Pretty sad that the initial concept of the SSS was to have the stadium pay for its club and not lose out in revenue or rather have the non soccer events offset the soccer losses. This will be the first team to have their own park that moves. Its crazy. Doesn't the club own Crew Stadium? What will the club do with the park if the team moves or folds? I'm afraid I don't understand....

You're not listening to me. This will not be the first team to have their own park that moves. Because they're not moving.

    The Crew aren't moving.

It's not crazy. It's not happening. They're not folding. They're not moving.

People wanting to watch Brazil don't necessarily want to watch MLS.

So with all the success that Miami has had with pro soccer we should give Vegas a team right now!

Fair enough but in 15 years when watching MLS is just like watching Brazil - I hope South Floridians aren't complaining that all these other cities (including 4 in Canada) have a team and they don't.

Also, I heard that if a team is in Las Vegas it would almost surely be in a domed stadium attached to a hotel and casino in Henderson. I heard it would be near the new M Resort on the acres of land they own.

    Viewership is viewership!

More homes watching soccer, football or futbol wherever in the world it is being played, whichever teams are playing, means that there is interest in the game! . . . What were the ratings like in Las Vegas for the Baseball World Series last fall? For the Stanley Cup Finals?

If Las Vegas can make the map in television viewership for the sport that we all want to see expand in THIS country, then we should give the city its due and at least consider them a viable candidate for a soccer expansion team in the highest level league.

    Come on Vegas!

Well, Vegas is planning on building a soccer stadium. They're bidding to host World Cup matches in it. Mind you, it'll probably be a multi-use stadium, but it'll have a soccer-sized field.

“In 10 or 15 years, we see soccer as bigger than football in this country.”
New England Tea Men president Derek Carroll, 1979

“Soccer is going to be the number one sport in this country very soon.”
New York Cosmos president Steve Ross, 1979

“This sport will take off. There is absolutely no way that it will not bypass everything else. This country will be the center of world soccer. In the 80s there will be a mania for the game here. The NASL will be the world’s number one soccer league. And it will be the biggest sports league in the USA.”
North American Soccer League Commissioner Phil Woosnam, in 1977

“In 10 years, TV and soccer will be the same as TV and professional football are now.”
Woosnam again, also in 1977. Still waiting.

“In six or eight years our franchises will be worth more than those in the National Football League.”
    Phil Woosnam in 1973

“If you give soccer a little television exposure, it will be off and running.”
Woosnam in Sports Illustrated, August 30, 1976

The way the economy is, especially among the gaming industry in Vegas, from what I'm told, I wouldn't be looking for anybody to be building a big ol' domed stadium there anytime soon.

I wonder if the reason Vegas had to move back to San Diego was because it cost so much for the embroidery on the uniforms? Hopefully they'll make use of technology next time and either screen or sublimate the logo on the shirts, or at least use a Meistergram or something. Great logo, lousy embroidery. And what's up with those Cosmos-style numbers? Yecch! Ever heard of die-cutting? Hello!

Guess I watched one too many "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" episodes. Ya think? :D

Oh yeah, Alan Mayer was one of my favorite keepers growing up. I always wanted one of those green adidas keeper jerseys.

I remember all of that, and I think we all wanted to believe it. While soccer did finally challenge the other sports as far people playing goes, spectatorship did, and still does, lag way far behind. I think Woosnam was just trying to be optimistic, knowing secretly that the league was always one or two franchises away from completely imploding, even back in the salad days of 1974-79 (and I say that as being one who grew up with the NASL).

I'd love to just sit down with Mr. Woosnam some time and just pick his brain about the NASL. As soon as I find out how to do it, I'm going to try to get him inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, if he isn't there already.

Not to mention, no one outside of the market would be able to see any of the matches on tv/interweb or read match reports afterwards ("What happens in Vegas...").

    -------------------------------------------------

    I thought this was "BigSoccer.com", not "BashSoccer.com" . . . my mistake, wrong website . . .

Give poor Phil a break. This was over 30 years ago, and he was the first 'Uncle Phil' just trying to do his best to make sure this great game had a chance to succeed in this country.

Some day it will, but not overnight. 30 years is not a long time in U.S. Sports leagues history . . . The NFL didn't sell out the first 3 Super Bowls in the 70's, The NHL relocated over a dozen franchises during the 70's-80's ; The NBA had to merge with the ABA to ensure it's survival on a National scale. Only baseball was going strong in the 70's, and look what they did to themselves in the 90's . . . Phil Woosnam was only using the trends of the time and trying to do a little crystal ball viewing . . .

Just think about what would it be like now in the US now if he were right???

Perhaps it would be FC Dallas moving into a $1,000,000,000 new Stadium and not the Dallas Cowboys . . .;)

105 degrees here at 7:30pm. Perfectly acceptable.

What does the Pro game in America being pleasing on the eye in 15 years have anything to do with MLS being the number one league or soccer being the number one sport in North America? MLS could be the #6 or even #10 in the States but as long as the revenue is such that the salary cap is effectively in the $10m to $30m range, we can get very talented players and managers in out league.

And I live in Vegas 6 months of the year and the construction costs of a SMALL ol' domed stadium is less than half of what it was 3 years ago.

Okay, then. Let's see how quickly it gets done. Small ol' domed stadium? Fantastic. Can't wait to see the plans and the specs.

I'd like to know why the Quicksilvers were "one and done," especially in light of the fact that they outdrew Chicago, Rochester CT, and Hawaii, and were in striking distance of Ft. Lauderdale and Toronto. Was the owner in over his head, or was he just mad that he didn't set the woods on fire, and just took his ball and went home?

that coupled with the fact that they only drew 7,092 for their home matches

I've lived in Vegas for five years, and it's never been 105 degrees at 7:30. What a ridiculous statement. By that time in the evening, it is usually more like 80 but feels cooler with pretty frequent, comfortable breezes.
