The old adage that anything can happen on derby day is especially true if you take a glance at the recent history between Tuscan clubs Fiorentina and Siena.

To the casual spectator Fiorentina should be favourites for the tie. After all, they are the kings of the region, having won the Scudetto on two occasions. Siena are only in their sixth season in Serie A and until 2000 they had never been outside of Serie C for more than five years.

In the past five seasons Fiorentina and Siena have met nine times and you would perhaps be surprised to discover just how close those encounters have been. The Viola have won four times, but only once with a lead of more than one goal while the Robur have managed to take all three points on three occasions and been victorious in each of the last two derbies.

As if history isn’t enough to make this weekend’s game unpredictable, both sides are going through a rocky patch, so form, which usually goes out of window on derby day anyway, is unlikely to tell us much about who is favourite ahead of this clash.

Fiorentina were beaten 2-0 by Inter on Sunday night and lost their place in the top four to Genoa as a consequence. The Viola were perhaps unlucky to lose, but created very little even with Alberto Gilardino and Adrian Mutu on the pitch.

Cesare Prandelli lined his side up in a 4-1-3-2 formation with Martin Jorgensen playing in front of the defence. With the trequartista substituted for an anchorman, Fiorentina’s attackers constantly had their backs to goal and they were easily kept in check by Inter’s defenders.

The Viola are likely to revert to their favoured 4-3-1-2 formation this weekend as they look to exploit Siena’s perceived defensive frailties. The Robur actually have one of the best backlines in Serie A, but they cashed five goals at home to Milan on Sunday and confidence is low.

Siena are seven points clear of the drop zone with 10 games remaining this season, so a win would take another step closer to safety.

Keep an eye on: Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina) – The 30-year-old Romanian missed a glorious opportunity to give Fiorentina the lead against Inter on Sunday night. You can guarantee he won’t make the same mistake twice if provided with a similar chance this weekend. The former Parma striker has scored 12 goals in 17 starts this season.

    Last season: Fiorentina 3-0 Siena

    Form guide: Fiorentina (W D W D L) Siena (D L D W D)

Fiorentina (probable): Frey; Comotto, Gamberini, Kroldrup, Vargas; Jorgensen; Kuzmanovic, Felipe Melo, Montolivo; Gilardino, Mutu

Siena (probable): Curci; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao, Del Grosso; Codrea, Vergassola, Galloppa; Kharja; Amoruso, Maccarone

None. If we don't come away with 3 points from this one then even a UEFA Cup position is a lofty goal.

Good to see us get a win, though from the highlights it didn't look that convincing.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I meant to do a lot more posting about this, but am out of town for a funeral.

No sweat, man. Take it easy. I keep myself busy ridiculing fascists in the P&CE forum anyway.
