MLS Expansion Draft Takes Place Nov. 21 San Jose Earthquakes to select 10 players; List of available players included below NEW YORK (Monday, November 19, 2007) – Major League Soccer will hold the 2007 MLS Expansion Draft on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. ET. The League’s 14th team, the San Jose Earthquakes, will begin to take shape following the 10-round draft. Listed below are the details regarding the League’s expansion draft, and also included the list of protected players submitted to the League by the 13 MLS teams. San Jose may not claim more than one player from any given team in MLS, and three teams will not have a player taken in the expansion draft. At the conclusion of the Expansion Draft, results will be posted on MLSnet.com and teams may resume trading. The Kansas City Wizards have protected the following players: Davy Arnaud Jimmy Conrad Nick Garcia Michael Harrington Jack Jewsbury Eddie Johnson Carlos Marinelli Kurt Morsink Scott Sealy Sasha Victorine Kerry Zavagnin MLS Expansion Draft Rules Senior Roster • Teams may protect 11 players between their Senior and their Developmental Roster. • If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2007, he will still be considered part of the Team’s Senior Roster. • If a Team protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate a new budget number for the player as in previous years. • If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Senior Roster, but his Team will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play. • Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a No-Trade clause in his contract in which case the player must be protected. Developmental Roster • Players on a Team’s Developmental Roster, other than Project 40/Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2007 season, will be part of the expansion draft. • Project 40/Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2007 season are automatically protected (teams do not have to use a protected slot on them) • If San Jose selects a Developmental Player it must offer him a Senior Roster position and he must be on San Jose’s Senior Roster as of Roster Compliance Date. International Players • Teams may make available no more than one Senior International player. A player shall be considered a Senior International if he will be a Senior International in 2008 (e.g., a 2007 Youth International who becomes a Senior International in 2008). • For purposes of this expansion process, for US-based teams, any non-domestic US player would count as an International and for Toronto FC, any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian player would count as an International. Maximum Player Loss • Once a player has been claimed from a Team’s non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players. Right to Renegotiate • San Jose will have the right to renegotiate a drafted player’s salary (either up or down) without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous Team a right of first refusal. Discovery Priority • San Jose shall have priority on the opening day of the signing period with respect to USL players playing professionally in the USL first or second division. I would think that too, but with the possible raise in the number of foreign slots, I could see SJ possibly going after Colombano. Or even a young player like Hohlbein.
These are the 10 I would choose Sala Petke Gros Waibel Burciaga Vagenas Dorman Curtin, Jim Merlin Williams
this is why i HATE the mls. if someone tries to take el gato away i will personally go down to san jose and drag him back, dye his hair and give him a new identity to allow him to keep playing for the wiz. oh yah and i can see colombano getting picked too, maybe over jose because of his high salary as well.
If Hartman is picked, I will seriously cry. I would really hate to see Colombano too. I will likely have a party if Burciaga goes. Don't get me wrong, he has his moments, but I would rather not deal with the conundrum of "I wonder whose team Burciaga is going to play for today?"
The simpliest answer is we have a 1 year option left to be exercised and if we don't protect him then SJ can grab him. If he doesn't end up somewhere abroad then we would give him up for absolutely nothing. That would rank up there with the, old no-ties shootout with a game clock, as one of the all time bonehead decisions in the history of the league.
It is just possible that El Gato may have informed the Wizards that he doesn't intend to return in 08. I assumed at the time that's why the league selected him as an honorary All-Star along with Cobi and Eddie Pope. What happens if SJ selects a player who subsequently retires?
Hartman wont get picked. If San Jose wants an older-experienced keeper they will take Pat Onstad instead.
It's probably a bluff, but I feel better about our chances to find a solid keeper than I do a solid starting LB. I'm fine with the fact that they think Burciaga isn't the answer, but if I was Harrington's agent, I'd be looking for options elsewhere if the answer is to convert him fulltime.
how much money colombano makes?? how much do you think he actually makes? i think he would have a better career if he moved to SJC...
Not very much I'm sure. He was playing second division ball in Argentina. It's not like we snatched him from River Plate or something. Who is SJC?
