Hi Guys, I have always wondered why there is a team called Go Ahead Eagles in the dutch football league system, is there anyone who knows the story behind this team from Deventer, why did they change from Be Quick to Go Ahead?
With the introduction of professional football on a larger scale in Holland in the 1960s, Go Ahead Eagles was formed as a combination of two amateur clubs, one called Go Ahead and the other the Eagles. Similar scenario as FC Twente. That's all I know about it, sorry.
Cheers Johan, as always I can rely on you with good information! Are Go Ahead a team from the same region as Twente?
it's a little west of enschede - former star marc overmars recently took a technical position at the club
You're welcome! Twente is a historical region that lies in the province of Overijsel. Deventer is not in Twente but is in the same province, it's about a 45 minute drive from here. Heracles (set to be promoted to the Eredivisie) is just a stone's throw away from us however, and also in the Twente region.
I must admit Johan, I love the Overijssel area - my aunt had a farm outside of Heino. Taking the sneltrein to Zwolle and switching to the small little diesel that runs through Heino (and Ommen I believe) was always a highlight of visiting. We still have friends that live in Deventer. Also had a good friend when I lived in France who was from Twente. Just goes to show that not all Amsterdammers are focused in their own city, etc. etc...
Well that's nice to hear! It's not a bad place to live really, and as long as you don't put on airs and drink loads of Grolsch you'll fit right in.
I know this a bit of an old topic but hey, someone's actually interested in my favorite little club! I'm impressed. Here's some additional information. The reason why Go Ahead changed it's name from Be Quick is because that name was already taken by another club so they had to change it. "Be Quick" is a silly name and "Go Ahead" is even sillier, but they must have thought it was a translation of dutch "Voorwaarts" meaning "Forward," like they say in the army. The addition "Eagles" came in 1971, when the amateur and professional branches split. The amateur branch went on under the name Go Ahead, the professionals added the word "Eagles", inspired by the name of the stadium "de Adelaarshorst," meaning "eagle's nest." Adding it was an idea from welshman Barry Hughes, the coach who later would turn into a very silly dutch showbiz celebrity when he launched the utterly ridiculous carnaval song "Ik wil op mijn kop een kamerbreed tapijt" in the eighties. I never really managed to get that rotten tune out of my system completely. Anyway, Go Ahead used to be one of Holland's best clubs back in the amateur days, winning the dutch championship in 1917, 1922, 1930 and 1933. They also were the first club with a boarding school for talented youth, so lots of professional players have started their career in Deventer. Biggest rivals are FC Zwolle, playing a bit north of Deventer, and it's a local derby as well as a battle between a club with its roots in the working class (Go Ahead) and a middle class club (Zwolle). Right now the club is in shambles, it's living in the past and probably would have been relegated to the amateurs if that had been possible. The problem is bad management, the club never lost it's loyal fanbase though. I'd say, whenever you're in the neighbourhood don't hesitate to visit the stadium, it's old but has charm and we need all the support we can get, dammit
doing very well these days. going for mpromotion ans almost knocked champions PSV out of the cup in eindhoven (3-2)
A fan of the mighty Eagles myself for many a season now. Tend to produce some decent players over the years including Jan Kromkamp. The playoffs can't come soon enough!
I hate to make me sound even older but my dad played for GO AHEAD in the late 1940's He was born in 1922 and played on the under 18 Oranje just before the war and joined GO AHEAD afer the war--played for them for a couple of years then went to Phillips--I guess PSV now--was officially an employee of Phillips since they were still "amateurs" but spent most of his time either mowing lawns or other menial stuff so he wouldn't be too tired for practice which was right after work until he moved to Canada in 1952 All his memories of those teams and times after the war were extremely positve
And the reason they named FC Twente is because their budget was only Twenty dollars.......... (and still is to this day)
if that is the case, I recon the entire world would be trying to hire the staff of FC Twente. name me 1 club that wouldnt want such a great selection of players for only 20 dollars.
It was just a pun on his part, not a very original one but there you have it. Anyway, did you people all know that AZ's Demy de Zeeuw also is a product of the GA Eagles youth academy just like Marc Overmars.
The ground (Adelaarshorst) is definitely worth a visit. GA Eagles had some great support back in the day. Don't know how it is now.
It's a great old-fashioned rambling sort of stadium right smack in the middle of a working class neighbourhood, the sort of stadium we all used to have. They still have a small group of very passionate fans who regularly get involved in punch-ups with Zwolle fans. I like the Eagles, they're my second favourite Jupiler league club.
gotta say that this was one of the classier things that I've seen in sports...Go Ahead Eagles deserve a spot in Europe for more than just "fair play" http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/sto...r-mother-61st-minute-tribute-nac-breda-042916
Mael Corboz's odyssey in the professional soccer ranks has now landed him in the Netherlands where he is helping Go Ahead Eagles make a push for promotion to the Eredivisie. The midfielder, who was born in Mobile, Alabama, comes from a family of soccer players as his father, Michel, played semi-professionally in his native France before moving across the Atlantic Ocean to work on his postdoctoral research at the University of South Alabama. http://www.yanks-abroad.com/content...XsK2eyJ-n-l7two1MV_TyXxk305GsX7wuSNRLiu8vVJPA
