NYRB picks MD Nick Zimmerman (James Madison):
A tall and strong looking above average player. In the right system he might be this year’s Jeff Cameron… or he might not.A four year starter at JMU, end his career 12th on school assist list with 21. 13 career goals to go along. Led JMU this year in goals (6), assists (5) and points (17).

2008: Colonial Athletic Association First Team.

2007: Colonial Athletic Association Second Team

2005: Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team.

Those 2 statements seem to conflict to me. If he scores 0.79 goals per game, I would consider that producing.

Columbus picks MD/FW Alex Grendi (Penn):
A average player without all that much remarkable skills. He’d be down a group… except that he’s a lefty. And left mids are hard to find. The first player in Penn history selected to the MLS Combine. Unanimous All-Ivy First Team in 2008, finishes his career with 20 assists. Led Quaker three of last four years in assists and was twice team MVP. Eight career goals including four game winners.

    2008: Ivy First Team

    2006: Ivy Second Team.

Seattle selects MD/FW Michael Fucito (Harvard):
For some reason Fucito is not on the final combine roster. Plays next to the Ivy super star Andre Akpan, which undoubtedly helped him get more opportunities. With Akpan was named the “Most Exciting Combination” in Division I Men’s Soccer by College Soccer News. Fucito is a lefty and like many forwards might be a good midfield possibility. 2004 Ivy Rookie of the Year and 2006 Harvard MVP. Red shirted in 2005. Two time All-American. Ends Harvard career with with 88 points on 32 goals and 24 assists.2008: All-American Second Team, Ivy First Team.

2007: All-American Second Team, Ivy First Team.

    2006: Ivy First Team.

2004: Ivy Rookie of the Year.

There are a few of our picks with a high potential to gain roster slots but we don't have room for them all (and thats before the Revs bring in another two SI's from south of the border :)))) Pre season is going to be a real no holds barred dog fight.

Colorado picks FW Ross Schunk (University of Redlands):
An always moving forward who looks to come back to midfield and combine going forward. Not fast enough in pace or feet for MLS.A prolific soccer at the lower level and two time SCIAC Player of the Year. Four straight conference titles. 18 goals his senior year following junior and sophomore campaigns of 16 goals and 21 goals respectively. His 8 goals his freshman year are paltry by comparison. 19 career assists to go with the 63 career goals.

2008: Second Team All-American, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and First Team

2007: Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team, Second Team All-American.

2006: Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and First Team, Second Team All-American.

LA picks MD/FW Kyle Patterson (St. Louis):
The top performing attacking wide midfielder at the combine. Can both attack and play defense. Has some pace.

The 2007 Atlantic Ten Offensive Player of the Year with ten goals and four assists, Patterson upped his production this year with twelve and five respectively and only scored a Atlantic Ten First Team nod. Patterson is a wide right midfielder or winger and is a leader for SLU on and off the field. A Birmingham native, Patterson will likely have his draft value hurt by his international status. As a youth, Patterson was a prolific goal scorer for West Bromwich Albion.

    2008: Atlantic Ten First Team.

2007: Top Drawer Soccer Second Team, Atlantic Ten Offensive Player of the Year, First Team

    2005: Atlantic Ten All-Rookie Team.

Chivas picks MD Jaime Franks (Wake Forest):
The “other wide player” on Wake’s great teams the last 4 years, Franks is totally overshadowed by his teammates. He’s a good defender and solid two way player that may yet have some usefulness. No accolades in the Atlantic Coast Conference isn’t a worry. It’s entirely possible I have him way to low, he’s just never stood out at Wake with all that talent.

KC picks MD Akeem Priestley (UConn):
A play maker type midfielder that reads to slow to be a top level player. Ball to slow to come off the feet but he can dribble a little.Jamaican International and former US U23, he’s been in the Jamaican system for many years. Priestley was Big East Second Team in 2008 with 10 points, three goals and four assists, in 16 games played. As a freshman at Jacksonville, Priestly notched 11 goals with 5 assists to earn Atlantic Sun first team recognition as well as All-Rookie Team.

    2008: Big East Second Team.

    2007: Big East Second Team.

06 Top Drawer Soccer Fifth Team, Big East Second Team.

2005: Atlantic Sun First Team, All-Freshman Team

Colorado picks FW Jordan Seabrook (South Florida):
Fast, strong, and dangerous. Has all the tools to be a great pro striker if he can put it together and get the right team.A player who has long been considered to have big upside and potential, Seabrook hasn’t seemed to progress all that much at South Florida. Seabrook burst onto the scene as a freshman when he led the Big East in scoring with fourteen goals, but hasn’t scored more than six goals in a season since. Sure he’s a marked man, but he has under-whelmed with only 31 career goals and a succession of second and third team Big East awards. Speed kills however and Seabrook has bags of it, motivation may have just been a problem in the college game. A former US U20.

    2008: Big East Third Team.

    2007: Big East Second Team.

2006: Top Drawer Soccer Third Team, Big East Third Team

    2005: Big East Second Team

Chicago picks MD Jokull Elisabetarson (UNC-Greensboro):
A shorter holding mid with a knack for being in the right place. Made some very nice passes including one for a goal early in the weekend. An Icelandic U21 with a green card, Elisabertarson is a three time Southern Conference First Team honoree. The one season he missed out was 2006 when he missed all of spring training playing with Iceland. Played PDL with the Carolina Dynamo. Charlotte has produced a few players at the USL level the last couple years, can Jokull make the step up to MLS?

    2008: Southern Conference First Team.

    2007: Southern Conference First Team.

2005: Southern Conference First Team & College Soccer News FAA as defender.

