According to balompiedominicano.blogspot.com the DR might send the MNT and also the FNT to the central american games in Magayuez, PR For each team they will ask the secretary of sports 5 million rds, which is like 139,000 US IMHO, with that amount of money there are lots of better ways to improve dominican soccer
They are planning on sending a good team with lots of Dominicanos playing abroad, one of them would be Jonathan Faña Frias from the PR Islanders
Well unless they're sub23... I doubt they will be able to play... sorry try again... the DR is not going to beat Puerto Rico anytime soon even by cheating (just kidding)
Cool then it will be interesting to see... I know its U21 plus 3 U23 reinforcements... so he might be in there...
For the women - they can't just send a team - they have to qualify first There are 4 places for Caribbean teams, 4 for Central American. Dominican Republic are hosting a qualifying group in the next few days: 26th March - Dominican Republic v Turks & Caicos Islands 28th March - Haiti v Turks & Cicos Islands 30th March - Dominican Republic v Haiti If they win the group, they will qualify for the 8-team Caribbean Championship. The top 3 teams from this will qualify for the Central American & Caribbean Games, plus Puerto Rico as hosts. Dominican Republic are not even favourites to win their qualifying group, let alone finish in the top 3 of the Caribbean.
I wish we could rely on HARD AND CONSISTENT WORK, and not on good luck Anyway on sunday we had the second game HAITI 5 - 0 T&C
I think DR should take the initiative to create and host a yearly Great-Antilles Cup with Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica. Additionally, a Hispaniolan cup with clubs from Haiti and DR would benefit DR football greatly. Of course, Haiti would gain little in the Hispaniolan cup, but the Great-Antilles tournament would benefit everybody! I notice my Dominican barbers do follow the World Cups and are fairly comfortable discussing soccer. They actually told me of a time when soccer was quite popular in the country and that there were some good school-based clubs. They cannot recall however how and why the sport sort of died out in the country. Well, if I were the director/president of the DR national soccer association, that would have been in my plan.
From what I understand, it was typical corruption on our part. In the 1970s, the "club" team presidents convinced the federation and the league to ban school teams from playing in the league. The school clubs had been able to offer scholarships to athletes, and thus had attracted better talent and started to dominate the league. Since the schools also offered instant fans (adults support their school, obviously!), there was also immense fan support for these clubs. But once the influence of other club owners got the UNPHU and UASD (I believe those two were the dominant ones) banned from professional league play, popularity waned. It's not as if university teams playing in professional leagues is unheard of... ever hear of Mexico's Pumas UNAM? Anyhow that's the story I heard.
One idea that I've thrown around a few times is having our massively popular baseball teams (among the best outside of the MLB and Japan, it seems) should start fielding soccer teams. Most futbol clubs in Europe (such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan) also field teams in other sports (basketball, handball, car racing). Heck, el Escogido and el Licey already field golf teams once a year. Having el Escogido, Licey, and las Aguilas field a futbol team in La Liga Mayor would provide fan allegiances to Dominican fans that don't relate to our current teams. Maybe they could even essentially merge these teams with one of the current teams in their cities.
