    I doubt santos would mind.

Some of the teams they play against in the state tournament have terrible pitches. Last year I saw a game in which large holes had been filled with sand to try to even the field

Hey guys, the grass is the least of my worries. In fact, they sell a special paint for grass. You can actually paint the grass green and it will not affect the life of the grass at all. I think they sell it in home depot. See you at Santo's game. I got my tickets yesterday.

There's a difference between not growing and dead.
Oh by the way flush that gold fish, its not growing because it is dead.
I worry about the new sod taking root, and about someone twisting an ankle or worse in a seam.

I don't know if we should do that. We wouldn't want Robinho to think he caught some kind of disease.

Judging from the link that QyrsDonnel posted, it looks like some of you are going all chicken little based on a few lousy twitter pics taken at night with janky little camera phones - not exactly the ideal situation for accurate color reproduction. This photo from the link, which was taken only four days ago, tells a more promising story. You can see a few browned spots but nothing major, and certainly not taking up half the pitch.

That's a phenomenon known as shade.

The blog post you cited ends with "The pitch will be ready!" So right now you're the only one who's worried.

Matt (and Frankie) are right. Chill.

Look again. Tell me what is causing that perfectly straight line of shade, and what the single directional source of light is to create that distinct shadow. The twitter picture from last night pretty clearly showed that half the pitch is currently gone, ie, they've already cut it out and will be laying new sod.

My first instinct was with you, that it was just a bad picture with a bad light source, but it is evident, as confirmed by Stover, that they had problems with the sod.

Now, I don't think it's a big deal at all. I'm not even certain that it is indicative of problems with the heating system. (I don't know anyone who has a heating system in their lawns, but their grass is still alive.) I tend to go with the complete lack of sunlight theory--that or some of the sod simply didn't take. I'm not a landscaper though.

What I do believe, though, is that a) athletic fields do need resodding from time to time, and b) they are fixing it.

Please note that was also where the snow stayed the longest after every successive storm. Not only was it not getting any light, it was also put into the deep freeze. I'm sure they didn't anticipate the level of snowfall, including two storms that dumped upwards of a two feet, each, during the month of February, when the grass is actually supposed to be waking up again.

Dead grass and all, it will be better than LA and Houston's fields.

    Re: Sod Problems?

First of all, I'd ask you and the Red Bulls to define "ready". Laid on the ground is not what I would call ready. If they were lay the sod today 3/4/10 that would give it 2.5 weeks to grow, before the soft opening. Look at you lawn, is it growing? Maybe I am worrying too much, but I have reason to worry, I've seen what happens when sod is not given enough time. The Trenton Thunder have to delay the start of their home season in their first year because it was deemed to dangerous to play on. I hope I am wrong and everything goes as planned, God knows this organization deserves a few breaks. But if I am right and JP Angel goes down with a ankle injury, everyone will be screaming about the conditions of the turf.

Yeah, it's almost like no one has ever played on freshly-laid sod before.

When Red Bull says ready, I'm sure they mean taken root. Daytime temps are supposed to be above freezing for the next week. I'm sure the heating system can keep the ground from freezing at night. And the snow in the forecast for today is fizzling out.

I'd call this the controversy du jour. Cassandras are always at the ready.

Okay, but what would make a strip of grass appear blacker than Dick Cheney's soul in a photo then? Again, I just think you've been looking at poorly exposed nighttime photos and mistaking the grass for a dirt surface.

    Compare this:

    With this:

We all know what color the artificial turf at Giants Stadium was.

Take a look again at the photo I linked previously that was taken on Saturday, which was taken from the south end looking north across the pitch during the day. It shows a relatively healthy and green if somewhat spotty pitch - not the kind of "disaster" that would require having half of the pitch torn out. It certainly looks better than my lawn does right now.

Also, why have the Twitter posters not mentioned that half of the pitch was allegedly torn out?

I am sure our state of the art field has a root watering/feeding system and temperature regulator underneath as well so our grass can be better controlled than ones at our homes. I am sure it will not be an issue.

Don't worry. The new CBA guarantees the pitch will be ready in time. Of course, this only applies if the new CBA is signed by both sides...

so after we resod the pitch, what will be the new "in" thing to panic about? "OH NO, THERE ARENT ENOUGH URINAL CAKES! THE BATHROOMS WILL SMELL LIKE URINE!"
