Doubtful. I've always been far more impressed with his ability to beat players off the dribble, strike a powerful shot first time and create shots off of passes played to him on the ground. There is no sense in reinventing the wheel here.

You also didn't read his post or mine. We are both talking about him being better in the air than Guile or Llorente.
No need to reinvent the wheel? How about becoming an all-around threat? What's wrong with that? I agree that he'll probably always be better at the skills you mentioned than he is at heading, but its as if you don't want him to be better or more versatile.

In all fairness Bravo is alone up top and no one to feed him balls. Guardado will help with that. Quit being a hater, I was actually rooting for Altidore but some of you here ruin it for me.

If you press too much, you can get burned by a one-two/wall pass and VR plays it as well as anyone.

Usually, it's better to keep an attacker in front of you, with little space - just enough not to get beaten on a dribble, yet not too far to allow a shot on goal.

He's more physical than either in the air or not.

My favorite play of his, when he received the ball with his back to the defender and near the sideline, he flipped the ball toward his partner, who was so surprised he fumbled the ball.

Memo to MLS - not a hint of a backpass in that situaiton. It was dribble, pass and move.

Supplanting Llorente? Get serious please. Josy had a good debut but please leave it at that.

By his own admission, Jozy is playing for a team that likes to play the ball on the ground. So you tell me why all of sudden you'd rather Villareal change tactics and start knocking in crosses? That's what I don't get. Jozy is on a team in a league where skillful play is emphasized. Develop his all-around game? Maybe it is better that he learn to develop his skills with the ball at his feet further, in a league that appreciates that type of play. It would certainly make him into a different type of forward than the US has ever had before. So, while I read and understood all of your posts, the fact remains that you don't join up with a team like Villareal to work on your headers.

Sorry, did I say Villareal should "change tactics"? That's what I don't get.

You are putting words in my mouth. You neither read nor understood anything I wrote. I didn't say that's why he should join a team like Villareal, to work on his headers.

Its not as if you can't get better at headers while concentrating most of your time on passing and foot skills.
Give me a break! If you have his size (which was clearly already a problem for the defense today) why not take advantage of it in the air when the option is there? Don't tell me they won't ever play crosses in because Villareal is such a great "skill" team. I saw them do it a few times today, particularly on set plays.

As an aside... heading is a skill. It doesn't seem like its one you respect, but it is a skill.

Sure, it's a skill, but Villareal didn't hire Altidore for his heading and probably don't care much about it. If he scores with his head, that's great and it's cream, but the bread and butter is his footwork, strength and ability to hold the ball while under a lot of physical pressure. The head goals I've seen him score with Red Bull were actually rather tricky, based on excellent positioning, movement and finesse, with power having little to do with them.

Picture of Jozy in action today

this is from marca.com. the caption reads : "the american forward came on in the second half and provided depth. His physical superiority over deportivo's defensive line was overwhelming".

literally, it says his physical superiority was 'insulting' :p, meaning i guess that he made them look bad.

One thing that I did see today, and it suprised me was Senna's service from dead balls. Last week, he struck a beautiful ball from 30 yards out, to take the lead. Today, his service was poor, and didnt find the head of a teammate once, and they had quite a few set pieces.

I have been watching Villarreal games since 2007/2008 season, and I have to say Llorente so far has sucked. (Even Tomasson was doing better than him)

Maybe he will find his way, but at this time he is s0-s0 at best

Actually it seems like you're just way too hung up on heading. Do you not see that Jozy is exception for the other attributes? I don't want another Brian McBride. The fact that he is mobile, can dribble and create a shot, has great determination and goes to goal exceptionally well just means a helluva lot more to me than whether he ever gets better at heading the ball. The US team has if anything been too reliant on crosses, long balls and headers. Believe me, getting on the end of a cross with one's head is not nearly as difficult as taking it off the volley with his foot. And we've already got plenty of players who can power headers on goal; but precious few that know how to one-time a ball on goal even when it isn't set up perfectly. You're just starting at it from the wrong end of the equation.

Was Llorente even in the game?

Turning to Jose, you can see that he has the potential to be a special player, even by La Liga standards. We shall see what happens, but in this game he showed:

    1. Dribbling ability -- several times he skinned La Liga defenders on the wing off the dribble.
    2. Field vision/passing ability - very easily could have had an assist in this game.

His shooting (though he had one nice shot that forced a tough save where it looked like he didn't have much of an opportunity) and tactical awareness could improve, but it was a good start. Of course, he will have to actually score to be a success in the long run.

Def a good debut for Jozy.....now every team in La Liga will know about his abilties, so he will be closley marked by defenders......(Deportivo after the first 15-20 minutes figured out how to mark Jozy)

And we will soon see how he handles the situation.............

It's the measure upon which any striker, American or otherwise, should be judged. I wish our national manager felt the same way.

Ultimately, Altidore is being paid to score. His future employment is directly correlated with his ability to do so.

Fantastic debut from him yesterday I have to say. Everything you could hope for as a Villarreal or USA fan.

Look, I agree with everything you say about Jozy and the US team except one big thing.

For some reason, you continue to read way too much into what i'm writing about wanting Jozy to improve that part of his game. I won't pretend to know why. I'll try not to put words in your mouth like you are doing to me.
You are way too hung up on the idea that somehow learning to head the ball better would hurt his development otherwise and that I would like him to do that instead of improving his ball skills and shooting. My point is that since he already has size and speed, why not be a better header of the ball in addition?

I like his willingness to take a snap shot almost as much as like his desire to drive straight at goal when he has the ball!

unless I saw Jozy's Doppelganger, Jozy just came from MLS and did very well. You really have to back off with your ignorant comments. You know nothing about soccer but you post here, fine.

You say that you're misunderstood and then repeat the same old argument. I'll try one more way to explain why this is largely irrelevant. The type of crossing/service that Jozy is likely to receive tends to be played in at a height, loft, position and angle so that it is possible to either trap or play the ball with his foot. They just aren't serving the majority of crosses as high balls into the box somewhere between the six and penalty spot.

He wouldn't have been picked if they didn't think he could play with his feet. And it is largely his development in this area that will see him sink or swim in La Liga. If he gets better, or not, at heading the ball, I think this will be due to physical maturity, not because he spends much, if any, time working on it in practice. Villareal is unlikely to change tactics to emphasize this type of play, either.

Edit: Finally, I would just ask that you explain why you think it is so important that he develop his heading ability? It seems to me he has a unique opportunity here to work on the aspects of his game that really do set him apart. IMO, heading just isn't a skill you spend much time on in practice.

I always thought Jozy was great with his head. I have seen him score on several powerful headers, including vs Mexico.

Jozy looked good out there. It was so much fun to watch him. Definitely a very good debut for him.
