Tryouts for the PR national teams for various ages for men and women will be held in Fullerton, California on April 19, 2008 and in San Juan Capsitrano, California on April 20, 2008. Candidates will need to present documentation of their Puerto Rican descent. A coach from Puerto Rico is flying in today April 18, 2008 to observe the candidates. For details contact artstrek_98@juno.com.

I would think somewhere in the Northeast, Chicago, or South Florida(where they have large Puerto Rican populations) would make a better location.

Keep an eye out for this kid:

    Jose Sandoval.

He just helped lead the Bisontes of AMA (my former high school) to the "Puerto Rico High School Athletic Alliance" league title. I bet you we'll hear about him in the future.

Is AMA a military school in San Juan/Bayamon? It sounds familiar. I think my nephew went there.

    Prende la fiebre del ‘soccer’.

La afición al deporte más practicado en el planeta al fin está alcanzando a Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is taking its first baby steps to buid a national futbol program. The challenge will be to build a system that is merit driven in choosing players and coaches and not politically driven. Once there is some success the wolves will be out looking for a share...

PR should have definitely made Florida a stop along with California for scouting, good amount of Rican descendants playing ball here.

thank you, i have been trying to find out how to even try out for the PR team. i'm a very competitive midfielder. I lead my team in assists and do make some goals but i like making good crosses and setting my team mates up for goals.

Hi every one, great to see there is enthusiasm and motivation in P.R. for the sport. Proud to say i'm one of you guys.

Well said Artstrek98, Even tho the federation has been here since 1938, it is now that is truly beginning for our generation and I don't think that it will stop any time soon. There is a lot of money here and if you look at the young kids and teenagers playing there is some really good growing talent here. I mentioned on another thread that the game with Honduras will be great for PR even if how some people think will loose. It all depends on how at this point. I also can't wait for RIVER PLATE to to come up to the USL league to have that very well needed rivalry on the island. Futbol can only go up from here in PR in 5 years, maybe less, PR WILL be a competitive team in the professional and national level.:D

Dominican newspapers are reporting that argentinian powerhouse River Plate will organize soccer summer camps in Bayaguana, DR

If PR and DR can produce world class baseballplayers, so as well at least very good soccer players

Thanks to River Plate for lending the needed helping hand

PR produces great players and competitive national teams in every single sport lots of people in the island care about. Boxing, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball. Once more people start getting into football like it's already happening we'll start seeing some good players from that as well.

Some are already out there like I have mentioned here before. They just need to actually be driven to stay with the sport and try to succeed at it.

A good start would be to continue to scout the huge PR population in the US(the way Mexico does,) there already have been several Boricuas several good enough to make the USMNT.

Volleyball? While I agree that Puerto Rico has produced a lot of good athletes in almost every sport it play, I always used Volleyball as the example that it isn't always the case. While Volleyball has always been one of the top sports in PR, I don't think the results are there to show it. I think PR qualified for the first time to the voleyball world cup last year and voleyball has been huge in PR since I remember.

True historically they haven't had a lot to show but recently it's changed. They finished second in the 2007 Pan-American Cup and second in the NORCECA Volleyball Championship thus qualifying for the WC.

At least they qualified for it and had a decent showing. They finished 6th which was not a bad showing especially if you consider that the other nations competing were all big countries with big populations. So it does say something about the quality of the national team and that they are competitive which was my original statement. At least recently.

Yeah but even after all that recent sucess, Voleyball has been big in Puerto Rico for a long time, ever since I've remembered and the results haven't been there. I remember both male and female team constantly losing to countries which I don't considered to be big voleyball countries. They may be big populations but how big is the sport in those countries? I think you are right about PR athletes in the other sports but Voleyball to me has been the example of not always being the case. And although Puerto Rico can produce top athletes, and has done well in those sports but besides the case of Basketball, most of the sports aren't big sports in many countries (and of course no sport has a bigger pool in the world as soccer) and so the competition is tough. I now PR can do well in the sport a, I just don't see the "we've done well in other sports" that necesarily means PR will do well in this sport.

Of course not. But so far we've proven that we can create competitive national teams in every other sport we care about (regardless of historical results right now PR is a competitive team in Volleyball) so I think we have a decent shot if people actually care of creating something in soccer as well. Of course it will take some time but the seeds are being planted. We'll have to wait and see.

As I've said many times before there are already talented young players coming out of high schools and local academies like Fraigcomar (we can look at people of PRican decent living in the USA like Antonio said but personally I prefer to look at what we have in the actual island even if it takes longer to establish.). I've played there and been witness to them, remember I mentioned Andres Cabrero here before anyone knew who he was and he's playing for the NT and Islanders now. The problem is to maintain the interest in them.

Kids like Andres since they were young said this is what I wanna do for the rest of my life and dedicated themselves to that. We need more kids like that. And judging by the article I posted not too long ago we're off to a decent start.

This is very true, We qualified for the very first time to the World Cup in 2007. But there is A LOT of talent playing in the best teams, from the best leagues in Europe and that has to count for something. It is also true that volleyball has been to a certain amount "big" in the island but not really, it has it's seasons, specially when the national team plays is that you will see a big interest for the sport. Outside of that is not that big. I can tell you that there has never been such a boom for any sport in the island such as futbol and that can tell you as Dr. Know mentions that in the near future there will be some magnificent talent directly out of the island.
