I can't wait to see the 25-page topic whenever this one gains steam....

Even if Henry would come to the US at this point in his career, I don't think there is any way in hell that even Red Bull would be willing to fork over the $30m+ transfer (article estimates £25m which is around $45)that it would surely take to land him over one of the Spanish giants, plus the massive yearly salary he will command. We're probably talking a $80m investment....how much is that stadium costing? ;)

Check back in 3-5 years, after he's had some time at Barcelona or Madrid...he's one of the few forwards who I think could still dominate in his mid-30s, so I wouldn't complain if he came in a few years....when we inevitably sell Jozi to a European team for the $50m he'll be worth. :p

Why does that article have to come out...just why? Now I get to thinking of the possibilities. It could be like the Becks deal, have him come in the summer. My head hurts.

The more I think if that thing of cashign in on Henry is true....it is all up to Henry. Because Red Bull will most likely be waiting their with cash

The problem with a Henry signing...

Is do the dollars add up?

In the Beckham deal, AEG is on the hook for 9.6m a year.

But you can rationalize that thru increase ticket sales, increased ticket prices, new jersey sponser + Asia tour. You can recoop that number.

If you pay $40m for Henry- you are $40m in the hole. How do you make that up? You still have to pay him $7-10m a year in salary.

I am all for Red Bull dropping $40m on Henry- believe me- if they want to do it.

But even having Henry as a spokesman for Red Bull, I don't see any way Red Bull ever get that sunk cost back.

That's why 'bang for buck' scenarios like Rivaldo or Denilson or possibly Requilme (although there the transfer fee might not make sense either) are much more likely, IMO.

Even Zidane would cost no transfer fee, so you can pay him a lot more, etc.

From a team perspective, a playmaker type (Requilme) would make the most sense to me. That's your big hole. You swapped a AM (Guevarra) for a DM/holding (Reyna) basically.

Sorry golazo68 I beg to differ...RBNY dumped a good player who clearly never fitted in with an excellent one that will help the team gel....

If RBNY signs Henry, I'll buy season tickets (esp. since my girlfriend is French). There's no way it'll happen at this point in Henry's career, though. I can see Arsenal beginning to think about selling him; Henry's around 30-y-o, which is long in the tooth for an Arsenal player (I'm being halfway facetious here, as Bergkamp stuck around waaaaaaay past his sell-by date, but they did offload Vieira and Pires, who are still good players).

Anyway, I don't see it being Henry; if Arsenal sell him, he's going to a big-name club.

Who knows whats in his head, maybe he thinks it is time to come to America, maybe not. I may (strongly against my better judgment) have to develop a rooting interest for Arsenal in the champions league if that is what he wants to accomplish.

Henry would be amazing. I am in L.A, I would pay to see him in New York. But, Red Bulls and Bruce Arena seems eager to Tin Delgado ( he's a loser ).

Also, Henry won't go; if he's only star for the team, if Viera ( for example ) would sign, i bet Henry would join Viera. One major Super Star doesn't want to be only Super Star in the team. They want to know there's quality and depth on team. Not just their teams, but the other teams as well.

I agree. Riquelme is would be perfect. With Riquelme, you would see young american and local like Altidore and Johnny X become super stars. maybe sell them for a huge transfer. Riquelme might be popular with type american soccer fan, but for minories like europeans, south americans and meso-americans Riquelme is a bigger star than Rivaldo and Denilson put together.

I thought Guevarra had a great first year w/Metros. Then good, then last year's yo-yo, in which he came on at the end. How is that 'never fit in'? The talent around him wasn't totally there some of that time..I grant you he needed to do better, but 'never fit in' sounds too strong

Oh, shit, here we go again. :(

Line up now, get your posts ready: It's time to vent your frustration and anger that this next rumor doesn't come through.

Damn, people get so worked up over this crap, they really buy into it, that it's no surprise that they go balistic when the truth comes out (Agoos stating that we aren't talking to anyone with the intials TH.)

Get a grip, folks. Barcelona, Real Madrid, these are the possibles for the next stop for Henry if the Gooners should sell.

