It would be interesting to see a stat of the posters with most Reps as a percentage of total posts. Perhaps if you achieve a certain ratio (with some minimum # of posts required), you could become eligible to join some sort of MVP club.

Think this would be a good idea?

Would that be total posts since the rep was last reset?

How about posts in play by play threads vs FFA?

Anyone want a good recipe for Chicken Vindaloo?

Does anyone actually pay attention to - or care about rep? Maybe Dark Knight could transfer all of my rep to you, I don't need it.

maybe all the posts in WR vs rep amount should equal double rep.

Does that mean I better use my massive reservoir of rep now?

Re: Statistic: Reps as a % of Total Posts

What is the point of this? Since rep isn't displayed under your avatar on each post, it is essentially only for the user's own benefit. So... why reset it?

Only reason I can think of is it takes up too much storage space on the servers?

For the record, I think this idea is more than just for superficial value or bragging rights. BigSoccer is free (as it should be), and has been around for a while, so it's become kind of the starting point for anybody who wants to talk football. All of this is totally fine, except sometimes you get ridiculous responses by imbeciles or kids, and even some imbecile kids.

So I thought it would be a nice idea to differentiate some of the more serious posters. That way, reps would have greater meaning, and people might even be more careful about doling them out.

Re: Statistic: Reps as a % of Total Posts

Rep is good in the sense that it gives you positive feedback that you wouldn't necessarily get otherwise, as the comments would be out of place in the threads. In some ways it is good to be able to check out a poster's profile and get some hint of what others think of their contribution.

It does fall down in the sense that some seem to see it as a competition and apparently have groups who'll rep each other repeatedly to get large totals. It was always strange when in the days when you could sort member lists by rep, you'd see people near the top and be struck that you'd never even seen them make a post.

Maybe "reps in the last 90 days" or similar would make more sense. It's still give an indication of more respected posters, but it'd be much more of a pain for those rep cliques to keep their profiles up to 10 green dots permanently.

    +1

I don't care about my "rep count" as long as there remains a way to give and receive positive feedback on someone's post.

Actually, Huss prints it all out and keeps it in filing cabinets. It's a mess in the office.

I actually agree with this. I think the rep system to some extent increases the quality of posting among the non-moron crowd.

Why not make giving reputation a moderator only feature? It instantly eliminates (well, severely reduces ;)) abuse of it and means having reputation will be linked to positive contributions, as deemed by the moderating team.

I don't get it. You say rep is a good idea, but it doesn't work (which, by the way, makes me question the validity of your definition of a "good idea"). And yet, despite the fact that you admit rep doesn't work (and I might add, has never worked) you want to do a "rep reset," which, if history is any guide is a "bad idea" that doesn't work -- unless your intention is to annoy people with a fruitless and futile exercise in being annoying. Rep resets don't fix the problem with rep, they just make the numbers smaller. Sounds to me like a pretty pointless exercise.

It seems to me that what works with the rep system are the comments and the feedback. What doesn't work is the system of points. So get rid of the points and keep the comments and feedback. I'd propose the system we have now, but with these changes: no numerical points, unlimited use. Then it's almost like Twitter -- just a short private note, a kind of side-comment to the discussion, with a thumbs up or down added in. The analogy I keep thinking of is passing a note in class.

Those changes would mean entirely giving up on the idea that rep should reflect posting quality in some public fashion. But to a great extent you already gave up on this idea when you relegated rep to the user profile page. Maybe it's time to take the next step and get rid of the points entirely.

Is that a "good idea"? I don't know. Maybe. But it sounds a lot more interesting to me than another silly rep reset.

I don't care about the points, but I sure appreciate being able to use the messages. I use them far more as moderator than I did before, but I liked that option before as well.

If you decide to erase again, I would prefer not to start with point accruals, just the rep messages. If the plan is to keep the points, then I do agree that erasing them is problematic.

Keep the pos rep and get rid of the neg rep. How many times has a neg rep someone sent or received caused problems?

Just leave it at pos reps (no points needed) and go from there.

It's my guess that about 95% of bigsoccer members use and enjoy the rep as it was intended.

    Here's a string of thought:

Ah... yes but a small group of assholes and idiots will skew it by using neg rep to flame instead of debating

    There ya go.

PS: I dont care about being neg-repped and dont recall if I ever have been....
I do appreciate the several pos-repped though. And they dont have to comment on why they are repping me

    why did rep go?

Well why did it? It gave me a pupose in life and a thirst to provide positive and constructive posts in BigSoccer. Now i just don't feel the same way about BigSoccer.

    Signed one very angry poster.
