Very tight race with a mere victory separating 5 or 6 places in the standings.

A huge win for SSFC in LA to get them to 32. Winning just the four final home matches (way easier said than done, of course) would likely just be enough for Seattle to 'get in'at 44 points.

Chivas USA have two matche in hand over multiple clubs.

DC are fading just a bit.

I think Toronto will move up to 5th or 6th by years end. Watch out for New England, they usually get hot around this time of the year. Playoffs wouldnt be complete without a Nicol team.

Plus New England have played the fewest matches in the league so far (18).

Oh sweet! for some reason I thought the top 4 in each conference goes through, making our chances at advancing to be about 50/50, but in this format, we have a much better chance. I was really sweating it there for a while.

Hopefully New England holds off on getting hot until Sundays match against Salt Lake.

Yeah, we will have quite a large say in whether or not the Revs get in, as we have yet to play them and will twice.

Of course, that works *both* ways, and matching up against a Nicol's club fighting for their playoff lives will be quite a challenge.

As big as the win over LA was, even bigger would be to follow that with three points over the Revs at Qwest on Thursday...

This is a whacky, wonderful website:
    http://www.sportsclubstats.com/USA/MLS/West/Sounders.html

If you've been following it for a while it is quite addicting but a bit of a roller coaster ride. Great stats, though.

As of the win over LA: Sounders' chances of making the playoffs are at 86.6%.

We're about to drop out of contention unless we win the next couple games

This next one is simply a must win. No excuses. No more asinine cards. No more pathetic, clueless play in the box. Time to actually play a full 90 and not continue with the FUBAR act.

The players need to understand what they are representing. How do they want to go down in the history books? Do they want to win the US Open Cup, contend for the Supporters Shield, and steamroll into the MLS Cup playoffs? This could still be a special season. Dominant teams play like they are possessed. What is the Sounders spirit? We have 8 games left to show it.

All of the teams behind us have at least one game in hand, as does the team tied with us. And we have road games in New England, DC and Columbus.

This is going to be a real tough final stretch.

By the way, the MLS site has Toronto at 22 games played, not 21.

Next game is definitely a must win. Not only that we decrease Toronto's chance for playoffs but a Galaxy loss or tie would put us to 2nd place in the west.

Many fo the team we are in contention with also have to play one another in the closing weeks. LA seems to have the easiest schedule with only 3 more road games. By the look of it... Houston may have the toughest, only three home games left ..... plus you add in the CCL games on their schedule. Colorado and Houston play 4 playoff contending teams while LA and Chivas play 5. Seattle needs to win their remaining home matches and pull of a road win or two. Ties on the road will be helpful as long as we get the remaining 9 points at home.

Just so we don't have two threads doing basically the same thing, figured I'd move my little table from the predictions thread to here. If this is an issue, let me know and I'll move it back.;)

    Code:
Rank Club Home PPG Away PPG Est. Final Points
    1 (1) Columbus 2.27 1.27 54

    3 (4) Chivas USA 2.20 1.10 50
    4 (3) Chicago 1.45 1.83 50
    5 (10) New England 1.80 1.20 45

    9 (8) D.C. United 2.00 0.75 42
    10 (9) Toronto FC 1.75 0.90 40
    11 (11) Real Salt Lake 2.00 0.45 37
    12 (12) Kansas City 1.20 0.90 32
    13 (13) FC Dallas 1.64 0.45 32

    15 (15) New York 1.09 0.08 18
Sounders are hanging by a thread, DCU dropped out, and NER made a serious jump from 10th to 5th after two wins. Looks like the predictions of their demise was too soon. Also, just so you know, there appears to be a lot of ties here, but that is mainly a result of me rounding up to the nearest integer. As an example, Chicago, Chivas and Houston appear to be tied at 50, but in reality Houston has 50 pts, Chivas 49.5, and Chicago 49.32.

Actually, if you look at LA's home/away points per game, they are a much better road team than they are a home team. Having four home games and three road games is actually a pretty tough go for LA. New England and Chivas is also not going to have a fun couple of weeks with five home and five away to cram into the nine weeks left in the season.

I don't put confidence in good teams continuing to play better on the road than at home. It usually just means they were on a run of bad form when they had a clump of home games and that their home record is about to improve.

That dude with the playoff chances website shows Sounders odds ticking up dramatically from 41 to 42 points. I think that's right. People always talk about forty points, but with a lot of clubs looking like they have a chance and having games in hand, I think forty two is needed for safety.

We are on about 1.4 points per game to date, which would have us finish with around forty three. To look at it another way, at the current rate we can expect three draws and 2-3 wins. Two wins and three draws probably get us in.

Sounders are on the outside looking in on the playoffs as of this week. The month and a half of crap has finally caught up to them. Worse yet, four of their last six games are against teams that are currently in the playoff race (DCU, Columbus, NER, Chivas). Sounders are going to need to kick it up a notch or they'll be joining Toronto in the double digit positions and will be watching the playoffs from home.

A little shuffling in the playoff race following this weekend's games, unfortunately the Sounders are still on the outside looking in.

It's gut check time. I have faith we'll pull it off even if it comes down to the last second of the last game in the regular season. We always seem to do better under pressure, playing down a man, the innaugural game, and the Cup game for example.