Colorado picks DF Henry Kalungi (Winthrop):
A former Ugandan U20, Kalungi was the Player of the Year and Defender of the Year for the Uganda Royal College in 2005 before coming to Winthrop. Played for Hampton Roads Piranhas of the PDL in 2007 and Fredericksburg in 2008.2008: Big South First Team.

    2007: Big South Second Team.

    2006: Big South First Team.

RSL picks MD Raphael Cox (Washington):
Speedy winger type but doesn’t have the skills to beat people one v one.A left footed wide mid, a three year starter for UW after transfer from Highline Community College where he lead the team to Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges title in 2004. During the regular season led the Pac-10 in points per game (1.18) and was fifth in overall points (20). He tallied career-highs in goals (seven) and points (20), with six assists. Again at 5′7″ size could be an issue.

    2008: Pac-10 First Team.

    2007: Pac-10 Second Team.

With the #55 pick, the Revs pick GK Tyrel Lacey (Tulsa):
70 saves and 0.60 GAA with 7 shutouts in 2008. Lacey currently ranked seventh in the nation in saves percentage and 14th in GAA. Played behind Dominic Cervi at Tulsa so only a one year starter.
2008: Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Teamof the Year, Conference USA 1st Team.

Houston picks FW Marcus Tracy (Wake Forest):
Signed with Aalborg in Denmark.Tracy, a Herman Trophy Finalist and First Team All-American, is as good a striker prospect as has come out of the college game in a long time. The numbers are there, 13 goals and 10 assist this year to make him one of two players in NCAA to have double digits in both categories, but it’s the pure talent and upside that has him at the top of this list. At 6-1, 170, he has the size, speed, and athleticism of an Eddie Johnson with fantastic touch, ability to combine, wonderful work rate, and tremendous training habits. He’s as complete a package as you’ll see in the college system and MLS might not be able to sign him now after missing out on getting him post last year’s title run domination. He finished his career ranked in the top 10 in points (83), goals (30) and assists (23) at Wake Forest.

2008: All-American First Team, Soccer America First Team MVP, College Soccer News First Team, Top Drawer Soccer First Team, Herman F, Atlantic Coast Conference First Team.

2007: Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team

Thats the end of the draft--period. With the cut in roster slots they dropped the additional draft. As is most teams have drafted more players than they have open roster slots----and teams can now bring in any of the un-drafted players on trial.

RSL picks FW Futhi Bhembe (Alabama A&M):
Bhambe is from Swaziland and to be honest playing for the independent Alabama A&M there isn’t a ton of info on him. He’s top 5 in the nation this season in point per game and goals per game. Finished the year with 14 goals and 3 assists. He was also MVP of the Bradley Tournament. Originally he was listed as the first alternate for the MLS Combine but hasn’t been added despite the loss of Grella and Tracy.

Chicago picks MD Richard Jata (Campbell):
Lots of nifty moves but he tries to do to much. Sometimes gets in the way of his own team. Off the pace defensively and fouling to much. Could be amazing, or could be out of MLS in a month. A love/hate kind of player. An attacking mid or second forward, Jata is the kind of game changing college talent that dominates at the level Campbell play. Perhaps one of the most media savvy and hyped players in years, at least by his people, Jata will need to prove he can produce the electric performances against top tier talent at the MLS Combine. Scored a career-high 28 points in 2008 with 12 goals and four assists to lead the Atlantic Sun goals (0.71) and points (1.65) per game. Jata tied the Atlantic Sun record with seven game-winning goals. Over three years Campbell has a 20-1-1 record in games when Jata has scored. In only 57 career games, Jata collected 71 points (15th in school history) on 28 goals and 15 assists. Transferred to Campbell in 2005 after leading the talent rich Furman in scoring as a freshman in 2004 with 4 goals and 3 assists.

2008: All-American Second Team, Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, First Team.

    2007: Atlantic Sun First Team

    2006: Atlantic Sun First Team.

Colorado picks DF Michael Holody (Michigan):
A larger defender but with poor feet. Wants nothing to do with the ball. The 6-3 Holody is only the second All-American in the Wolverine program’s short history. Holody leaves MU as the program all-time leader in minutes played and his 9 goals get him into the top ten on their scoring list. A strong two way player in the college game, it will need to be seen if that offense translates to MLS. In addition to his two All-Big 10 nods, Holoday was named to the 2008 PDL Team of the Year for his play for the Michigan Bucks.

2008: All-American Third Team, College Soccer News Third Team, Big Ten First Team.

2007: Big Ten Second Team. PDL Team of the Year Michigan Bucks

    2006: Big Ten All-tourney team.

    2005: Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Columbus picks DF Chris Clements (Tulsa):
A big strong defender who was clearly playing hurt at the combine. College career says he might have something, but we can’t tell this week.

A sub-par year for Clements due to an early injury has him a little bit further down this list that he might have been with a clean bill in 2008. His return from injury coincided with Tulsa revival in the latter half of the year. An aggressive game reader with a big pro size body, Clements also has terrific feet for a large player. Clements is a three time All-Conference USA player and was a Third Team All-American in 2007. Out of the storied Dallas Texans club, Clements is also a former US U20.

    2008: Conference USA Second Team

2007: All-American Third Team, Conference USA First Team.

    2006: Conference USA Third Team

    And... we're done.

    Nicol's thoughts:

On Kevin Alston: “We didn’t expect him to be available when we made our first pick. I like defenders to be able to defend first and foremost and he can do that. We’ll see more of him on the other side of the ball once we get him into preseason, but right off the bat - in the defensive half - he’s as solid as a rock. He is a fierce competitor and wants to win at everything he does.”

On Ryan Maxwell: “We didn’t have him on our radar before the Combine, but everything he did there, he did well. After the Combine, people probably didn’t think he’d be available at number 15.”
