Two games played. Six goals scored by FCB. Landon has figured in three of them. Not bad.

it was a freekick by Bayern. An al wehda defender headed the ball in the air, the ball went back down. Donovan beat the other AW defender with physicality, he turned shoot and scored in the corner beating the keeper. Beauty of a goal.

Donovan is about 15 yards out with his back to goal. A high 50 / 50 ball comes in and he positions himself well to bring it down with a nice first touch with his foot, then he turns inside, to his left and drills it in hard and low with his right - a second defender closing in on his shooting foot.

Very difficult and well taken chance.

Yes, not too shabby at all.

If this trend holds up, by the time his loan is over, he'll probably have recorded several assists/goals.

Donovan should be able to put up nice numbers at a club like BM that is superior to most teams they play. Hell, anyone capable of scoring 20 for the Galaxy last year should have no trouble getting enough shots off at Bayern Munich to score plenty of goals.

I think not playing with Ribbery today had a negative impact on Lando (as it would on anyone). Ribbery draws defenders to him like flies and creates a lot of space for the other attackers.

Setting aside LD's goal today, you'd have to consider the first half of the first game to be LD's best, most comfortable-looking so far. Having that quality, penetrating midfielder to play off of will be a big benefit to him in the BL.

I read a report that Klinsmann had put the team through eleven training sessions in just two or three days in the lead up to the prior match, so the idea that many of the players were tired probably isn't too far off base.

I got the feeling that Donovan would have scored or created another had the match gone on another ten minutes. It took him about a half hour to get into the game, but he was excellent in the final ten minutes or so.

key point: nobody scores a goal like LD did by luck. Very few players can even try a play like that. It is pre-season but that was an eye-opener. Did you notice he got some congrats from team-mates with that play?

    From Bayern's web site:

"That was a nice goal, that will give him an additional boost", a pleased Klinsmann said.

I'd say Klinsmann knows a thing or 2 about nice goals :)
So far so good. Still in first inning of a 9 inning game. The real games are going to be so much more meaningful to whether or not he gets bought.

Bayern website gives Donovan credit for hitting the bar as well

It's going to be interesting to see how Donovan adapts to a super-sub role, assuming BM go into the second half of the season with their usual pairing of Toni and Klose up top.

This is a role Donovan is completely unaccustomed to. With BM's crowded fixture list, I'm sure he'll get some starts, and injuries can always be a factor, but I would imagine LD will be used in this capacity most of the time.

I have seen plenty of his matches, and he has usually been mediocre to bad. Sorry, but I am not a fan of his and never will be. OK, he's far from the worst defender I've seen, but I would expect that a team like Bayern could do significantly better.

Of course the goal was not luck. It was talent, but I'm sure there are way more, WAY MORE than a "few" players that can do that!

Also, I'm pretty sure the other players congratulated Donovan simply because he scored, not necessarily because of the "play" itself.

By the way, this isn't pre-season. It's called "winter pause" or "winter break".

If menopause gives you hot flashes, does winter pause give you cold ones?

Yeah, reading the descriptions here I was expecting much more than I saw with that goal. Nice play to shield the loose ball after the defensive miscue and he places it well. but that was nowhere near the wonder goal it seems some are saying.

He needed to get a goal and he got one. Good job and he's doing well. But, let's not make it out that he scored some wonder goal that all of Europe is going to be prattling on about for days.

The standard at a club like Bayern is high. That goal was nothing any of their other strikers haven't scored. It was a good play, but let's have a bit of perspective. It was nothign to win him a job outright. He will need more goals of that quality and better to be seen as a must purchase player by a club of this stature.
