And by looking at this, there will be at least one Brazilian semifinalist. Either Fluminense or my team SPFC - and there's a good chance this will be an all-Brazil semifinal. I dont' see Santos being eliminated by America; they'll have home field, and this is not a team likely to allow for an upset against a weaker team on home ground.

Flamengo did not take America seriously. Brazilian news sites said today that the players admitted they disrespected America. The sad thing is, they played better for stretches of the match.

In other words, arrogance was their undoing. I doubt Santos will make the same mistake.

I guess Niembro and Closs were accurateeek to point that it looked like River players weren't passing the ball but they were like getting rid of it.

It's true that Pezzota made mistakes, but apart from the Silvera-Tuzzio incident i think there wasn't any major mistake after the 2-0, and even with that it doesn't explain how River gets tied at their own ground against a team of 9 players, and San Lorenzo played so-so overall.

What do you think of a brazilian semi-final and an argentine semi-final? The brazilian one is probable in my opinion, but the argentine one, i have my doubts, i see Boca defeating Atlas, but i don't know about San Lorenzo, first of all they'll be missing some important players their 2 starting central backs, Mendez(injury) and Bottinelli(suspension).

Also, nice mistake by Carrizo in the pass almost cost River a third goal.

 

If I remember correctly we were about 20 minutes from advancing to the semifinals with a goal from Daniel Ruben Bilos when the defense broke down (surprisingly!) and gave away 2 goals in the final minutes of the game. Against Santos. In their stadium.



edit: Crap. I just realized. Kleber is now with Santos. Bona fide idol with America (one of my favorite players to ever don the yellow) facing off against rising star Salvador Cabanas. What a match up!

 

On one side you have a team with lots of (regional) history which has never made it this far in the Libertadores; they were the best in the opening round and they're hungry. On the other you have a mix of veterans and newcomers who've played disjointed soccer but who have Libertadores experience (they held their own and nearly won in Uruguay and won with justice yesterday).

Experience counts for a LOT in the Libertadores, and SPFC will not be intimidated by playing in Maracana stadium. I say SPFC in the semifinals.

 

Yes, that was deplorable for a first-division team from a league as competitive as Argentina's. Had that gone in, I think Carrizo would've needed police protection on his way out of the Monumental.

BTW, is this Carrizo related to an older Carrizo who made a name as a goalkeeper in the Argentine league in the 1960s?

 

Last comment for the night:

The elbow strike which reduced Sao Lourenco to 9 men was childish and idiotic, and that player was fortunate his team came back to score two goals. More than the goal Abreu eventually scored via the resulting PK, the moment that elbow flew I knew it was an ejection and that Rio da Prata now had 2 more men.

That's when I thought, "OK this is over, Rio da Prata vs. LDU." But I'm glad I kept watching... as the FOX Espanol guys said, this game will not be forgotten soon.

 

The one you talk about is Amadeo Carrizo, and no, they have the same last name but they are not related.

 

They're differente type of players.
I don't see how you can compare them.

 

I'm not really surprised that both Colombian teams are out. I did expect more from Cucuta, specially because Colombian clubs tend to do well against Brazilian clubs.
