Battery to face MLS’s Houston Dynamo in Quarterfinal of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Match set for Tuesday, July 7 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island

    Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery will face the two-time MLS champion Houston Dynamo in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; the game is set for Tuesday, July 7 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island ($10 - $18, gates 6:30 PM, kick off 7:30 PM). The Battery advanced to the Quarterfinal round with a 3-1 win Tuesday night over Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA;

The league-leading Houston Dynamo defeated the Austin Aztex (USL1) 2-0 on Wednesday night to advance to the Quarterfinals.

Corey Ashe and Dominic Oduro supplied the goals for Houston as they defeated the Austin Aztex in their third round fixture.

Charleston is unbeaten at Blackbaud Stadium in 2009 with six wins and three ties. The Battery has also been solid defensively through the first three rounds of the U.S. Open Cup with six goals scored and just one conceded.

Charleston has played Houston in the U.S. Open Cup for the past two seasons and has advanced past the MLS outfit on both occasions. In 2007 Stephen Armstrong scored an extra-time winner for the Battery and last year Charleston survived a penalty kick shoot-out (1-1 AET) to move on.

The Battery enjoyed a tremendous run in the Open Cup in 2008 making it to the championship game, but losing 2-1 to MLS’s DC United who claimed the title with goals from Luciano Emilio and Fred; Battery midfielder Ian Fuller scored Charleston’s goal.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team that advances deepest into the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup also receives an automatic berth into the CONCACAF Champions League.

When will the US Open Cup stop giving us 3rd or quarterfinal ties with teams from texas...lol. Dallas was 3 yrs in a row and probably a 4th if they qualified this year, Houston is 3yrs in a row

I personally would like to see other teams!!!

What their regional???....No way I would've never guessed that....lol. They've been trying this regional thing that last couple years...what a shock. But thanks for the point out

It was frustration because i hate this regional set up because that means as long as you or dallas are in it we'll have to meet you in the 3rd and/or 1/4 finals and personally i'd like a random draw.

Good luck guys! You know I'll be rooting for you even as we are up here at the same time, playing some scrub USL2 team that knocked us out of the USOC a few years ago :)

Aren't you guys closer to us than to Houston?

Should be another decent crowd, unless the afternoon thunderstorm is later than usual. The local Spanish speaking radio and TV stations are sponsoring the game, like they did against Chivas last week.

Hope so. I was pleasently surprised by the crowd last week. Like you said if the rain stays away, we could see numbers close to that again tonight.

good article in todays paper about Dom and his visits to Charleston

Battery Host Houston Thrid Straight Year

Should be a good match tonight.

Not much to say after that dismal performance. Couldnt get a string of passes together, cant blame it on the pitch (cuz Houston had no problem), we looked HORRIBLE. I hope this isnt a sign of things to come.

The only positive....the crowd. The fact that majority of us stayed there through the rain, 4 goals, and a dismal performance....at least someone showed up...just sucks we were in the stands and couldnt do anything about it but yell at "sweet cheeks"...lol

Our guys were tired and the coach will the first one to tell you. They didn't get back from Montreal until Monday, so they had tired legs, but never fear, the have acouple of days off to rest.

I dont want to hear it from the coach....lol. The coach can only do so much this is on the players. They were trying to be fancy with their passing when your down 3-0, in the rain, and puddles on the pitch...isnt the best time to get fancy. They werent stepping up, Randi was having to come back on defense, it was just a poor game. Were they tired maybe but we've had 1 days rest and travel before and have been doing just fine on the season.

They didnt come out and play period. No need to make excuses for em.

    Bummer, dudes :(

Now you've forced me to root for Houston in the next round against Seattle (who I actually kind of like a little) so that we can host the Final if we happen to get past Rochester.

I guess now we'll have to go to the CCC again in 2010 to use the Coffee Pot Cup
