Welcome to the Hillsbrough International pool. http://news.sky.com/skynews/picture_gallery/0,,30100-1272393,00.html
Not for a Wednesday fan I hope they get it all sorted out before the season starts, and that the undersoil heating system hasn't been damaged. It's actually been pretty horrific weather-wise in Sheffield these last couple of days. Torrential rain, most of the northern half of the city under anything between six inches and five FEET of water (including, obviously, Hillsborough...), 3 people dead, thousands in evacuations centers, thousands more with no electricity, people having to be rescued from the tops of buildings by helicopters, villages threatened by the possibility of a dam bursting. I'm glad I live in California now!
I know its been horrendous, its a real shame about Hillsborough, I'm sure it will be insured. Its been like that on a smaller scale in Bradford, with roads and rail damaged. Nightmare
The population density makes it a lot more serious, than if that was in the US. Our older buildings drains and reservoirs etc aren't designed for this type of weather, for example our cellar is now 4 feet deep in water and we live on top of a hill. In the valley bottom, the trainline and roads are blocked. Its all a matter of perspective.
And we're off! First friendly today - 3-0 at The Shay. Halifax aren't huge opposition, but still... Now they're off to Holland for three matches there. Excited yet?
Excited, obviously, by the start of a new season, especially if we can build on the superb run we had in the final few months of last year. As few thoughts: Frankie Simek should be better than ever after WINNING the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the USA in the summer... we have two good, promising keepers in Rob Burch and Lee Grant... glad to have Steve Watson join us for real as opposed to on loan... shame we missed out on getting Billy Sharp from Scunthorpe... sad to see Steve McLean go, he's been a great servant to the Owls... Other than that, I'm looking forward to it all. Sheffield derbies are back, which are always good. I think the playoffs are well within our reach.
So, what do we make of the latest episode of the long-running soap opera, All My Owlets? (Sorry.) http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_wed/6908681.stm Dave Allen seems to be busily burning any bridges he might have had left to the fans. Calling a press conference to announce the status of a takeover, and using it to say "there's no takeover", and slagging off the supporters and the local press, is beyond bizarre.
At least Wenesday will still be a proper club when Leeds fold all together soon. Can't wait for that we all hate leeds, we all hate leeds SCUM!
We might be signing Patrick Kluivert. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_wed/6912404.stm Whoa!
So here we are... hours away from the kickoff of the new season! First game is a trip down to Portman Road for a clash with Ipswich, then its off to Rotherham for a midweek Carling Cup clash. It's seemed like ages since last season ended... I'm full of optimism for 2007/08 though, hopefully we can start stronger than we did last year and maintain the end-of-season from from 06/07. New signing Franny Jeffers up front with Burton/Clarke/Tudgay, depending who's fit. Steve Watson giving his experience to the back line. Frankie Simek continuing the form he showed for the USA at the CONCACAF Gold Gup. Wade Small (hopefully) continuing his astonishing pre-season form. Chris Brunt playing well when he comes back from suspension. A (hopefully) good new keeper in Lee Grant. Up-and-coming youngsters like Rocky Lekaj and Tommy Spurr. I predict an 8-0 opening day win for the Owls, and then 12-0 over Rotherham in the Cup! But, in all seriousness, I can see us challenging for the playoffs again. Oh, and we didn't sign Kluivert.
I'd love to see a playoff run, but in all honesty I'll be perfectly happy with a safe mid-table spot. The squad looks a little thin from here. Glad to see the season starting again in any case!
I'm not trolling, but to get into the playoffs I wouldn't be 3-0 down after twenty five minutes against Ipswich.
. Not got out of stadium yet and the bloody Tranmere announcer is too bitter at our comeback to read the classifieds. What did it finish? Hopefully if you lost its a blip. YORKSHIRE!!!
the defense is so awful, and for laws to have gone the entire summer without addressing it is ludicrous. we need a strong and mobile centerback, and a good, organizing keeper. if we can bring in a couple squad-changing loan signings, we can bounce back from this horrid start. it's not like we're much worse off at this point than we were last year. still, at least we're not in league 1 ... leeds.
Better turn it around quick or we'll be passing you on our way up this season. Don't forget we are only on loan to League One, we should come straight back up when we get our fifteen points back from the FL, or even if we don't. I think Wednesday have failed to replace the sold players, and it falls to the management to get them to January till they can get people in, and still be in a decent league position.
thank god! 1-0 over hull. jeffers finally gets off the mark and we actually have a clean sheet. can we keep kavanagh for the rest of the season... please?
The relief at Hillsborough must be enormous. Sounds like the fans were right behind them against Hull. Makes a change to hear that after so many defeats for a club. Wonder what the worse ever start to a league campaign has been ?
Things are looking up since we last saw a post here. 5-0 against Southampton was a tasty result and we're well clear of the bottom. It's sounding more like this is the team that was supposed to challenge for (ssh!) a top-six spot. Me, I'll settle for not stinking the league out.
