As long as you are pulling for the US, you are welcome to hang out with the SoCal Brigade. Coming from LA (Latin America), we always have a at least a few in our number who are American of Mexican descent.

The Gringos try to refrain from saying F*** Mexico too often, but no promises.

I'm not finding anything lower than around $500.

    What airline is this on?

    Can you post a link?

Put Toluca under destination and they shuttle you to D.F. for free.

    Wow - good tip!

When you say D.F. are you referring to the Mexico City airport, or the city itself?

How long of a drive is it from Toluca to D.F.?

Well from what I understand it's the airport but it might make stops at a close by bus station or something. It's about a 30 minute drive from what I understand. It may not be the most convenient thing for some people but for the ones on a budget like me I definitely don't mind the drive. Plus I like to drive around in foreign countries.

He's lying. He says "F*** Mexico" like Catholics say "Thanks be to God" at Mass.

The LA to Tijuana to Mex DF route sounds cheap but a little too time consuming. The extra $200 for a RT flight from LA would probably be worth it, but that's just me.

I believe the Tijuana run would be best for the San Diego people, at least proximity wise.

    es verdad...

But since I'll be in Mexico proper, not Los Angeles, I will be doing my best to not insult the locals.

    When in Rome.

This is the ideal opportunity for anybody who wants to support the USA away. There are lots of ways to get to and from the DF, including overnight buses from the border (really comfortable, you leave in the evening and get to the DF in the morning, in time for the match, for about $90 each way). Direct buses also go from Dallas, and maybe Houston as well. Flying from TJ is the cheapest way to get to Mexico City from California. There are supposed to be shuttles to the TJ airport from San Diego.

There's really few hotels by the stadium, but you really wouldn't want to stay around there since there's nothing to do in the vicinity. Price has a direct relationship to quality. There are places where you can pay $25-$40 a night, but they aren't particularly quiet.

If someone was to orgainze something it might be buses from central parts in Centro/Zona Rosa to Azteca and back. Mexico has an infinite number of charter companies to do this. And you might be able to arrange preferential parking in the stadium lot. Easy off, easy on. It would be worth it.

I went to the last qualifier in Mexico City, as well as many other big, big matches in the Azteca and elsewhere. You can count on the Mexican authorities to do a good job of organizing and providing security. The last thing they want is a problem. They've cracked down on the ultras around the domestic league. Last US match there were 5,000 police on site. (Mexico is the ultimate big government state, and they can throw a lot of people at something on short notice). The only drag was that we had to wait at least half an hour until we were permitted to leave the US supporters' section, but that's pretty much standard around the world.

The crowd was fine. Of course they're going to throw beer at us and chant "Osama, Osma", but who cares? What do you think they're going to do?

Mexico City isn't more or less dangerous than any other big city. Of course if you hold yourself out as a target something can happen. Just don't get drunk out of your mind, don't carry anything you would regret losing, and stay out of suspicious taxicabs (especially the VW beetle ones). Remember you will need a passport to travel overseas even by land by the middle of next year, so get one now. Passports are really useful because if you lose it, the consular section in the Embassy (which I used to help run until just recently) can get you a new one the next business day because they have records of all issued passports available on-line. Some Spanish definitely helps. While you might encounter some malas tipos, most people will be thrilled to have you there, and will be super-helpful.

And if all else fails, just yell "arriba el Tri."

  19. If it helps your time budgeting and/or overall cost ...

If you need/want to take a several hour or overnite layover, let us Dallas AO contacts know (info on AO site) ... we'll take care of ya! AOs and friends-of-Dallas-AO (you know who you are!) especially welcome!

As long as you chant anti-Mexico players/NT stuff and not you know...Anti-Mexican and Mexico the actual country. I probably wouldn't care. I mean, one is ok...and the other.....not so much. I don't like it when fans of either country cross the line....since you know...I straddle both countries.

You'll probably hear less cheering for the Zetas in our section than Osama chants in the stadium; but on average both countries probably contain the same percentage of douchenozzles.

Zetas...they're probably not that clever. Although I'll ********ing laugh if they start yelling "INS" or something equally lame at Mexicans in Mexico. Sadly, theres someone clueless enough to actually do it.

Would people understand if we chanted the following?
    "CHAPULTEPEC! CHAPULTEPEC! CHAPULTEPEC!"

Or how about the first line of the Marine hymn over and over?
"From the Halls of Montezuma...From the Halls of Montezuma...From the Halls of Montezuma..."
