In Sudamericana 2004, São Paulo and River's players started a fight. Luís fabiano got a red card and said to the reporters:

"I can help my friends on a penalty shotout or in a fight. I prefer to help in a fight"

    LOL

    Come back, fabuloso.

I picked Leandro Diaz as my goat of the week, for his role in the brawl, but we have to keep things in perspective. The fact is that Diaz is a 17 year old hothead kid who's just made his first division debut.

I think he was obviously nervous and frustrated over his team's inability to get a goal, and he is responsible for starting the trouble. But I also think the older veterans from both teams who have more experience should have pulled him aside and calmed him down, instead of getting the situation to escalate into the brawl that ensued.

I didn't know he was 17 he certainly looks older.

Anyway, I was looking at the brawl again and it's actually funny how after what he does to Fernandez he gets slapped by defender Galliquio (who btw is a mean looking 32 year old nicknamed "Tyson") , and when he realizes this he looks a bit intimidated.

then when the worst part of the fight starts and with Galliquio on the frontline, he tries to get a shot in but it looks more like he's trying to scratch his face than to actually land a punch.

The fact that he's 17 explains a lot now.

I was surprised at the level that Flamengo displayed in Santiago. Definitely under the median level of your typical Brasilian team. Catolica toyed with them all second half.

I did the simulator, with just one week left, and I got some pretty nice matchups:

    1 Corinthians vs 16 Universitario
    2 U de Chile vs 15 Flamengo
3 Sao Paulo vs 14 San Luis
    4 Estudiantes vs 13 Guadalajara
5 Velez vs 12 Once Caldas
    6 Libertad vs 11 Banfield
    7 Nacional vs 10 Cruzeiro
8 Internacional vs 9 Alianza Lima

    Was watching Estudiantes-Alianza...

Now can anybody tell me how this fat ass Montaño can be playing in a Libertadores game?

Are you telling me that a team like Alianza de Lima doesn't have an 18/19 year old in their youth team that could be given an opportunity instead of this freakin hippo?

    Come on!

    Francamente da verguenza ajena, che!

Que tal ambiente del Parque Central de Montevideo! Para meterle miedo a los Mexicanos.

Cantos, bengalas, cohetes, banderas. Que Champions League ni que Champions League, this is where football is passion.

    2-0 y adiós al Monarcas.

SPFC 1, Once Caldas 0. It's the first time my team ever defeated Once Caldas. Apparently this Colombian team still has the potential to be a Greece-like darkhorse. Just ask the remnants from Boca Juniores' 2004 squad.

I didn't watch the match, but the post-game reports all state my team struggled. And Once hit the woodwork.

Well, at least SPFC finishes first in the group, and unless Corinthians collapses in its final game (not that I'd mind), SPFC will be seeded #2 in the round of 16.

It seems Banfield and Nacional could meet once again in the round of 16.

By the way in case you don't remember, after last year's incident with Benitez and San Lorenzo FIFA disallowed transfers outside the transfer period, meaning that teams won't be able to sign new players until the transfer window opens, before the semi-finals, also according CONMEBOL regulations, teams can't sign players that took part on this year's Libertadores for other teams.

The Benitez-San Lorenzo situation was the following, in the Sudamericana last year was that San Lorenzo reached an agreeement with FC Porto for Benitez so he'd take part only on Sudamericana matches, like CONMEBOL had allowed it in the past, but FIFA stopped the transfer claiming that international transfers out of period were disallowed, ultimately it was the same with happened with Sosa and Estudiantes towards the Club's World Cup, neither of those players was allowed to take part on the league until the transfer window opened.
