Article from Univision says Michael Orozco is no longer with San Luis of the Mexican League and will join the Philadelphia Union to be more in the eye of Bob Bradley to make the World Cup.

I dont know enough about the situation, but I would say the USMNT midfield and defense got worse after Nowak left.

He clearly likes Michael's ability choosing him for both the olympics and now at the Union.

I also think that once Michael learned the 'left back' position it directly lead to our better performance against the dutch. I would rather see him at left back than Bornstein as he is a natural defender not a converted striker/midfielder.

It is a shame that red cards mean one thing for some players on teh USMNT and something completely different for others. He got dropped from Bradley's team directly after receiving that red card against Nigeria. Bob Bradley's son is working on a red card for every major tournament, but seems to never miss a beat.

Given our desperate need for defensive help in the middle and on the left, it boggles the mind that he was jettisoned so impatiently from the team.

Bullshit. He got called in to the senior team the next time he was available after getting the red card, much to the consternation of parts of BigSoccer.

A great move for Philly who's assembling quite a team. They are gonna be young but they have a nice group of core vets. I would include Michael as a "vet" given his number of games in Mexico. For whatever reason Michael was not in favor towards the end of the Mexican season. San Luis as a whole were dreadful in the Clausura and I think changed coaches (not 100% sure) so they may have contributed to Michael being on the bench. Nonetheless, if this article is indeed true, Michael is walking into a good situation in Philly. He's going to play whether it be as a LB or CB.

Re: Michael Orozco Back to MLS (Philadelphia)

From 2009 MLS PLAYER RULES AND REGULATIONS SUMMARY

    (L) RETURNING U.S. NATIONAL TEAM POOL PLAYERS
In the event a U.S. National Team pool player playing abroad returns to the U.S. and there is interest from multiple MLS teams, preference will be given first to a team prepared to use an allocation. If there is more than one team prepared to use an allocation on a particular player, the current season's allocation rankings as determined by the MLS Competition Committee would be used. In the event no team is willing to use an allocation, the player will be assigned via waivers.

Orozco is currently listed as part of the US National Team Pool so this applies to him.

... and didn't they just trade away their allocation spot to DCU so that DCU could bring in Perkins?

Sounds like MLS is making it up as they go again.

Because they didn't use an allocation to pick up Califf. Danny's rights were owned the the San Jose/Houston franchise, so they traded for those rights.

This is a nice move by both the Union and Orozco.

Wrong. This is sooooo wrong it's mindboggling

You do realize Orozco played for the USA after the Olympics?

You do realize that Orozco played like crap last fall and was seeing very little playing time for San Luis

Orozco's drop in the national team's depth chart is as a result of his play not a red card. It's the same reason why you no longer saw Marvell Wynne, Demarcus Beasley, Sasha Kljestan, Eddie Johnson, Freddy Adu, or Heath Pearce in important World Cup Qualifiers last fall. None of them proved they were playing at that level.

Correct, but they traded that top allocation spot to DC, so DC could land Troy Perkins.

Philly are now 7th (IIRC) in the allocation order.

Wouldn't it be New Yorks pick up? As they are at the top of the allocation order.

Would be a good spot for Orozco who would walk into the starting lineup on Day 1.

I've never really understood some of these allocation rules.

It's been reported that Dallas have been after Lee Nguyen, but they need to move up in the allocation order to take him. Lee is no more of a US international than Michael is.

I guess it's conceivable that the other clubs passed on him in the allocation process. Maybe there were wink-wink shake-shake kind of agreements.

I havent seen him on the backline for ages despite him starting in a better league than MLS. I can recall Spector getting the call and he is almost always riding the bench while WestHam has no defensive injuries.

Instead he puts big, slow, bumbling defenders back there.

Michael is not perfect, but his skill on the ball, confidence and passing are superior to ANY central defender we have.

I dont know if he is physical enough yet or experienced enough yet, but is definitely worthy of more playing time.

Orozco got a run in the semi-final round at T&T. He was pretty poor, and I think this is why he's out of the picture for now.

If he can have a solid start to the season in MLS he'll certainly get another look.

And there may be a legit criticism there (although I recall Orozco went a while where there was an issue with either his form or getting starts at San Luis), but I think you were off base ascribing the decision to Orozco's red card. The fact that he was called into the full national team after the Olympics gives the lie to that line of thinking.

    We're capping players, not leagues.

And even if we were, wouldn't this thread title suggest something?

I want all Nats and potential Nats to thrive, so I hope Orozco succeeds in MLS (or MFL, if he ends up staying). But he hasn't been playing well or much lately. It's not enough to play a different style; a player has to play that style well to deserve call-ups. Especially a central defender. Especially a young central defender. Right now, that doesn't seem to the case.
