifinals and the possibility of an all Brazilian final.

There are always a number of upsets, when lower-seeded teams eliminated higher seeds. Case in point are Estudantes da Prata ousting last year's #3 in the semifinals and Cruzeiro, #5, defeating the best team from the group stage, Gremio, in Gremio's stadium.

So Corinthians fans, don't get all excited - you may have to put up with Flamengo advancing from the round of 16. :D

Mi pronóstico para 4tos de final:

    Corinthians(BRA)-Univ.de Chile(CHI)
    Vélez Sarsfield(ARG)-Once Caldas(COL)
    Sao Paulo(BRA)-Cruzeiro(BRA)
    Estudiantes(ARG)-Internacional(BRA)

No he visto jugar a Guadalajara este año, mi única duda es Vélez o Guadalajara.

Guadalajara won't have its mundialistas available. So, they will be a depleted team for both the Mexican league and Copa Libertadores.

    Velez got it easy.

First of all, get the name right. It’s São PAULO. SÃO PAULO!!!!! Not this “sao paolo” Italianized nonsense.

    But “(ARG)?” The hell?

São Paulo is a Brazilian club. O SÃO PAULO É UM TIME BRASILEIRO!!!!!

    Velez has a huge advantage.

The Mexican football federation took the best Mexican players away from their teams before the season is over, so that they can practice a few more days together with the national team.

I guess Guadalajara is in trouble, as they are taking away their best Mexican players, and they don't have any foreign players to fall back on. On the other hand, San Luis will be fine, because they depend more on foreign players, and because their Mexican players are not on the national team roster.

So, while traveling to play in Mexico is always tough, I think San Luis will be a tougher opponent for Estudiantes than Guadalajara will be for Velez.

And they have 3 or some injured apart from the ones who are in NT duty...

this weekend they will play with nothing but youngsters from the U-20 and U17 squad

    Atrocious! LOL

Velez should have ZERO problems...if a team like Indios beats a dismantled Chivas...Velez should def do some major damage.

According to something I just read, the CONMEBOL allows teams qualified for the next round to get 3 players from other teams from the same league as reinforcement.

This, only because it's a World Cup year and several teams may be depleted for the latter stages. So any team losing players to their NT can apply.

Now, it's up to each national federation to stamps the loans. Players who have already participated (or will participate) in the Copa cannot be selected.

    See:

    http://www.exonline.com.mx/diario/n.../conmebol_permite_tener_tres_refuerzos/930845

    ===

This can be news not only for Chivas, but also for Estudiantes and Vélez, since Clemente, Verón and Sosa (Estudiantes) and Otamendi and Papa (Vélez) are in the short-list for the NT and can be called at any time by Maradona.

The Conmebol should put a stop to that. It severly underminds this Tournament. Either you give this tournament priority or get out. Wolverhampton in the Prem league got punished for fielding 11 reserves against Manchester united this year..Can someone name a country in the world that calls their players this early? Argentina, Brasil, Italy and the rest of the world are not going to call Messi, Kaka..etc..etc.. from the Champions league next week!! Why does mexico need their players this early? It doesn't make sense.

Well, if it serves of any consolation, Chivas, los Pumas, el América, Cruz Azul, Atlas and Morelia have been playing the Mexican League without their NT players for the last weeks.

They're not disrespecting the Copa, they're just crippled by their federation in all senses because they want to do well in the WC.

The only disrespect was Monterrey sending B players in the first game against Sao Paulo, and that was because they needed to win in their local tournament and felt even with their best team they had no chance to beat SP in Brazil.

Otherwise, Morelia and Monterrey sent young players to the last games, but they were eliminated already. Out of 14 games played by Mexican teams, they have fielded their best teams in 11.

They expected to win as locals, though. I must say the tie of Once Caldas in Monterrey, when the Mexican team was playing in all its power as League Leader at home, was a great achievement by the Colombians. A superb game, and I'd further add that, after that tie, the whole mentality of Morelia and Monterrey changed from a "we can go far in this tournament" to a "let's hope we can squeeze by to the next round."

Once Caldas was magnificent that day.

So, mexican teams are INVITED to the tournament and don't send their best players (or teams, for the matter).
    Why invite them?

Its no always been like that...

theres been instances where they have done it and gone through the group stage...

if its not America, Chivas some of these other teams dont know how to play these kinds of tournaments.

Cruz Azul. The only Mexican team to make it to the final. And they lost it in the penalties.

As far as I know, North Korea and South Africa already have the NT team working together. (In South Africa's case, with the exception of their European based players).

I'm not sure about any others.

Actually the travel should be more of a problem for Estudiantes than for Velez, as Estudiantes is still competing in both tournaments and they are going all out to win Argentina's Apertura. Velez already threw in the towel in the Apertura, so they are more likely to rest their top players for La Copa.
