where one lives and the water source makes a huge difference on the taste of ones mate.. as well as how the water is made hot. If it boils one has allready destroyed the water as it should only reach 90 not 100 degrees. Hard water makes mate less bitter , therefore in Uruguay especially they like argentinas most bitter mates due to the fact that the less bitter brands become bland quicly due to their water. So if Rosamonte works for you in California it does not mean that I will like in say Denmark. I here in Canada like Tranquera and Amanda when I can get it... the only brand I found to be junk all over is Cruz de Malta. And a mate should be really drunk out of a gourd mate with a bombilla and hot water around 80 t0 90 degrees in temp for the full taste and pleasure of a real Argie mate.
Argie mate ? you mean Gaucho mate... and for my money i'll take Nobleza Gaucha All day long at $4 bucks a bag , con O sin Palo is entirely up to you..
No I dont since Brazilian, Parguyan, and Uruguyan cow handlers are also called gaucho's and their mates are different... in fact the portenos drink their mate usually with sugar.. so I should hae said real Misionero or correntino mate then
Ok...the use and misuse of terms is making my Argentine blood boil..... 1. Yerba - refers to the green stuff, the leaves (not that green stuff....joker) 2. Mate - refers to the cup looking container where you put the yerba in can be wood, metal, but the best is made of calabaza and must be cured - it can also refer to the drink as in "vamos a tomar mate" 3. Bombilla - is the straw device through which you drink mata, usually stainles steel There is a difference betwee Mate and Mate Cocido. Mate - refers to the traditional method using the mate, yerba, bombilla, and water Mate Cocido - is made like a tea (and as someone else said, you can make it in you coffee maker)
quick story, im riding the train to NYC, and i see a guy with a termo y el mate, im like this mofo is probably uruguayan, so i ask the guy, listen to this, they guy was born in Ohio, he is not even spanish, he went to argentina and uruguay to study spanish, he loved the culture and picked up the mate thing, he goes everywhere with un termo y el mate. only in america right?
El mate tiene que ser amargo, como la vida y el tango. Aunque cuando era un pibe lo tomaba con azucar.
Just went to Manena's last week. Loved the empanadas and the alfajores were damn good too. Do you know of any Argentine places in Austin? I'll be moving there in April.
Aguante el gran Syd (pensar que conoci la casa de Cambridge donde supo pasar sus ultimos dias un ya mas terrenal Roger Keith Barrett) y el Pirata que esta noche le damos clase a a los amargos! I bet no one can beat this: 250 grs. of Yerba Mate Cruz de Malta= £ 2.00 (about $4), UK price. Such a rip-off but still enjoyable!
I'm currently in a far North Dallas burb called Plano. I work in Dallas though for one more week and then I am being transferred to Austin. Do you know the area?
Ft Worth has pretty nice places but it just never exploded the way Dallas did. Not saying Dallas growing the way it did was good. I'm moving to Austin for a reason. I lived a long time in NYC and to me it's way more mellow than Dallas.
I love yerba also That CBSe mate is the worst taste like medicine Cruz Malta and Nobleza Guacha are the best ones for me. I rarley drink it because it is so dam hot here in Miami that i'd rather be drinking something else. But it does the body good. Mate with biscochitos de grasa, perfect combo.
I like Amanda since my uncle grows the mate for them. And my cousin is married to the grandson of the founder , they live in Apostoles up in Misiones!!
My grandfather used to own a finca in Apostoles, his brother still does but I think they grow soya now since its more profitable. They were part of an Ukrainian/Russian colony of immigrants that settled there after right before WWII. Man, I used to run crazy wild there as a kid, Misiones is a beautiful place but I haven't been there in well over 15 yrs.
Don't you drink terere? I know it's an acquired taste, kinda like sugar (which I hate with my mate), but I tried it and it isn't that bad. I wanna say we used pineapple juice.
I've dranked it before,it is actually pretty good but not used to it and really never stuck with it ever since I drank some way back and when I did try it it was with lemon juice instead of pineapple.
Mmmm, mate is amazing. Along with alfajores, empanadas, asado, chimichurri, and basically everythihg we serve.
I love yogur bebible!! I wish I could find it here in the States, I would drink it by the litro. It's like yogurt but you can drink it... hum delicious!!! You shouldn't drink it with Mate.
Yes yogur bebible is the bomb ! I didn't have it with mate like together maybe like within an hour in between but still, killed me. Never again.
Che IllRod, I was born in Vicente Lopez, but my childhood was spent until the age of 8 in Alem and Obera, did you get to know these towns?? Also it is a little known fact that Che Ernesto Guevara was born in Misiones in a town called Monte Carlo!!
