When Freddy Adu signed with benfica, would you have considered his european signing a success if you knew that two and half years on he would be getting occassional playing time at a team that plays on the level of a good mexican team? Somehow, I don't think that's what Freddy and his [supporters] were counting on.

His bank account thinks it's a success.

And he's not going to be on strike.

Look at Torres, his level of play is just fine, maybe not a fit for USA right now under BB but he is just at the level of many of the great internal players that start for mexico, who might I add IMO will do better then USA this world cup with the showing of some new talent up front, in 'El Chicharito' Hernandez.

Say what you will about mexico, there is a reason why they play with more confidence and swagger then the US, and dont buckle down to teams just because they are higher on the FIFA world Ranking.

And on Adu, its better he gets this harsh lesson on europe and football, and how one can sit on the bench at 20, and once be considered the next big thing at 14. He will grow, learn from this, and be happy this all happened to him early rather then later in his career.

Remember folks, he IS still only 20.....

And call me a fanboy, it doesnt offend me. I just have my facts straight, and ACTUALLY follow a team, get to know the politics behind moves, player sittings, guys on the field, their backgrounds, and dont talk out of my ass. If knowing your shit about a player you like and about the situation he is in is called being a 'fanboy' then hell, i am a fanboy to MANY MANY players out there.

^^They are a different team since we last beat them. Go look up el Chicarito Hernandez. He is going to be bigger then Vela and Dos Santos. PSV is looking to buy him from Chivas.

Your posts are confusing. You're arguing Freddy is failing because that's what you think others (but not you) would have thought a couple years ago? To me it sounds like you're tying yourself in knots to get across some sort of put down. What do YOU think?

    and yet lose to us

    Like Spain?

IMO, Mexico can thank the US for shocking their federation out of complacency...the national team and players were fat and happy as CONCACAF kings until we started beating them.

    That is the truth.

We'll see how Mexico do, but I can almost gaurauntee that they will do better overall then the US.

They have scary talent in Chicharito, match him up front with Vela and Dos Santos....yikes.

    1. I'm not putting down the mexican league, It is what it is... A good league in the Americas that is still a far way down from the world's top 5 leagues.

    2. The Mexican team folds like a deck of cards. The "swagger" evaporates in the face of the smallest amount of adversity. Mostly a team of big talkers but ************** when it comes down to it.

    3. I would have loved it if fanboys like yourself haven't been touting Freddy Adu and comparing him favorably to Messi and Ronaldo a few short years ago. Then we could be here and have a "gringo torres" type discussion and feel pretty good about him. But we can't because you insisted that he was as good as Messi just two or three years ago, when clearly he wasn't and isn't.

Find where ever I said he was as good as cristiano ronaldo or Messi. Again people talking out the A-hole. He is not comparable to those stars because of the benefit they had of going through good youth systems and good coaches.

You are just trying to throw me in with teh mindless posters that would make crazy claims with no soccer knowledge. You and I know I am better then that. ;)

And we'll see where Mexico goes as far as this summers WC goes, my money is on them to go farther then USA. This is based on the recent soccer they have been playing compared to USA. Its attractive, its fast, its smart, its techincal, and to finish up front they have aforward that is talented not only with the ball at his feet, but at his head, and can score and shoot with both feet with great accuracy, and has proven his value scoring 3 great goals in the last 2 games, and scoring tons of goals for Chivas in all competitions, including the Copa Libertadores which is right below the euro champ league.

Look, I'm pretty new to this thread, you were on here for a while talking about how terrific it is for Freddy at the moment, so although you should answer first, I will do the courtesy.

Freddy is not doing well. It does matter whether even if a young player's career is on the upswing or downswing. It does matter that his career in Europe, which began with the hope that he'd be spending his first year breaking in at Benfica (which is why, including me, many of us saw Benfica as a better option that Man U or some other huger club). OK fine, it didn't work out so well. but going from DNPs at Benfica, to DNPs at Monaco, to DNPs at Belenensense, to a bright start then DNPs at Aris is not a good thing.

Now I realize that we all need to give Aris a little more time to see how it goes, but successive DNPs is not good.

Let's say he starts to do well at Aris, you don't think he's got a bigger hurdle to overcome to get signed to a bigger club in a bigger league because he was so unsuccessful at monaco and belenense? Of course it is. And it's a shame, because I think Freddy is a good player, but things have not gone right for him in europe.

Now go ahead and answer the question.

Touche, putting you into that pot is unfair since I don't exactly recall if you were one of them. But the idea that it's going swimmingly and according to plan for freddy is a pipe dream.

