I don't know if this is the proper forum or if anyone here is interested but the 2009 USA Men's Maccabi Soccer team has been selected. Games are in Israel this July. Noted past USA participants include Bennie Feilhaber, Jeff Agoos, and Jonathan Bornstein. Positions and colleges/clubs noted for some. Looks like there are 4-5 professional players in the group. The majority are Division 1 US college players. A couple of division 3 players...Two still in high school including the keeper from the US U18 team. Ryan Adeleye (D) - UNC Kyle Altman (M) - Trinity, TX/Minn Thunder Jordan Asheghian (F) - USC Yaron Bacher (M) - UCF Rhett Bernstein (D) - Brown/Maccabi Tel Aviv Joshua Bienenfeld (D) - Duke Jacob Duker (F) - Amherst Russell Gellman (D) - ? h.s. Brian Kuritzky (F) - Cornell Zachary MacMath (GK) - US U18 team Michael Nathan (F) - Sonoma State Chase Neinken (F) - UVA Charles Reiter Andy Rosenband (M) - Chicago Xtreme/US Futsal Misha Rosenthal (GK) - Northwestern Scott Rowling (M) - UNH Daniel Schultz (D) - BU Leonid Sharf - ?Olimpia Dor Yasur (D) - American U Joshua Zipin (D) - Davidson
Re: 18th Maccabi Games - 2009 Wow, this is a far cry from the US team that they could have had: Andy Gruenebaum, Jonathan Bornstein, Sam Brill, Kevin Friedland, Leonid Krupnik, Erik Hort, Michael Enfield, Benny Feilhaber, Jarryd Goldberg, Jordan Gruber and of course Alexander Zahavi...
Re: 18th Maccabi Games - 2009 The second 'high school player' you refer to - went to Bradenton Academy, played at Maryland this past year and led his team to a national championship. He also played on US National U 17, U18, and went to China with the U23s. Hardly a high school kid!
Re: Canada Squad The Canadian squad is as follows (I have only heard of two players on this team): Marc Askenasi Nils Binstock Aime Bitton Tomer Chencinski Peter Chivers Zion Cohen Kilian Elkinson Daniel Frankel Ilan Friedman Felix Gelt Isaac Levy Yair Rabinovich Roy Raviv Aaron Richer Bradley Rose Gil Vainshtein
Re: United Kingdom squad Well, no idea if Scotland is going to field their own team for the football competition (they are sending their own delegation this year to compete separately) but Jonathan Kestenbaum has named his squad for the games. some players have semi-professional and professional experience: Goalkeepers Matt Davis (Hillingdon Borough) Andrew Goldman (Sydney F.C.) Defenders Daniel Cole (Wingate & Finchley) Guy Helman (London Lions) Guy Morris (London Lions) David Soutar (Crowborough Athletic) Michael Sacks (Wingate & Finchley) Sam Sloma (Grays Athletic) Midfielders Alex Smith (Team Bath) Alex Levack (London Lions) Jonathan Kurrant (Loughborough Town) Andy Glynne (Hillingdon Borough) Josh Kennet (Maccabi Herzliya) Craig Ellis (Wingate & Finchley) Ben Lauffer (London Lions) Daniel Stanton (Wingate & Finchley) Michael Warwick (Witton Albion F.C.) Forwards Mitch Hahn (Enfield Town) Daniel Berg (Potters Bar Town) Paul Hakim (St Albans City) James Gershfield (Fort Lewis College) Matt Stock (Stade Brest 29) Lee Cash (London Lions) I recognize Guy Hellman and Daniel Berg. Although they play in the Maccabi Sunday League in London, they managed to make this squad for the second time in a row.
Re: Rhett Bernstein Rhett Bernstein was never signed by Maccabi Tel Aviv. As far as I can tell, the guy has had trials in Sweden, the United Kingdom and was part of the MLS Combine but never has received a contract offer.
Re: 2009 Maccabiah Games [R] Didn't he play for the Guatemalan Under-20 side? They probably don't have a team for the Maccabiah, but I don't get why they allow these guys to play for countries. He was on the Israeli youth sides when he was at Stoke City. He should not be allowed to represent the UK since Israel will have a squad there.
Re: 2009 Maccabiah Games [R] That isn't even the silliest thing. At the 2005 Maccabiah, Shay Doron, a leader of the Israeli national women's basketball team, played on the American side. It was absolute stupidity. I know that she immigrated to the United States as a kid, but she represents Israel in all major competitions so the Maccabiah shouldn't be different. Then again, I think that Tal Brody played for the United States the first time and Israel the second time because he immigrated to Israel after his first Maccabiah in Israel.
Re: 2009 Maccabiah Games [R] The Netherlands pulled out at the last minute, so here are the current groups for the Maccabiah: Group A Canada Israel Germany Russia Switzerland Group B Australia Chile Peru United States Group C Mexico South Africa Sweden Venezuela Group D Argentina Brazil France United Kingdom Where is the Schnorrer? I want to know if Venezuela will be sending any quality players. I think that the Israeli Under-19 side this year might be easier for some squads like the US which is fielding some quality college players, the UK with some good semi-professionals and the always strong Brazilian side. Can't find the squad list for Mexico this year, but they have been good in previous tournaments.
Friendly Results Hapoel Be'er Sheva 2-0 United States Fulltime The Americans are in Israel preparing for the games which open on July 12. In a friendly against Ligat ha'Al's newly promoted Be'er Sheva, they held strong in the first half and performed admirably. Ryan Adeleye hit the cross bar with a header in the second half. After the match, Be'er Sheva manager Guy Azurri, spoke to some of the Americans about possibly staying after the Maccabiah and joining the club. Since most of the players are with college sides or PDL squads, I don't see them turning this down unless they were really headed for MLS. Wingate & Finchley 3-3 United Kingdom Fulltime What a bizarre friendly. The Jewish club in England plays the Jewish national team (albeit, missing Joe Jacobson). Such a result for the UK doesn't say much for their readiness for the football competition.
Re: 2009 Maccabiah Games [R] Midfielder Scott Shulton has replaced Maccabi Herzliya's Josh Kennet in the UK squad due to injury. Shulton used to play for Wycombe.
Re: 2009 Maccabiah Games [R] Soutar's got Brazil in his sights Nice article about the UK's David Soutar.
Re: Friendly Results Thanks so much for posting. Where did you find the write-up of the scrimmage or were you there ?
There was an article on Sport5's website yesterday. Someone put the Argentina squad on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_at_the_2009_Maccabiah_Games_–_Men's_team_squads It doesn't show any professionals or semi-professionals but I don't recognize all of the clubs.
Result United Kingdom 1-3 TNS Fulltime On July 2, 2009 Team GB played their final tune up before heading to Israel. They lost to Welsh champions TNS 3-1 at Lilleshall. Mitch Hahn scored the only goal for the Britons. Not a bad result, but then again we don't know how the preparations are going for any of the other football teams.
It should be interesting to see how young Israel professionals (it's pretty much the U-19 team) fare against American collegiate players if they meet eachother. Also one of the players for the US team (Yaron Bacher) attends my university, but I've never heard of him until now. Maybe I should follow our team next year.
Alot of players on the US team are NCAA players for soccer.... Most of them played house leauge and A, AA and possibly AAA leauge.. None of them ring a bell and they compete not only against heavy weights Israel, but also countries like Brazil, Germany and France(?) which bring players who play in Amateur and Semi-Amateur teams....like Hakoach Ramat Gan and Maccabi Frankfhurt
Yes, but practically the entire squad plays in the summer for PDL clubs which are on the same level as all these European Maccabi and amateur clubs.