There are tons of people around the US and perhaps Canada that are now watching and waiting for the Red Bull supersigning.

At this juncture I do not think it is enough for Red Bull to just field a good team. Which is what may happen if Reyna sees the field more than Tab Ramos. However, if Red Bull holds onto the slot and gets a big name to go with their stadium opening that would be okay, but I hope Beckham is not the only name brought in by the new rule.

The one thing I wonder is if Arena could have talked Reyna into coming over for something less than a DP slot pay. Its doubtful he would have come this year, but could you imagine a Red Bull team if they would have signed say Reyna, Davids, and Riquelme for instance. A 3-5-2 with that central midfield would be amazing even if it caused the team to go young for most of their supporting cast.

Yeah it is tough waiting to see what is going to happen with the DP. Where are all these YI signings that were supposed to happen anyways?

It does seem like we really do take our time filling out the roster doesn't it? I guess as long as we get it right though I would have thought we would have filled those YI and SI slots relatively quickly due to the number of coaches we have on th eroster that know and can scout talent ie Williams, BA, Harkes, Agoos, etc.

If Henry does accept coming over here then it's a great signing. If he is coming over thru the Summer Transfer window, then by all means it's worth the wait.

So far him being 30 and long in the tooth is good enough for me, since he can still put the ball in the net. You haven't seen his last several matches on FSC. He has defeated Man U & Middlesboro in late dramatic fashion.

Maybe Youri gave him a call and told him that it's a fun place to play and that our new stadium will be ready by next July. This would be fantastic and I hope it's true.

Bruce and the boys know what they are doing and they know who to get.

    Agree 100%.

RBNY is not going to sign any "star". Don't waste your time talking about Henry/Ronaldo/Ronaldinho/Rivaldo etc etc because it just is not going to happen. If RBNY does use the second DP (which I actually dont think they will), it will be on some no-name player from South America.

If it is true what Agoos says ('no more cap room, and MLS won't let us do this or that') then Agoos/Arena are CULPABLE in that there is no way they should be in this situation in the first place. How could they mismanage the number (to such an extent) that they can't get a 2nd DP?

If this is just a lame excuse (and the reality is that they don't intend/never did to fill team with another superstar, 2nd DP) than the need just to fess up, and take the hard questions for their decision and strategy.

It appears that they want to slide by (blame other things), and not get anything but softball questions about their decision/strategy. Personally, I think that's a lack of leadership.

If your 'strategy' is so brilliant- you should have the guts to put it out there up front, and take the blows as they come. When you are proven right, then you will look impressive and be able to 'I told you so'. If the logic is so darn impressive, lead with it- and get everyone on your side up front! Easy!

But Agoos/Arena don't even want to be held culpable, apparently.

This is such an interesting group of comments. Less than a year ago, these boards were buzzing with negativity regarding the "big splash" that was RBNY home opener. There were so many remarks about how the only way to get fans in the seats and keep them there was to have a winning team.

Now the comments are once again about making a big splash. Yes, I know, it's a big splash with a player. That might work, or it might not. Even big-name players get injured -- and where would that leave the crowds and the team?

Over the years, I have had no problem getting lots of friends to go to the games with me when the team was playing well and winning games. And I couldn't even give a ticket away when they weren't.

Sure I would like to see Thierry Henry fronting my team; that would be so exciting. But even more, I would like to watch my team winning games -- lots of them.

Look slike the bar has been dropped and we are done:

    http://www.metrofanatic.com/story.jsp?ID=4179

I would ask MLS why is Becks allowed in for a sum of 250 mil and other teams are not allowed to do anything even not substantially near that absurd figure. Seems like a legitimate question any club should be asking our MLS leaders, that is for sure. As far as I could see there would be no market to even trade the DP slot to another team for as they will be in the same boat except maybe LA. Looks like Amado was just sent away for no reason. I am not too happy about this latest continuation of MLS salary Cap limits on Red Bull/MetroStars.

Galaxy/MLS does not pay him 250 mil and he does not earn 250 mil.