As for mexico, we'll see. They are in a tougher grouping than they have been in the last two or three WCs, (though still, not all that tough).

I've answered the question at least twice. Try reading the posts.

    https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=20156870&postcount=340

You think 3 DNPs is a huge deal. If it continues, then there's no possibility of his going to SA. But other than that, it's not a huge deal. I've said why. Given your "analysis," I suggest you grieve Freddy's career and forget about it. ;) Because it seems like you think you're successfully gloating.

Somehow, reading the posts on here, I get the impression that Freddy should go off to junior college for a few years and come back when he's 23.

He's played what? 200 minutes for Aris and scored 2 and assisted 1. No goals were scored against his team on his watch, and people were oohing and aahing about how well he defending and how he couldn't be knocked off the ball.

It's strange....Maybe Freddy skipped a few steps moving up the ladder, but if he was playing and scoring, why wouldn't a coach keep him on the field?

Yes, thats what many think, but thats not the FULL truth.

He WAS doing good, until had one terrible half, and had a good option to try out in Meriem. I guess it was bad luck that when he finally started to do bad/be fatigued is when Meriem was finally ready to come back after breaking his nose and put in serious work on the field. Adu gave him that chance, and Meriem so far has been making the best of it, and has won over the coach so far at that position. Not to mention his resume and such that puts him already on paper over adu. I hope Adu works his ass and comes back this wednesday and proves himself out there. I am sure he will play then.

Back to square 1....the idea was that Freddy needs a coach who believes in him enough to play him regularly. To see something in him worth working on, so that he isn't dropped for a month (and counting) anytime he plays a less than great 45 minutes.

Hey guys. Don't forget how tight the standings are (or were, before this strong win). When you're hanging on to 5th place for dear life, you don't start the promising youngster over the proven vet.

Cuper has a lot of pressure to finish well in Greece. He has a little cushion now, a little breathing room on the table, so I would imagine it's safer to use Adu more in the mind of the coach.

Also, Cuper seems to work on a 12-18 month plan with players. Slowly integrate the player, and give them a chance for successes. Freddy is in integration phase, and he needs to be the hardest working player on the team right now.

If you look back to his first interview when he came to the team, he showed his mindset to us. "I'm much more suited to the attacking mid/playmaking forward role, but I'll do my best at left wing" (I'm paraphrasing)

This may or may not have been a continued theme of his, but if it has been (not saying it has), you can be sure it will negatively affect his chances to be used by the coach.

I still say this is more of an integration thing coupled with the pressure of a tight table. I think we'll be seeing more of him soon.

(I project a start, or sub in around minute 60 on Wednesday)

I wouldnt say 'square 1' just yet. Cuper brought him there, and is still coach. He will give him a fair chance, and knows already waht he can do, as he has scored 2 nice goals, and has had some impressive play. Fans just have to be patient, it isnt the end of the world.

One thing...I went to the Aris website and looked at the records of the different players. There isn't much info there, but it did say that the player (Calvo I think?) played 36 games his 1st year. And about 30 his second year. And about 30 this year.

Is that a typo? Or did he get into alot of games, just not for many minutes? (they didn't show minutes or sub vs. starts).

I cant comment on that, hopefully one of our Aris friends can help us! Good point though...hmmm....

Also what year did he come? As Aris were relegated at one point, i think in 05 or 06' maybe.

its participation in squad. His games are a lot that year 2007/8 since we went to UEFA groups and played a lot of games, we were at Greek Cup final against Olympiakos and lost it, plus the championship games. Actually Calvo was Javito's substitute at first years since he was too young and learning stuff.
Now his progress is amazing especially after Cuper arrived. A Fact that Calvo admitted in an interview. He is 2 years older from Adu and seems so soccer mature this year. Thats why i expect Adu to shine with Cuper.

If you believe THIS is why he is not comparable and not because of a clear lack of ability in comparison to these 2 best players in the world, well, then I don't think you know what you are talking about. That is insane man, the coaching and youth systems have VERY LITTLE to do with a guy like Ronaldo who is obviously extremely talented as a physical specimen and with his motor skills. Freddy looks like a recreational player in comparison to these 2 guys. Sorry, I'm all for the development of talent but you can't begin to give the above bolded part of your statement as reasoning to an unfair comparison.

Ask the Brasilians in the U20's ,where Adu was still 18 mind you, who looked like the recreational players...

At least Freddy can console himself by watching thirty thousand fanatics shoot flares and fireworks at Aris, instead of ten people waving white flags of surrender at Belenonsense. So he's got that going for him.:D
