Do you consider Redcoats one of our nicknames?

Redasses might be a better name for them after the start they're off to.

Oh, and btw, what writers--amateur or otherwise--would use "redcoats" to look up the team if that's not the team's name? (Unless they're idiots, of course.)

A poll like this will provide shit--certainly not proof of anything. Most people call TFC the Reds. Like it or lump it.

 

No, in terms of nickname the only one that I would consider to be a true nickname is "The Reds" or "Reds" whichever you prefer.

Commentators use it, the players use it. I have never heard anyone refer to TFC as 'The Redcoats'

 

Yes. Redcoats is a fine nickname for a team playing on the site of an April 27, 1813 battle between American and Canadian forces (wearing Redcoats). The blood of several hundred Redcoats is soaked into the soil where BMO field is built.

BTW, just watched the CHIVAS/RSL game and saw a banner of the Union Ultras with the words "RED OR DEAD".

Seems to me that Reds is not unique and is so generic that it can mean TFC or Chivas or Liverpool or Fire etc...

Redcoats is TFC and noone else..

 

The only true Reds is Cincinnati Reds and Liverpool. TFC Reds? Oh sure that's the colour of their uniforms... and what else? Reds belongs to so many teams that it says nothing...

"Come on You Reds".... that's pretty lame don't you agree. That's like "Let's go Buffalo!!"

If you have never heard of anyone referring to TFC as Redcoats then you've never read the Red Patch Boys Forums.

 

If someone titled a post 'Toronto FC demolish the Galaxy' or 'TFC demolish the Galaxy' then you would certainly know that they were referring to Toronto FC.

 

BTW I like "Blizzard" so much more than "Reds"... I went to a couple of their games. I don't identify with someone else's nickname. I don't feel like sharing Reds. It feels like I'm a pretender. Like "Inter Toronto"....bah!

So many sports teams have derived their names from the history of the town that they play in.

 

I ran a poll on the RPB site and roughly 25% of respondents preferred Redcoats OVER Reds. That doesn't count the fact that the other 75% probably would acknowledge that Redcoats is a legitimate alternative nickname.

At first Redcoats sounded funny to me too, but it's like Scotch. At first it stings and tastes like crap, but as you get used to it you learn to appreciate it.

As an executive member of the Red Patch Boys, I can say without some measure of authority that the term "Redcoats" has been used sparingly as a nickname for Toronto FC. The term has more often been applied to the travelling supporters of the club, but rarely in reference of Toronto FC itself.

Whether people like it or not, "The Reds" has been used extensively by both an overwhelming segment of the fans and media alike when reffering to Toronto FC. It's obvious that you would like to refer to the team as Redcoats yourself, but when you post threads such as this which create and artificially-inflated sense of interest, you're likely to create more confusion than anything else.

 

I rest my case. Time will tell. The Redcoats will come out of the woodwork. Just remember that not everyone wants to stick their neck out and voice their opinion because they will be ridiculed. Look at the poll numbers,

IMO it seems that TFC's unofficial nickname is the "Reds". Do I like it? HELL NO!

Admittedly it gives me a sense of stealing someone else's nickname. Reds makes me cringe the same way as if we were nicknamed the Cottagers, the Red Devils or Nerorossi. I just don't like the idea of using someone else's nickname. It seems as contrived as Real Salt Lake.

Think of it this way...if you were overseas and someone asked you what club you supported and said the Reds there is no chance in hell they would ever take you for a TFC fan. That alone speaks volumes.

Calling TFC the reds is an unoffical nickname and we should never have an official nickname. Man Utd are referred to as the REDS all over Manchester unoffically. I know, I lived there.Even the papers.

At Usector, I'd be willing to bet that Redcoats would get less than 10% of a vote.

 

C'mon buddy, relax and enjoy the season. Don't fret, don't cringe. It's just a nick we're using now for lack of anything better. Our boys play in red kits, they're the Reds--what could be more natural, less contrived? As the team takes root and establishes an identity in the league, perhaps a more unique name will evolve. Like The Hogs. Toronto is, after all, Hogtown. And we've got the players and the style to reflect that name: Marshall, Harmse, Brennan, Wynne, Samuel, Robbo. We're The Hogs!

Gee yeah, that happens to me all the time! (Speaks volumes indeed!) Really, why would anybody with a clue say Reds in that situation without qualifying? Surely if you were in UK they'd be asking about a Premiership side, wouldn't they? There again, if they were asking about your home side you'd have a golden opportunity to educate them about the mighty TFC. Or you could just say you back The Hogs.
