Dallas picks FW Brian Shriver (UNC): Predominantly a wide midfielder till this year, Shriver shifted up to forward and ripped off an amazing scoring season with fourteen goals and five assists to drive Carolina to the NCAA Final. While he earned a First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference nod as a striker; Shriver’s work rate, good finishing, solid crossing, determination, game reading, soccer smarts, and tenacity make him a viable pro prospect at wide midfielder or winger in the mold of a Brian Mullan. 22 career goals and 11 assists. 2008: Soccer America MVP First Team, Top Drawer Soccer Third Team, Atlantic Coast Conference First Team.
You think maybe we take a GK in the 3rd? Also, maybe take a flyer on one of the guys in Europe to lock down rights?
Castillo supposedly had a very good combine but he's still out there. Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe goes to crapids. We still have a few picks till were up again, but we may get a late steal
Colorado picks MD/FW Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe (George Mason): A real speedy runner at the forward spot. He hit the best two crosses of the whole combine with his left foot. I like him as a possible wide midfielder even though he didn’t play there.JJ, as he is called, led GMU in scoring this year and ranks in the top 10 in the Colonial Athletic Association in goals (9), assists (7) and points (25). Named the Most Outstanding Performer at the Colonial Athletic Association Soccer Championship with 4 goals and an assist in the GMU title run. Started his career at St Francis before transferring to GMU. 2008: Colonial Athletic Association First Team. NYRB picks D Jack Traynor (Notre Dame): A solid looking left back without the pace of Hertel or the upside of Wallace, but he does have above average game and a willingness to move forward. 3rd best left back here.A four year starter for the Irish with two goals and seven assist over his career as a left back. This season helped the Notre Dame defense hold opponents to a goal or less in eight of the last nine down the home stretch of the season. Traynor helped the Irish to two NCAA Quarter-final appearances in 06 and 07 as well as two straight Big East Regular Season titles. 2008: Big East Second Team. 2007: Big East Third Team. 2006: Big East Honorable Mention
I don't really know any of these guys but I do know this. If none of these guys can contribute right away and we don't bring in some outside talent somehow ... we're toast. We'll see if SN is some kind of genius or if he gets lucky sometimes.
Columbus picks DF Paul Gerstenberger (Boston College): A left back that tried to play hurt at the combine. Impossible to get a review of him. But he was average here even hurt and he’s left back so that’s worth something.A left back, Gerstenberger played 66 games in his BC career and scored 18 points. Primarily a starter only in his last two seasons, Gerstenberger earned All-Tourney honors at the 07 Atlantic Coast Conference Tourney with one goal and one assist.
going back to the plane... amazing. no major injuries. Everyone appears to be ok. What a great ending to what could have been an awful story.
3rd round started Ives - seattle takes Jared Karkas of Asuza Pacific with No. 31, first pick of the third round
There's a Karkas on the field, a carcas on the field, hi ho the derio a karkas on the field. Too bad, we'll probably never get to try that one.
Seattle picks DF Jared Karkas (Azuza Pacific) San Jose picks FW Quincy Amarikwa (UC-Davis): Hard nosed, gritty, fighter. Terrific athleticism and coordination but not top end speed. I had an epiphany about him that I wanted to share as I finally figured out who he reminded me of. Stay with me here… Not noticeably fast, nor tricky on the ball. A bit on the small side, but stocky and strong. When not near the ball is a bit static but will battle like hell when he’s working for the ball. Tenacious and a nuisance to defenders trying to play out. Not afraid of contact, will hit, fight, scratch, and claw to score and does it in buntches… He’s a young Carlos Ruiz. The trick is figuring out if he’s MLS Carlos Ruiz or just a college Carlos Ruiz. Anyone who says they know which is guessing.A terrific athlete who has a great burst, Amarikwa also has a real nose for goal. At 5-9 he’s a bit on the short side, but at 160 pounds has the strength to hold off bigger defenders. Exploded with 15 goals in his senior year to win the 2008 Big West Offensive Player of the Year award, Amarikwa ends his career with 31 goals. 2008: Top Drawer Soccer Third Team, Soccer America Second Team MVP, All-American Second Team, College Soccer News Second Team, Big West Offensive Player of the Year, First Team. 2007: Big West Second Team LA picks FW Josh Boateng (Liberty): A fast, slashing type midfielder or withdrawn striker. Likes to roam about and change the point of attack.A Ghana U17 and left, but another striker on the short side. Most likely a candidate to play wide in midfield, he was named a Third Team All-American as a midfielder. 13 goals and 6 assists this year to rank 12th in the nation in points per game (1.78) and 13th in goals per game (0.72). Boateng led the Big South in points per game, goals per game and was tied for first in game-winning goals with five. Started his career at Virginia Tech before transferring to Liberty. 2008: All-American Third Team, Big South First Team. 2007: Big South Second Team.
Toronto takes a flyer on FW Mike Grella (Duke): 3rd Degree source says Grella has not come to terms with MLS and also will be skipping the MLS Combine. He has a EU passport. The Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year, two-time Herman Semi-finalist, and two-time All-American. The only consistent scoring threat on the Duke team, Grella’s 36 points were triple that of any other Blue Devil this season, Grella still scores despite being the entire focus of the opposition defense. Grella has the rare talent of being able can create his own space to score. Grella has tremendous self confidence bordering on the edge of being ego, but has the numbers to back it up with a career 41 goals and 27 assists in the top tier Atlantic Coast Conference. A former US U18 and U20. Grella might be eligible for a EU passport through his Italian born parents, which makes him a threat to bypass MLS. 2008: All-American First Team, College Soccer News First Team, Top Drawer Soccer First Team, Herman Semi-Finalist, Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year, First Team. 2007: All-American Second Team, Herman Semi-Finalist. Atlantic Coast Conference First Team. 2006: Top Drawer Soccer First Team, Atlantic Coast Conference First Team 2005: Atlantic Coast Conference FT
So San Jose takes Quincy with their final pick, is he the answer to their scoring woes? Only two picks on the day, they go with Ring and Quincy.
Chivas pick FW Kyle Christensen (Denver): Christensen has led Denver in scoring the last two years, but is older than most seniors have gone on a Morman mission in 2005 and 2006. Three time First Team MPSF, bracketing his mission, and MPSF Player of the Year this season. Half his goals this year were game winner. 2008: Top Drawer Soccer Third Team, MPSF Player of the Year, First Team. 2007: MPSF First Team 2004: MPSF First Team. http://www.3rddegree.net/2009/01/2009-final-mls-superdraft-forward-rankings/
Is anyone surprised that Calum Angus, Jordan Seabrook, and Yohance Marshall are still available? And that Mike Grella's rights were taken before these guys?
