I don't know much about comics or graphic novels (a little through my brother who was a collector), but I'm using Persepolis this semestr in a class I'm teaching. It's pretty excellent.
That is an excellent GN. What class are you teaching? There are plenty of other amazing GNs out there besides the well known ones such as Maus. Persepolis being one of them.
If you're a fan of Carey's writing but you actually like good artwork also you need to check out two Marvel books he just started writing. Ultimate Fantastic Four with art by Pasqual Ferry looks like it could be really amazing. And X-Men (adjectiveless) with art by Chris Bachalo and a run coming up by Humberto Ramos. Both books have much better characters for Carey to work with than Wetworks and both have artists who are miles better than Portacio.
Both are in my pull box A lot of people don't like Bachalo's work, but I always have. I'm pretty pumped to see Ramos take a stab at X-Men as well.
I've been a fan of Bachalo since Death: The High Cost of Living with Neil Gaiman. I thought his work on Steampunk was brilliant. It really showed that you absolutely can tell a story just with the art and that to take in every single image can really deepen your reaction to the story.
bump.. Yeah, that's when I got into Bachalo's art as well. I have all the issues of Steampunk, but after a while the story got convuluted for me so I stopped reading and just looked at his art. So is anyone here reading the Civil War story from Marvel? I'm into it and have taken sides with Captain America and the anti-registration heroes.
I have been following it as well. I don't think there is a single person who is following it who hasn't taken Cap's side. Quesada and Millar said they were going to make it so it would be hard to choose between the two sides but that has not been the case at all. Unless you are a fascist. Also they said just by following the Civil War mini-series is enough and you don't need to read what is happening in the other Marvel series' tie-ins unless you just wanted a bit extra. That is a load of crap. There is so much more happening with huge implications in their other series that take place during Civil War.
From what I've read of Civil War, it's as one sided as anything out there. I'm not sure how anyone can be on Iron Man's side -- including Mr Fantastic and Spidey. The explanations I've read are not convincing -- but I have not been reading the FF or Spiderman comics so maybe they are in character. I'm also not sure how they can end it without killing off either Cap or Iron Man -- for these guys to go from being teammates and allies to deadly enemies in a very short period of time, it's not going to be very satisfying if they just shake hands at the end and are friends again.
In the interest of shameless self-promotion, I will note that my first comic is out from Marvel: http://marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=5293 Also, I wrote a novel about Batman that came out on Halloween. It's called Inferno.
I checked that out and enjoyed it so I'll be reading the rest of the series. Any more comic writing plans in your future?
Hmmmm. Let me see if I can remember the ones I've read in the past 6 months or so ... (Most of these are from Vertigo comics, as they routinely hook us up at the paper with copies) -- Sandman, I think all of them --Maus, I & II -- DMZ (Like maybe the first couple issues. I think it was a compilation) --Can't Get No -- Life During Wartime -- Loveless -- The Exterminators -- Testament -- Fables ... Don't ask me which one, but each story is done by a different artist which I completely love. Also, I just found this on the DC Comics site when I was looking for the name of 'Loveless'. Anyway ... I think I'm the only person here in the building who enjoys graphic novels besides the Lifestyles Editor, who shares his PR goodies with me when he gets them.
Glad you liked it. There are plenty of plans, but we'll see which of them happens first. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing more stuff with Marvel.
Apparently the Punisher owns his own comic store: http://www.wqad.com/Global/story.asp?S=5633801&nav=1sW7
Son of Satan #2 is out; hie thee to the comic shop! Also (and this is uncomfortably revealing of the true depth of my inner nerdness), I found a treasure trove of old Rom:Spaceknight issues in the cheapo bin at the comic store in Bangor. Happiness, thy name is bargain bins.
Could people in this thread please check my post re: graphic novels in the "Education" forum? Thank you.
What's the matter ? Too lazy to put up a link ? https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=444580 You're welcome
Vol. 8 of Y the Last Man just came out about a week ago. The series is ending soon. Vol. 10 of 100 Bullets comes out December 27.
I just bought Kimono Dragons and can't wait to read it. I'm so bummed this is coming to an end. I'm hoping Fables can be more than a good replacement for it after I'm done.
I bought a bunch of Alpha Flight comics and started to read them. I'm on # 46 now. I got almost all of them up to #112. Good stuff.
I rarely get single issues nowadays but after I finish Kimono Dragons, I might just have to buy the rest of the back issues instead of waiting for the next tpb. Another series I recently got into is The Runaways which is also penned by Brian K. Vaughn. It's very pop-ish for the lack of a better word, has a very simple concept - a group of teenagers discover that their parents are super villains. It's incredible how much better the series got issue after issue. The characters are so fleshed out and rarely have I cared so much about a a super hero group.
I rarely buy single issues either. But after reading #51 I really had to know what was going to happen. I've never heard of that series. I'll have to check it out. Vaughn usually has alot of pop culture references in his work. Did you catch the Preacher reference in one of the earlier "Y" issues? I just finished reading volume 10 of 100 Bullets a few hours ago and it's great. One of the best things about it is the introduction by Darwyn Cooke. He ponders the idea, "Who's more important in the creation of a comic book, the writer or the artist?" He uses an analogy with film.
Oh yea, this one has a lot of them, makes his characters that much more enjoyable and the dialogue so fluent and fun to read. I downloaded the first two Runaways volumes and read them using this software called "CDisplay". If you want I can send it over to you so you don't have to spend money. Nope and I feel like an idiot because Preacher was one of those series I was and will always be so fond of. Which one was it if you can remember? I actually recently started reading the series. I put it on hold for a while because I was so busy but from what I did read it's really unique and the art itself is fantastic and just perfect for the stories.
Yeah I have a similar software. I've catched up on the Fables issues by downloading some of them. In a pretty early issue 355 asks Yorick if he has some matches or something to light a cigarette with and Yorick gives her a lighter that says "FUCK COMMUNISM". When 355 asks him about it he says that it's something he had seen in a comic book. They have a funny talk about it. I also caught a reference to Transmetropolitan in 100 Bullets.
